  • lucy liu is awesome :)

  • "The price you pay for bringing either my Chinese or American heritage is...I collect your fucking head."

  • @ajsaccount1991 Kill Bill XD

  • Sandra Oh is in this movie too!

  • Liu is also an artist in several media, and has had three gallery shows showcasing her collage, paintings, and photography

  • uhm ...its not chinese heritage...its thailand ?.....uhm yea

    i love lucy lui

  • @aliceskye its chinese.

  • @aliceskye as in, its shot in thailand but she is a chinese, and she spoke chinese in the movie:)

  • @aliceskye lucy liu is taiwanese. but in thailand.

  • @GOTCOL

    Thank god for that.

Judging by her looks, she MUST be from Taiwan. Real Chinese beauties are Zhang Zi Yi and Gong Li.

  • @weissman2000 yes taiwanese girls are the most beautiful ;)

  • @GOTCOL I believe you.....

  • @weissman2000 is that all you can say? lol gong li is ugly compared to lucy liu. zhang ziyi is hot though

  • @GOTCOL her parents r from beijing and shanghai.....go see on craig ferguson show

  • @shelherman but lucy liu is from taiwan so she is taiwanese. many people are ethnically chinese in taiwan, indonesia, thailand, phillipines, malaysia etc

  • @GOTCOL funny how she never mentions her taiwanese roots in her interviews... or at least from the interviews I've seen of her.

  • im a girl and i think she is so sexy and really humble!

  • People seem to lack the decency to at least google / wiki before they lashed out at others...

Mandarin = Putonghua. Mandarin (官話) is literally the official language. Putonghua is the lingua franca that everyone speaks in the country. If it's not Mandarin, then what can it be?

Putonghua is not based on Beijing accent (just ask any Beijing native). The standard version PRC teaches is closer to those spoken in China's Northeast. While Taiwan's standard version is closer to Zhejiang's accent.

  • Language can mean dialects when used loosely. When compared with dialect, the main difference is that language is supported by its own system of writing, while dialect isn't.

I am really not sure if Cantonese writing is sufficiently distinct from standard Chinese writing to warrant the label 'language'. I know Taiwanese attempts failed miserably though Given HK's closer proximity to China, smaller population base, and greater English fluency, I can't see how Cantonese writing can have a future.

  • @airhealth: There are major errors in your statements about Chinese. Cantonese writing *IS* standard Chinese ideograms, only pronounced differently. The ideograms mean the same thing regardless of dialect spoken so people who speak different dialects can actually communicate if they are literate. They are only a handful of ideograms specific to Cantonese & Hokkien which don't exist in Mandarin, e.g., the ideogram for "don't have"--it's two ideograms in Mandarin but one in the other 2.

  • @AppleMacGeek thanks for the rejoinder. Nowhere in my comments did I say Cantonese is not based on the standard Chinese ideograms. I knew that and that's why I questioned whether Cantonese writing is sufficiently distinct from standard Chinese writing to considered a separate language.

If Cantonese writing were entirely different from standard Chinese then surely it would qualify as a language beyond doubt. It isn't, and that's why there's even a debate about it.

  • @airhealth: And you're correct. I can't imagine how but I must've misread your original post. My bad.

  • isn't she TAIWANESE!!!

  • Lucy Liu is the epitome of what every Chinese-American woman should be in every way! Young Chinese women should strive to be like Lucy Liu, NOT Lisa Ling!! Lisa Ling is nothing more than a neurotic liberal feminist twit with poor taste in mates.

  • People should know that you might have Mandarin, Cantonese, Haka, or whatever, but the WRITTEN LANGUAGE IS THE SAME!!! so its just that everyone pronounces the worlds a little different. So it is not the same as differences in European languages with different alphabets etc.

  • It is true that you discover the law of gravity when you move your fingers to comment on this site

  • Madarin is the whole bunch of northern chinese languages.

Putonghua is the standard RP mandarin based on Beijing accent.

