However as @halistra24 says, instead of using a credit car, you can by a top up card in any newspaper stand, and top up your minutes that way. BTW. a few years ago we bought an unlocked Quad Band phone in the US on ebay to use anywhere in Europe, and bought a SIM card in the US for England for $30.

Public transport is very common in London. Everybody uses buses and underground on a daily basis, it is completely different to America's interpretation of public transport. In London hardly anyone drives between 7am to 7pm due to congestion charge. Plus London is a very small city and pretty safe for first time travellers.
