The poppier bits are the best bits, mainly because they're not doing anything hugely interesting with their technical skills. It's a problem of the Prog-Metal genre in that every band just seems to lack any sort of originality and they all end up sounding like a DT or SX knockoff.
@medvesajtification Umm.... No? Sorry but some people like good vocals. Why don't you go listen to your Day to Remember. Like I have nothing against scremo (When its good ex. As I lay Dying/old All that Remains) but SW should never have screaming. Tommy has an amazing voice.
i just found out about this band a few weeks ago and man i cant get enough its like the first time i heard dream theater in 92 i was totally blown away! my favorite bands right now are sw and redemption fucking awesome!
micanut dont apologize. dagbli is a retard. they're from stockholm- the CAPITAL of SWEDEN. OR SVERIGE. unless every report and interview on these guys is getting false information. maybe youre thinking of circus maximus.
Seventh Wonder rules, not to mention that their bass player is one of the best there is. On Waiting in the Wings, you can really hear some amazing bass with songs like "Devil's Inc.", "Edge of My Blade" and "Walking Tall". Great stuff!
I love them both but Seventh Wonder are heavier, have a phenomenal vocalist and just seem to compose better. DT seem to be going down hill a bit in my opinion. 'A Rite of Passage' for example is very lacking and then it sounds like they've gone 'fuck it, this song isn't going anywhere, quick! John solo!' Rudess and Moore are both epic keyboardists though.
They are definitely worse than DT in their youth, but on the other hand they're definitely better than DT nowadays. Systematic Chaos and the preview of the next album couldn't convince me. In my opinion, they have lost their originality.
what exactly was more present and conscious? True, you might say it was Images and Words. Scenes from a Memory was magnificent. But in general, their stuff is filled with a ton of weird shredding and unmelodic solos. In contrast, I would say Mercy Falls is ENTIRELY conscious. It's their Scenes from a Memory.
True, DT came first, and they did define the genre. But that alone would not make them better musicians. I have learned that in this genre, there is no "better" or "best."
Sure, they're peppered all over in every album. It's the signature DT theme. For example, in the middle of Metropolis Pt 1, they break down the melody in favor of that weird jam stuff they do, right in the middle of the song. Maybe someone likes that, but I don't know anyone who does. I think it's much more musically challenging to write tight, integrated themes and melodies concisely, rather than sprawling jam sessions.
i don't know if you play any instrument or have any musical theory knowledge, but that section is definately not a jam, and was probably pretty challenging to write...i don't think it's weird (?) and I've never heard that anyone has said they didn't like it, 'cause it sounds great in my ears
i love what DT does in what you are mentioning. it's creative, it sets them apart, it's the definition of being progressive, and it's a nice change of pace. music doesn't have to be one size fits all. you can think outside the box. and i think it's quite natural and great
I agree with you on all points except one. I think Scenes is way, way overrated - it is just bad copy of Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime (compare the two - it's sickening). BAD copy because it is disguised as an original. Actually, after listening that album, I turned my back to DT for good. Those who always bring DT to every progsite are, I think, deeply uneducated in music history, but think that mention of DT gives them mark of credibility and that makes them feel worthy. Poor souls!
@micanut48 Yeah, you went down a road that I wasn't going to go down, but I think I agree: I'm not so sure that Scenes was that original either. I mean, it was GOOD and I LOVED it. But I loved Mindcrime more. However, I think I say that b/c it really defined the whole genre - I mean, Mindcrime was really just out-of-this-world amazing. So maybe it's possible we're programmed to compare everything to Mindcrime. Not sure.
@micanut48 Mindcrime was good, but honestly, were going to compare DT to Queensyrche? The two don't even have the same sounds. I honestly cant stand Queensyrche. They have such a..Idk, unlikable voice. And now since MP left DT, Im trying to find a new Prog Band to replace DT, lol
@BoyMeetsDrum What I meant was that Mindcrime still to this day is the album to match when it comes to intensity and the idea. In my opinion, it jumpstarted the prog movement. Instrumentaly, I do not compare the two. Obviously, there is a jump in skills but I will maintain that Mindcrime was the kickass album in times where everyone else was artistically lost. If it was not for Mindcrime, the prog would look different today if there was any. Other than that, I share your sentiments.
wholeheartedly agree. I will add creativity into the lexicon as well. My honest opinion is that La Brie is driving DT down - he just DOES not fit into the structure. How come that they come up with fantastic individual or semicollective efforts but together they really are not good anymore? Listening to SW is so refreshing - but than Swedes are always very good with strong melodies that grab your soul - and lyrics are very often heart wrenching
u dont need to compare, there good in their own way, i love 7th wonders singer cos he sounds different and they come up with some amazing instrumentals. dream theater are the music masters tho.
I don't think they're that similar to Dream Theater. I think it's true to say they've developed their own style and in my opinion they share a closer affinity with Circus Maximus. Mercy Falls by Dream Theater and Isolate by Circus Maximus are probably the best prog albums I own (and therefore in my opinion better than Images and Words by Dream Theater)

@medvesajtification You're a funny man. Brutality is not necessary in music. It just makes it awful.
WeedKrop 10 months ago
@WeedKrop I disagree. Brutality isn't awful, it just wouldn't fit with Seventh Wonder at all.

Not really. You can argue which you like better but there is not true "superior".
Plus their songs sound VASTLY different, so there isnt much to compare.
