i think the box head and card board hand was more of a symbolic kinda thing. a man that has som issues or a problem that kept him apart from his girlfriend. and the casstte maybe symbolises the actuall problem it's selve.

So when he puts his hand away from her he grabs that music cassette. and later puts headphones on (this represents the world speaking to him about who he should be). But subconsciously he keeps looking for her everywhere... So he destroys that cassette player and tears down the headphones. :) Be who you really are!
