what year was this? And if you don't know, can you just estimate her age at the time? I'm gonna take a guess and say she wasn't younger than 30 when thi was filmed.
its funny, I'm surprised they even wanted to cast her as Millie, I could totally see Kristen as Miss Dorothy, I think that would be a really good fit for her. But yeah I agree with everything thats been said. She does this song well, it just doesn't fit as well into her voice as it did for Sutton. Although 14G which was supposed to be in Millie was better for Kristen, and thats why it didn't end up in the final show.
She doesn't hold a candle to Sutton Foster. Anyone who saw Sutton's performance on the Tony's knows that Sutton's version is far superior to Kristin's relatively lame attempt. Just compare each opening "No canary in a cage for ME" That note (me) says it all when Sutton's belt is compared to Kristin's throw away.
Do you know the difference between a workshop performance versus the finished product? If you do then you realize there is a BIG difference in performances.
Yes, I do know the difference. However, whenever performers of the calibre of Foster and Chenoweth perform in a professional situation, they might not always give 100% (especially when the project is still in discovery/workshop). However, anyone who has worked with singers, is regularly exposed to Broadway musical theater and knows the greater body of work of each of these artists can tell by this performance that Kristin cannot touch Sutton on this song.
Horrible acoustics in this recording but I see we won't agree on this. Sutton is an amazing performer no doubt but Kristen is an a talent class all her own. Her career prove that. So, let's just agree to disagree.
I think we both agree on Kristin's general talent. We only disagree about this song.
Kristin's strenghts are not well showcased in this song (it's not just about the acoustics or performance--it's the song itself). The song just doesn't highlight K's strenghts the way it highlights Sutton's.
Now, if we're talking about Candide (Glitter and be Gay),then I doubt Sutton would be able to outshine Kristin. But here, with "Millie," Sutton is the better equipped perfomer.
That is because Sutton is a through-and-through belter, while Kristin is a coloratura soprano. Yes, Kristin can belt, but that is Sutton's strength and not Kristin's. It is therefore unfair to compare the two performances. Plus Sutton's performance was the finished product in the final version of the show, while Kristin's was a workshop performance. Therefore you cannot expect the same caliber of performance as you would in a fully staged Broadway show.
could u tell em what a coloratura soprano is it a soprano who can belt really high? dont calll me stupid please i just wanna know cause i ask ppl ? on youtube and there and there like you idiot. lol
Explaining things is not my forte but....a coloratura soprano is a soprano who has amazing vocal acrobatics. They can easily sing melismas (sp?), trills, and (most likely) go up to an F6. Don't take my word for it lol!
actually there really isn't a such thing as a "coloratura soprano" coloratura is used to describe melismatic passages and trills and such. any voice can do it. there can be a tenor or an alto that has coloratura ability. generally the lyric voices have this tendency. we had a big lesson about this in my first semester of music history class lol
I would disagree, partially. Not every voice can do coloratura- not well, at least. Otherwise yes, there are more than just coloratura sopranos. It is partially an acquired skill, though a really hard one to grasp without some natural ability.
@Lexigiggles No, not any voice can do coloratura. Coloratura refers to the very highest end of the soprano range. It's a term usually used in opera, but is occasionally applied to Broadway sopranos like Kristin who can reach those notes.
I think you may be mistaken. I believe coloratura refers to the trills and runs that are added to vocal pieces to further "decorate" them. Lexigiggles is semi-correct, in that coloratura can be performed in most/all vocal ranges. But it is generally used for sopranos, esp. in opera, as you said.
Similarly, it would be unfair to compare Sutton's legit singing voice to Kristin's, because her non-belt cannot hold a candle to Kristin's clearly superior legit voice.
Please don't judge me, but I loved Sutton foster as millie, and I don't picture Kristin as a Millie. I think that the musicals she has done fits her perfectly. Sutton was made for Millie and Kristin was made for Wicked
Susan took over the role of Millie after Sutton. Sutton won the tony for best leading actress in a Musical for her performance as Millie. Sutton orginated the role on Broadway. Trust me I am a huge fan of both Sutton and Susan!
Kristin was the original Millie in the workshops, and after she left the show they chose someone else to play Millie in the workshops. Before they began to perform the show they asked Sutton Foster (Who was only in the chorus of the show at the time) to play Millie. After Sutton left the show Susan Egan took over.
No. Kristin went to some NBC show that ended up being cancelled, and then she went into workshops for Wicked. Erin Dilly took on the role when Kristin left, but she ended up getting sick and didn't come back. Sutton Foster then took on the role full-time after having been the understudy. Sutton won a Tony for the role.
I prefer Cheno singing in the higher ranges, but this works out fine and is actually a lot better than other versions of this song I've heard. Yet nothing tops Sutton Foster as Millie<3
what the crap? higher range? are you kidding me? have you ever tried to sing this thing?
i mean, it sounds like she either dropped an octave, or she's just so amazing she makes it sound that way. but i'm an alto and can't hit half of the high notes without going into a head voice.
then again, kristin's high range to me is like a miracle.
i love kristin, she has an amazing voice! incase anyone likes to know alittle about me, i'm going to Dr. smiths on 24th. i plan to go to collage for acting & singing.
kristin has such an amazing voice! i love her! she has... okay, she is just brilaint! she is my idol! hope to act with her after graduating, wish me luck. -sulie
Kristin was in the workshop before the musical was actually released. She was the first person to be considered as the leading charachter, but in the end, she couldn't do the role, so it was given to someone else. Sutton was that person's understudy, not Kristin's.
"When the stage version of the 1967 movie musical went into rehearsals for its pre-Broadway tryout at the La Jolla Playhouse in California a year and a half ago, Ms. Foster was in the ensemble. She had a tiny part and was the understudy for Erin Dilly, who had been cast as Millie when Kristin Chenoweth, the director Michael Mayer's original choice, got a television series.
After the first run-through, it became clear, Mr. Mayer said, that Ms. Dilly was not ideally suited for the role, and the producers asked Ms. Foster to take over. She played Millie for the entire California
engagement, which received notices encouraging enough for the producers to bring the show to Broadway.
everyone knows, at least in the broadway community knows that Sutton got the role when "millie" went to another show....not many people know that Sutton got it bc Kristin Chenoweth went to wicked...I could not imagine he playing millie after sutton's amazing performance!
You do realize that she was in her early 30's when Millie was being workshopped, right? The show came to Broadway in 2002 so she would not have been too old then.
I had no idea that Kristin was gonna be Millie!! What a surprise: but I'm glad in the end that Kristin ended up being Glinda and Sutton ended up being Millie.
She actually didn't do millie cause she got a show on nbc called kristen that she starred in- it only had a couple of episodes though. While she was filming that and after it was cancelled that was when she was offered Glinda.
she was going to do Inga then she was supposed to do the Madeleine Kahn part. She said it on the Megan Mullally Show, but Megan did it since Kristin did Pushing Daisies.
It's from the musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie. This is the workshop recording of it. Sutton Foster starred in this on Broadway. Kristin decided to do Wicked instead of this.
I adore Kristin <33

I'm a lyric and my range is soprano, thus I'm a "lyric soprano".
