We made snowmen on the Union North Lawn at the University of Florida and students in the residence halls tied up long distance lines for hours phoning home to tell the news. I first noticed a snowflake outside my window at Beaty Towers East (Room 1104) the night before the blast. Now I live in Michigan where we're getting hit today!
Eso fue bien real esta registrado y comprobado en la florida donde mas a caido nieve es en la parte norte y central en 2010 nevo en daytona beach y casi nevo en miami todo se congelo
It's rarely ever cold in southern Florida. It seems unlikely for it to snow in southern Florida. It's usually in the 70s. I've never been to southern florida in the winter, but i heard it's usually nice for the most part in the winter.
actually if you check the climate map south of Vero Beach is classified as tropical climate north is sub tropic. don't forget Miami has an average of 75 in January. the freeze weather was a fluke
Two corrections: First, you CANNOT see Cuba from Key West. The horizon only extends out less than 10 miles and Cuba is nearly 100 miles away at its closest point. If you think you saw it, you are wrong. Period. Second, as others have stated Miami is NOT in the tropics. This is a very common misperception. It is in the subtropical climate zone, meaning that it can (and will) get cold on occassion unlike true tropical locations such as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, etc.
WHY is anyone surprised. Miami is NOT the tropics. Miami is NOT a freeze free zone. Miami gets at least 40 degrees every winter. The record low was 27 degrees. The last few winters since 2003 it has been 37 most winters.
It is nothing more than a transitional zone with heavy temperate zone faetures.
no one said miami's tropical it just seems like that cuz of how warm it is compared to most of the country, i mean come on, compared to gatlinburg or nyc or minnesota, we have pretty warm winters and i've lived in nyc and we (miami) only get like 3 or 4 days a month (in winter of course) where it feels like your avg nyc winter day. and people are surprized because so far its only snowed TWICE Jan 19, 1977 and Jan 9, 2010. usually it gets cold but never snows PERIOD
@dramaking33 Even Northern Florida, for the most part stays warm in the winter. But yes anywhere can experience cold snaps. Some places just more then others.
no, according to the weather channel, anything below lake ochochobee have a truely tropical climate, just because it sees a freeze every 20 years doesn't mean its not tropical, you can go to beach in miami any day of the year, the only days we aren't able to go to the beach is when is either raining or the 3- 5 cold snaps like we haved 2 weeks ago
@JaneCarraro, You are wrong! Key West, Florida is freeze free zone! KEY WEST, FLORIDA IS TROPICAL. Whats the coldest temperature in cuba? 33.08 degrees farenheit on Feb 16, 1996.
@JaneCarraro Miami is tropical monsoon climate so in essence its tropical climate but with more humid weather. Plus this snowday happened only once in recorded history which means that YES people were surprised btw Miami is a few miles from Cuba
Oh, I can't believe this! It might snow in Florida and I live in Florida! OH YEAH!!! WE LEFT FOR GEORGIA ONE WEEK (Last week) NORTH GEORGIA IT WAS, IT SNOWED THERE EXACTLY 1 WEEK AGO ON SATURDAY. IF IT DOES SNOW HERE, IT WILL BE A TRUE MIRACLE BECAUSE MOST OF MY FRIENDS HAVEN'T SEEN SNOW!!! Let it snow!
@amberclayton0130 i live in inland miami dade county and im at least happy to know theirs a possibility of a wintry mix or brief flurries into the evening saturday, its always been my childhood dream for it to snow in miami but now theirs a window of opportunity where i'll either make it out or get my head stuck as it closes to my dissapointment.

Now PUERTP RICO , YOU CAN go to the beach ANYTIME of year.
Miami you CAN'T.
Nice lying though........
JaneCarraro 2 years ago
WRONG. Miami is NOT tropical.
MIami FREEZES OFICIALLY ABOUT EVERY 7 YEARS or so.
MANY times it COULD have snowed, but more is needed than JUST cold temps.
MIami will be upper 30's MOST winters. Miami is NOT tropical.
JaneCarraro 2 years ago
@JaneCarraro I agree, Miami is definately not Tropical. I was there one February and it was down right chilly when I arrived. Hawai'i is Tropical

I remember this. I was 11 and living in Kissimmee. If I recall correctly, the last time it snowed in FL (prior to 1977) was the 1898 winter.
mcduffiesteven 2 years ago
you mean south florida Bcuz it snow like by tallahassee every 3 years or so
dramaking33 2 years ago
Right. I am probably biased, but when I talk about Florida, I am talking about the peninsula, not the panhandle.
Even though I lived in Tallahassee for a while.

@mcduffiesteven I heard it snowed in Miami back in '71 and a footage is on YouTube seeing University of Miami students playing snowball.
