  • The train sure makes a racket when crossing the joint in the rail between the swing bridge and the solid portion.

  • The center part of the bridge looks mighty flimsy !!

  • @soshmed1 The swing bridge is basically two separate truss spans that meet at the pivot and are held together by the lighter framework in the middle.

  • That's a lot of weight on the center pivot!

  • Thanks for sharing this. Very interesting. I'm going to attach a video of one I just found in Georgia.

  • big gears/pulleys in it to make the bridge turn like that,in my opinion,i think it's so cool..this is 5star video,God Bless

  • wow just like the old Dumbarton rail bridge.

  • didnt that bridge used to be owned by the MILW

  • Yes, that bridge has a long history, replaced a winter ice bridge/summer ferry service, for the La Crosse Railroad/Milwaukee Road/Soo Line and now Canadian Pacific Railway. It has been rebuilt a number of times.

  • One summer day, the bridgetender invited me out on this bridge to take a look around. It is very interesting. This bridge was completed in 1876 and will be soon be replaced by a raising bridge similar to the ones they have in Duluth.

  • The road looks much improved since I was there last. We used to fish from that first piling. the bridge tenders name was Merle.

  • wis465 has a YouTube video from Empire Builder crossing this bridge!

  • Awesome catch! You posted this only 2 days before I saw a swing bridge in action in Green Bay.

  • Now that is cool

  • Nice! I've been on that bridge before and have been around it...but have never actually seen it in action. Thanks for posting!

  • Thanks, was great to see it in action!

  • what road can you go on to see this bridge

  • Shore Acres Rd, La Crescent, MN 55947, USA, cut and paste that into google

  • now they have a bridge that swings up and down instead of using this now.

  • I think you are mistaken!!

  • Cool! I have seen a few swing bridges before, never seen one operate.

  • We had a bridge like that in Duluth, MN but then a ship crashed into it and it got destroyed.

  • Very cool! Not to many operable old swing bridges around anymore.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

  • Thanks!
