It's interesting how New Years Eve seems to be a reccuring thread in Waits' ouvre; A Sight For Sore Eyes in the late-70s, Big Time in 1988 and, of course, New Years Eve in 2011.
Last time I did speed, I watched the whole show....it was a year ago. Today I'm on speed again and I'll watch the 10 vids. Artificial paradise!! What would I do without you.
Did you know that they used to have a celebration somewhere in Upstate NY called "WaitStock?" It lasted over a weekend close to Yasgar's Farm--I'm guessing. Tom wasn't there personaIly, but it involved a variety of his music celebrated by many people in different ways. I could never get there but I live it in my mind every time I hear Tom's tunes. Keep your eyes open on the net in case they ever have another one.
@surferboy5252 Well I guess it really wasn't working between them but things actually worked out for the better well for Tom anyway not so sure about Ricky. And to my knowledge I think they are still friends to this day.
But Kira, you arent missing out because you have discovered Tom Waits. The people that are missing out are the mindless idiots who accept everything they hear on top 40 radio and consider it brilliant simply because its "hot".
I was born in 86 myself so i know what you mean by missing his earlier live shows, but im sure he'll tour again within the next 2 or 3 years and you can catch Waits then.
I was 2 when this came out. I started listening to Tom Waits when I was 19 I wish I heard of Tom Waits when I was 16. I can't stop listening it's amazing stuff.
@KiraPlaysGuitar I know the feeling. the 90's was the wrong era to be born in. Now we're stuck with crap artists and commercial stuff. There will never be any music that was as amazing as the stuff which came out of the 60's to early 90's.
You can get the 'big time' movie on VHS. I been looking for it on DVD for quite a while. I've got the VHS tape, but I need to have to made to dvd. Hey, that was the format it was originally available in.
Jarmusch is indeed awesome. Whats your fav flick of his? I love Stranger than paradise, down by law, Night on earth, Ghost Dog, Coffee and cigarettes, and Mystery Train and Dead Man all equally
I saw him in Houston and what a show. Lucinda was darker than the ace of spades and I felt it in all of my bones. What a man, thank you for so many years, Tom.

I love how "Another fool on the vine" is played at the beginning. It's one of my favorites(though due to Waits, it's hard to choose a favorite).

Well Kira,
If you play guitar, like Tom Waits, and live in os Angeles,
I got a band that is half acoustic, half electric that needs a electric guitar player. Here is the web site which has a music
video. Click on CONTACT, and you can reach me there.

why didn't jarmusch direct this?
bakanbi 3 years ago
I'm not sure if he would've been a good choice, he's not into theatre that much, I think Blum did an excellent job.
