I've just been experimenting with this tune on a low D. 1st time I've had a low whistle out of the bag for years! - Love your version! don't know what it is, but you make the dar dum dar dee dum bits sound a lot less repetative than the way I'm doing it!! - anyway - thanks again for the inspiration, I'll work on mine some more !!

  • anyone know the guitar tab?

  • Absolutely stunning. Such beautiful playing on the low D and the guitar. Brought tears to my eyes and found you after listening to lots of Planxsty :). Have always loved playing this on the fiddle but the sensitivity of your playing and the ornamentation is something I shall leave to the experts! I shall watch and listen to this over and over again. Many thanks, Eimear Bradley.

  • This is so freakin beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(: For school I am supposed to sing an Irish song called, Oh Danny Boy...and when I looked the lyrics up on google...I found a whole bunch of other Irish songs and YOU GUYS were obviously one of them, haha(:

  • I got married in 2005 and my wife walked down the aisle to a similar slow arrangement of this tune. It brings back special memories listening to this and for what it's worth, this is the best version of this tune on Youtube – great stuff lads!

  • I salute you two guys

  • You guys are awesome! Does anyone know if the lyrics exist in Gaelic?

  • Those lyrics are modern, by Brian Warfield of the Wolfe Tones. The original song had none, and frankly, didn't need any.

  • That's good to know. I reciently wrote a song that features this melody as the bridge.

  • well its wrote in irish (not gaielic) its an irish song thats translated to english so im gonna take a wild stab and say yes, any way you wont understand it in irish!!

  • Our "Irish" language...i.e when we speak IS called gaelic, (or gaelige as it was on my school books) I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "it's wrote in Irish (not gaelic)". When we learnt this for choir, only "Tabhair dom do lamh" was in gaelic, the rest was in English.

  • first off i wasnt talking to you,

second your exactly right ,the irish for "irish" is "gaelige" and the english is for "gaelige"it is "irish",so its not gaelic, so whats your point??? and the english lyrics are by the wolfe tones, so theres a choir in norway somewere doing wolfe tone covers???lol

  • You do realise that "Gaelic" pertains to the group of gael languages...actually scratch that, I was going to try get into an intellectual discussion and do it in a civil manner, but your pre-pubescent response to a fairly innocent comment tells me all I need to know about your temperament, talk about defensive much! You commented & as this is a public forum I have as much right to comment on what you say as everyone else-if you don't wish to be replied to, don't bother posting in the first place

  • Oh and I'm from Northern Ireland genius, not Norway if you bothered to look at the "Hometown" section of my profile, I moved to Norway last year, so yes, there is a choir doing Wolfe Tone songs it's called 'An Cor Gaelach' in St.Joseph's Convent Grammar School :) just so you know!

  • Wow, you really proved your intelligence, I mean "vagina" really!? What age are you?! Haha, I actually didn't realise some people were still so pathetic but I guess I've met one. You STILL don't get the point, but then again, I never really expected you to, *pat pat* it's ok pet, go back to sleep! :) ("of" does not = off, just so you know!)

  • Just give me your hand, In a gesture of peace. Just give me your hand And all troubles will cease, For the strong and the weak, For the rich and the poor? All peoples and creeds, Let's meet their needs. With a passion, we can fashion, A new world of love! Chorus
  • Just give me your hand,

    Is tabhair dom do lámh.

    Just give me your hand,

For the world it is ours.

All the sea and the land,

    to destroy or command.

If you give me your hand.

  • Chorus: By day and night,

    through all struggle and strife,

And beside you, to guide you,

    Forever, my love.

    For love's not for one,

But for both of us to share.

For our country so fair, For our world and what's there.

  • Just give me your hand,

    And come along with me.

Will you give me your hand,

And the world it can see,

    That we can be free,

    In peace and harmony?

From the north to the south.

From the east to the west.

    Every mountain, every valley,

    every bush and birds nest!

  • Just give me your hand,

    is tabhair dom do lámh.

    Just give me your hand

    And I'll walk with you,

Through the streets of our land,

    Through the mountains so grand.

If you give me your hand.

  • I love this so much. I listen to it constantly. Amazing job!

  • beautiful!

  • @Sindini Great Choice. I was thinking how cool would it be to hear this song for a proposal.

  • Can I get this on an mp3? ITS SO AWESOME!

  • Glorious, wonderful music! It makes me think, that if humankind can produce something so beautiful, there must be an angelic side to humans, although we have so much war, crime, and sin. The vibes in this music are so high that the music probably attracts angels to listen.

  • Just had to comment again...I really like that you play this in a nice, leisurely way. I was listening to a bunch of different versions on iTunes, and everyone seems to feel the need to rush it! This is so much sweeter (more like what one would walk down the aisle to!)

