EADGB high to low. I have found that the Maple/Cedar gives me the loudest volume with still a good sound. If I went to the Spruce, there I would sacrifice some bass... and it takes a few years for spruce to break-in. It is a combination of all elements.. which results in the volume and timbre. Bill Petersen obviously has the "formula" correct. You cannot touch the quality of his hand-made instruments for less than triple the cost. I play mostly eastern European folk & balkan music. Very rich sounding instrument. Is it tuned DGDAD? I have a Petersen level III bouzouki in spruce and rosewood - it's used mostly for Irish music. The spruce top gives it bright mid and treble note sounds, and the back adds a warm bass.
Do you really think that cedar and maple would be the loudest combination of woods? I would have thought that top wood would effect tone more than it would volume, and that volume is more a product of the wood thickness and bracing style. Very nice instrument.
Sounds great. What is the scale length? I have a Petersen Level IV OM spruce/walnut and play it every day.
