I call this a 'shadow classic'. Everyone who knows it loves it, but few do.
Still, excellent example of the 80s-style faux-performance video. A synth-heavy track with no synths visible, one guitar when there are clearly two, and what are the horn players doing, anyway? XD
Sounds very much like Japan w a touch of Duran Duran from the early 80's, doncha think? Specially the bassline and the "string/horn" section... Well, I guess he needed to update his sound to get into the game and top-10 lists, and also to make it in the states... I have always loved him though I prefer his darker works...
@jstragne I was working in a record shop when this came out, and unfortunately it was not a successful album for him. Shame, I really liked it. If you believe everything you read on wiki (and I do, religously... :p) then he was quite in awe of Pino Palladino on bass, and mixed the bass up to the front - credit where it's due. And maybe Gary was a little ahead of his time... Pino's sound came much more to the fore a couple years later on Paul Young's No Parlez album.
Love this song. Should have ranked high on the charts here in the U.S.. DJs and their bosses just had narrow vision. Song's title should be "We take Mistery to bed"(album spells Mystery with an "I".
Whenever I meet anyone named Debbie, I always have to fight the complusion to sing the line like Numan at them, and confuse the ever living heck out of em. ^_^
i thought it was by the look of the buildings and of course studio 54 but he had blonde hair in that video so i wonder whether it was done after the original song itself?
thanks for the comment midnightsavannah it looked a bit simalier to new york although some of the buildings looked a bit different. numania los angeles!
No, its a reference to his an ex, called Debbie, who sold a story about him liking guns and stuff after she left him to the News of The World (uk newspaper) hence, "I called your number and you told the world..."
"You're my assassin but you can't see the crime" is still one one of my favourite Numan lines.
I think it's true, sometimes people don't realize how much they hurt you.
Interestingly, what with his black hat and blonde hair, Gary looks a little like Beck here (on whom he's been of considerable influence - just listen to Devil's Haircut, the melody is very Numan-ish).
one of many numan favorites. although this is one of the catcheist. looks to me like that video was shoot i new-york. well thats what i assume. numaina rule'th the world!
Best track on the album- always loved the heavy bass & meaty drums.

@jstragne The likes of Mick Karn et al worked with Numan on the both the 81 & 82 albums, so I guess the style reflects the musicians lol

I never liked anything he did around this period-he seemed to be stuck in same old funk groove, from Music for cham eleons onwards..