  • 外F女拍外F电影

  • Selling out for two.... we are letting North Korea move a chess piece up and potentially endanger millions. Such is the liberal paradigm.

  • Putonghua and Mandarin are the same thing. Taiwanese (or Minnanhua) is basically the same dialect as the one in Fujian province but the official language of Taiwan is Guoyu, which is another way of saying putonghua or Mandarin. The Taiwanese speak it with an accent but it's still Mandarin!

  • Lucy's parents were actually from Taiwan, not mainland China.

  • Fucken gross! Is that an extra tit hanging from her right armpit?

  • real asians in asia think of lucy liu as the dish that all stupid westerners love when they go into a chinese restaurant, but other asians hate. Believe me, asians in asia think she's is extremely repulsive in looks. I've never heard one asian guy say that she's hot. She looks like someone's grandmaother.Think of her as that two day old sweet and sour pork that the chinese chefs want to get rid off and serve to a white guy when he comes into the restaurant.

  • @insideangle1999: Bzzzt! Wrong. I'm "real asian" (born and bred in the Far East and pure ethnic Chinese) and I think she's hot So let's not generalize, shall we?

  • i wonder if she spoke cantonese or mandarin? maybe both?

  • mostly she speaks Mandarin coz her family name is LIU, which uses Mandrin phonetic system. the same character spelled as LAU in Cantonese.

  • Mandarin is her first language, she didn't start to learn English until she was 7-8. She spoke a few Mandarin sentences while on Letterman when he brought up the subject.

  • Host : Tata Young

    Language : Thai

  • lucy liu is a goddess...I think it is so beautiful that even when she's grown up she spends time with her mother - that shows she's a caring person - <3 love you lucy

  • Furhter more, those who use the term "self hating white wannbe" might want to consider the idea that one doesn't necessarily have to identify themself with any one single culture. And who are you to say that? I'm from HK and I grew up in Australia, while the way I am is definitely somewhat westernized doesn't mean my cultural heritage means nothing to me. Which is, I believe, the case with many people who grew up or were exposed to a culture not their own.

  • Chinese can be classified as a language simply because it includes our many dialects, of which there are seven major ones. I can assure you that the people from Northern China will have no idea what those coming from Southern China are saying, it's all too different. Cantonese can be counted as a language in itself, it's the language used in Hong Kong, Putongua is the one used in the Mainland and Mandarin the one used in Taiwan. Blame orientalism for the generalization.

  • Mandarin is a prominent language in Mainland China, Taiwanese dialect is a bit altered from Mandarin. By the way it is "Pu tong hua" and I believe that is Mandarin as it is the most common language and that is what "Pu tong" means. Also, please do not use the word oriental when referring to Chinese people. Oriental is used to describe a rug or furniture, we are Asian or Chinese.

  • well ,actually mandarin and pu tong hua is a same language mate.

  • Well, actually, seeing as how you're from China, I expected you to understand the minor difference. I am well aware that Putonghua (普通話, yes? I know) and Mandarin as languages sound extremely similar. Letting dialect differences slide. However, I was under the impessions that Mandarin is more commonly associated as the language spoken in Taiwan while Putonghua is more commonly associated at the language spoken in Mainland China. Anyway, thank you for the enlightenment mate.

  • hi , sorry for my bad english. actually i'm from indonesia and i study at fudan univ. well, in my opinion that every places that speaks mandarin/pu tong hua have their pronouncation. as u are hongky have a different mandarin with people in taiwan , even for cantonese they have difference. well , my mom is cantonese but she's speak different from hongkong people. btw nice to meet u , u're beautful

  • Oh, you're from Indonesia, that would explain the mild confusion. No worries, the differences between Mandarin and Putonghua is political more than anything. Politically, there's no Mandarin in Mainland China, there's only Putonghua and then all the different regional/provincial/ethnic dialects. Frankly, it confuses the hell out of me! I speak mostly Cantonese, since I live in HK, and a lot of times people in Mainland China won't understand me if I speak Cantonese :P Nice to meet you too :)

  • really? when i was learning 中文in my country , we call 中文 as mandarin. and 普通话itself means ordinary language that all people can speak. well i think zhongwen/putonghua and mandarin is a same language, i didn't that there's political differences. btw where are u come from? u'rn't from hk right?

