@The3rdPlateau I would say it has more to do with altitude of detonation, soil and rock type of the area, etc etc. The detonation itself is just a flash after all, and there aren't that many different types of basic heat expansion. Everything that happens afterwards, ie the cloud, is basically just soil or water kicked up into the atmosphere in various permutations. I'm not sure that is so much influenced by the technology of the bomb itself....

The reason their development was so fast is because they received extensive help from the USSR, after they had already made and developed their own. Also the Chinese version used the Teller-Ulam design, a design that the Americans had developed in 1951, 16 years before the Chinese.