  • Very well done!

  • "by waving his fingers while playing"

  • Comment removed

  • It takes more than that. Some argue that vibrato is produced in the throat. Honestly, it's not something you can really "learn." I do the "finger waving" mostly for show when I play my whistle. Although I've been playing the flute for over 14 years.

  • You can do finger vibrato by tapping the hole 2 below the note you are playing. (eg. if you are playing F# on a D whistle (top 4 holes covered) then you tap the 6th hole to produce finger vibrato.)

  • Well done! I love it.

Side note - you can hear Planxty play this one on the pipes at the end of the song "Raggle Taggle Gypsy". It's also incredible.

  • Beautifully done!!!

  • Honestly I enjoyed your version more than the Chieftains version... keep recording - you guys are good together

  • Do you guys have this on cd. I'd love to use it at my wedding

  • It's great! The chieftains play it better. Never the less it's so good!

  • i have to disagree, i just don't like this song played fast and wild. This tempo and soft style is the best version I've heard. But each to their own :)

  • I agree, I like this version, slow and sweet.

I got a whistle recently. I'm working on this song, but I don't think I'll ever sound half as good!

  • Well done, lads.

  • Would love for your brother to write the guitar tab for this PJ, it's great, would love to play the backing myself so i can play along on my whistle :)

  • Wow. Sooooo beautiful.

  • i cant get enough from your music!

  • Hey guys, record a cd, you have a customer already, :D

  • Very nicely done, gentlemen. I also have a Dixon Low D. Hope I can do half as well as you when I learn this tune. Can't wait to get started.

  • I was in a thrift store yesterday and I heard this song on the cd they were playing. I thought of you guys, since this video is the first I've heard this song ever. Then I came back here to watch it again, since the cd in the thrift store did not live up to this recording. :)

  • nice guys, ( frizzell32 )

  • i really love this tune... i play it on my harp too.

  • cool, make a video, would love to hear it on harp :)

  • That's so lovely! ♥

  • This is a really nice version of this song lads, well done (from an Irishman).

  • thats a lovely piece!! i play the tradiotanal irish flute and im from ireland!!

  • good!

  • You guys are really good, you should vist Ireland

  • really nice, keep on playing

  • Very nice mates'

cool to see other young guys(even more than myself) into irish music like this.

    and especially a fellow flutist/whistler

  • Fantastic! I'll admit, I like this piece played at a faster pace and on the uilleann pipes, but this track was beautifully done.

  • a fuckin good playin again! keep on playin!

  • you guy's fuckin' rock!!

  • This is awesome.

I can only do a bit of accordeon and church organ, but wish I was really skilled on one instrument, like this guy is.

  • Thank you my friend.. The music of Ireland is so special.. It reflects a long (and often sad) history. I pray they have a glowing and happy future. Such a caring and cultured people deserve no less.

  • I guess the music of nearly every country does, but the Irish are, rightly so, proud of their musical tradition and, unless the Dutch, at least make an effort to preserve it and pass it on to further generations.

If you only knew what cultural treasures and beautiful old songs are carelessly wiped out from the collective memory in my country it would make you just as sad as I am. Only the Churches overhere make an effort to maintain some of it. Shame !

  • Well, people over here in the US don't like traditional music either; the general (but stupid) population would prefer Brittney Spears, and sitting around and watching TV all day, than to listen to this beautiful, wholesome music.

  • Yeah, that's how things go.

Wonder how many people in the US still know beautiful songs like ''Poor Wayfaring Stranger'' or "Hard Times Come Again no More."

    I'm Dutch, but I do.

  • Like the Irish, the Dutch have a great culture. We do in England, but sadly it is often forgotten. When I hear some of this awful rap (sorry, I cannot call it music), I could cringe.. Enough said.

  • Thanks for a very positive comment, Reepicheep77. I couldn't agree more! No matter how much bad taste taste there is about (and there is ample) beautiful traditional music will live on long after the other stuff is forgotten. Peace to you, my friend.

    Tony..

  • Tony, thank you for sending this and your lovely comments regarding the old "Sod". When I get more time I will review the other videos you have sent me.

Hope all is well with you.

    Pat in Carlow.

  • Thanks Pat.. Ireland is so special to me.. It is always ther when I need somewhere to escape and chill out. Its people are always warm and welcoming. Long may it live in peace and prosperity!

Look out for a new Cliff video, later tonight!

    Tony :-)

  • what talent thank you ,,,

  • Thank you too.. Ireland is full of hidden treasures. the internet can (and does) bring these into the open for all to enjoy!

  • Absolutely wonderful - God bless Ireland.. You are so caring and chilled out! Incredible performance.. Well done!!!

    Tony :-)
