@Sanbudweiser, who ever invaded Arabia Saudi or Iran? Exactly no one. Then why are they wishing death to Israel and the west. Please go ahead about the crusades which happened a thousand years ago. Not to mention why did the crusades happen? In case u didn't know the Muslims went there and conquered Jewish and christian lands. If Islam is so innocent then why have 99% of the last 10000 acts of terror been committed by Muslims or middle eastern decent ppl? Let's talk about Muslim turkey i
If it's fair to point out the violence and fundamentalism endemic in Islam, is it not also fair to perhaps point out that a lot of it is a result of violent European/Western/Christian imperialism during the 20th Century (and don't get me started on the Crusades). Can you blame a region for being poorly developed when 90% of its history involves invasion by bloodthirsty foreigners, be they Greek, British, French, Mongol, etc.? One should recognize context and the colonial history of Algeria.
"I’ve lived enough to know that I am complicit in the evil that, alas, prevails over the world and the evil that will smite me blindly. I could never desire such a death. I could never feel gladdened that these people I love be accused randomly of my murder. I know the contempt felt for the people here, indiscriminately. And I know how Islam is distorted by a certain Islamism. This country, and Islam, for me are something different. They’re a body and a soul."
they didn't show that the Algerians suffered from terrorism, i remember this period and we lived in terror every day, waiting for death ................ I HATE TERRORISM
anyone who dosent like this movie , just doesnt get it....its not about a religion , its about faith......and no one would volunteer to die for a faith they didnt believe in .....their faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ and its their love of Him that compelled them to stay .....non believers would run away ...those unsure of their faith would have run away ..but these precious monks who lived their faith in prayer and works......now enjoy their reward ..in the presence of the Lord
Any religion. Sure, many religious people are "moderate" but, when it comes to condoning massacre that would otherwise be condemned, the reasons are religious almost all of the time. Take the Battle of Jericho, for instance, in Christianity.
It's like the old saying goes: With or without religion, you will have good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things. But for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.
@Kinin4 true enough. But some would say that for bad people to do good things, it takes religion as well. Religion is more like play, music and community organizing - culture itself. It can't effectively be distinguished from the work that human beings do.
And then there are bad people who do bad things and then blame religion; or they justify it by saying they want to rid the world of religion itself.
@Kinin4 I think you are conflating religion = delusion. The evidence is that people have all sorts of delusions, whether religious or not. You would also have to make the argument that the church has never ever done a single good thing. This would be a fairly extreme, unsubstantiated claim. Further more, "good" people do all sorts of bad things in other kinds of institutions. I suggest you think harder about what religion is.
People have done both good and bad things in the name of delusions. The real question is whether there is a logical pathway from delusions to atrocities, and if history is consistent with that pathway.
@Kinin4 There may be a logical pathway from delusions to atrocities, it not the only pathway. Not all atrocities have been caused by delusions. Was Genghis Khan deluded? Or simply executing his enemies? He surely didn't need religion. People can be monsters even without the supernatural. Mao, Stalin, Ayn Rand, for example. "Religion" (whatever that is) has no monopoly on violence.
I consider all atrocities to have been done in the name of delusions; whether they be delusions of grandeur, delusions of oppression, religious delusion, or whatnot.
I simply consider religion to be one kind of delusion; and there certainly is a logical pathway (both dialectically and historically) from it to atrocities. That is my only point.
For me, those atheists who blame every social problem on religion (especially Catholicism in America) are irresponsible and ignorant because they simply ignore other factors that cause the social problems, vice, and corruption and blaming religion is the easiest way.
@Ozzi386 F**k religion? That's a bit like saying "f**k political ideologies." Which religion are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned, there are different religions which have absolutely nothing in common. For example, Christianity does not condone Jihad and does not teach heart-sacrifices like the Aztecs do. Do you know the difference between generals and specifics? Hmm?
The priests were not murdered by any religion, they were murdered by religious extremists. Every religion has it's fanatics, and in case you didn't know even Christianity has it's hateful and violent wackos . . . . When Christian extremists murder people does that mean that "Christianity" murders them? Of course not. Grow up.
they were murdered by that shit religion spare me your pathetic atempt to be in the moral highground
when the fuck do christians extremist murder people? is there even such a thing as a christian extremist? i think the only 1 who needs to grow up is you but to make you seem less ridiculous i will say that for every 1000 islamic extremist murderers there "might" be one christian crazy murdering fuck. your fucking funny kid
@dangflo Yes. Anders. Who didn't actually bring up the fact of being a Christian. Where did Christ ever teach us to massacre a bunch of campers? Hmm? And don't cite the Old Testament. That would only show one's ignorance of the canon of scriptures.
[-Where did Christ ever teach us to massacre a bunch of campers? Hmm? And don't cite the Old Testament. That would only show one's ignorance of the canon of scriptures.-]
But to ignore the fact that god condoned the massacre of women and children in said Old Testament is to show a salad-bar-type approach to the Bible. Even if Jesus supposedly "negates" the Old Testament, then we have the issue of "Why have it in the first place? It is filled with ATROCIOUS morals."
you see its all in what the religion teaches and what the culture teaches do me a favor read the coran learn history and open your eyes to the events of the past 20 years litle man.
what a wonderful film . it is about the true meaning of The Incarnation of Jesus . it is the pure essence of God's presence in our humanity and how we respond. it is about forgiuveness and recionciliation . it contrasts the stages of the Mass with what is happening ion the monk's lives and in the muslim community which they are serving. iit is about true faith, humanity and love. a swonderful film for our troubled times .
I watched that film, but I am wondering about the setting. Why were there rarely young males in that Algerian village? Do young Algerians move to the towns and France for works and does that reflect what happens to Algeria 20 years ago?

@newtochrist, I found it very moving and considering that it was based in areal life even more haunting. The fact that they faced the unknown with thier faith as their only shield against the violence & madness of the rest of the world is stagering. THir message of finding hope & peace between seamingly impossible sides to reconcile is very difficult. The last words they give at the final scene are very moving and the film is very well done.
Just watched this film today. It was absolutely incredible. I don't know how it can possibly be NOT nominated for an Oscar. Such an emotional and powerful film.

Delusions do that to people. :/
Admirable as that result is, it is few and far between.
No "bad" person has ever changed the world for the better because of religion.
There are, however, "good" people who have committed atrocities in the name of religion.
There's just a logical pathway.
