I have to say, I don't like this that much. Sure, Shatner speaks with energy...but that's all he does: speak. It's simply tuneless. And when a melody does come in at around halfway through the song, you get the impression that you're listening to Shatner singing along to the song playing on the radio. It's complete without him, and he just feels like an unnecessary extra. Still, this is the only version available with extended lyrics, so...
This is one of the greatest covers ever. Almost as a good as the original and the original is one of my favorite songs. Only thing I don't like is the choir at the end. Has Been is a great album too.
as the good doctor mark kermode says... "will, stick with making pop music, because after all, your version of common people is better than pulp's" and how right he was.
Folks, I really can't understand all this excitement about this version of "Common People", Pulp's one is much better and emotional and intense than this... even though I have to admit that Shatner's vocalisms are funny.
@hansdaltrey That's so interesting, I can feel a LOT more emotion from this version! The original made it easy for me to feel the satire, while Shatner's version is dripping with anger.
Love both versions though, just for different versions.
There was a video of a live performance of this version w/ joe Jackson and Ben Folds on keyboards. Where'd go.
Sorry all you Pulp fans but I really do prefer this version for the energy- the way Shat says "fail" and the anger in Joe's voice. Shat sings it like your Dad would if he was really dissapointed.
this is....genius! lol

Would be better without the other guy singing over Shatner's lyrics, you know the guy who is trying to sound like Jarvis Cocker.

In the parts where there's actual singing, is it actually Shatner?
if so, bend me over and take me up the trade entrance; I'm impressed!

@Grashnook
No, it's Joe Jackson and he totally makes the song. I wish he'd do it without Shatner's talking.

@wildjohn I loved that live version. I guess it was taken down because of copyright.
bartmuley 5 months ago
@wildjohn ... and Jarvis didn't put any energy into it? ;-)
(though I agree... el Shat did step it up half a gear - and the rest of the album is pretty intense)

It doesn't hurt to have Joe Jackson backing you up.

Wow. This guy is really really good. I think he will make a name for himself if he sticks to what he's good at. I hope to see more of this neophyte.

William Shatner IS a God! He's entertaining in anything he does. :)
I'm looking forward to seeing the new Star Trek movie this weekend. The new Captain Kirk actor has some BIG shoes to fill. :)