  • Before the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong back to Mainland China, the language that you learned (Mandarin/Putonghua, just not Cantonese) was called Mandarin. After the Handover, it's officially referred to as Putonghua. Pu-tong can mean both "ordinary" and "common", the latter is really what it means. It was another way to unify China under the communist regime. So Mandarin is the language in Taiwan, Putonghua the one in Mainland China. Yes they sound the same, but they're not considered the same :)

  • So really, the political correctness factored in when the 1997 Handover took place. Especially since Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, whilst part of China, is mostly considered Special Administrative Regions in their own right, with government systems for each that isn't the same as the one in China that's administrated from Beijing.

Yeah, I'm from HK, but I lived in Taiwan when I was really young, and I grew up in Sydney, Aus. I'm back in HK now, but I go back to Mainland China often :)

  • freakin, mandarin=putonghua, it's just another way of saying it. relax mate.

  • I was just explaining, and I'm sure you're aware that text isn't the best way to convey tone. I still stand by the idea that it's two different languages due to political correctness if nothing else. Out of curiosity, have you ever visited China and her S.A.R.'s?

  • yes, my tone is exactly what u think it is. god, i personally came from beijing and have been watching taiwanese tv shows all my life, been to hk and tw and permanently live where u do. so yes, i know what i'm saying perfectly, and mandarin=putonghua. full stop.

  • Yes Your Majesty.

I'm not questioning your validity, seems like you need to chill now. I propose to agree to disagree, I'm not going to agree that they're the same thing, despite sounding very much alike, and you are clearly going to maintain that they're the same thing. I'm open to the idea that someone may have a different perspective than mine, but I'm not beyond stating my opinion. Fair?

  • PS. When I mentioned tone, I think you misunderstood me. I was referring to my tone, where I wasn't trying to be aggressive, merely explanatory. Not yours.

  • It is.. =)

  • pu tong hua = mandarin, tingaaling was right and taiwanese dialect is a bit different, it's something called "min nan yu",correct me if I am wrong.

  • Hollywood script writers needs to do some research before making up Chinese names... Jin Ping? You go to any rural area in China, and you find me a Jin Ping.

Trust me on this. I'm not overreacting. Just fed up.

  • My name is Ting Gong... haha so yea names can get pretty strange and I don't understand the rural part because majority of China would be considered rural.

  • Lucy is the best!

Hating her is due to jealousy!

Keep up the good works and a good year for you, Lucy!

    God bless

  • i think shes cute, i would toss her salad

  • shut up, racist.

  • this is in thailand? thats cool, im thai

  • I love Lucy Liu. But I dont understand why some people would hate her. You can like or not care...why hate...it does not make sense.

  • the psychological term is called "projection"

  • @piggymay712 well in china shes considered ugly, but in america shes considered beautiful and tht got her famous so alot chinese ppl dont like her

  • She's not a piece of white trash. If you dislike her so much, then why did you even click on this video. People like you should shut up and not post comments if you got nothing good to say.

  • What the hell are you talking about??

  • seriously, wtf r u talking about

  • what the fuck are you talking about? -__-"

  • lucy liu is my cousin...haha.

  • shes not chinese. shes a self hating white wanna be so she can stfu

  • What the fuck are you talking about, bitch~

  • im talkin about how she didnt give a shit about asian roots b4 when she was gettin attention from white guys but now that she loses her popularity, she tries to get acceptance from asian community. bitch~

  • And what the fuck makes you think that she didn't give a shit about asian roots?

  • why the fuck r u taking this personally? and she doesnt give a shit about asian roots cuz she agrees to negative stereotypes on asian males with white guys to gain their popularity and yet, she used her being an asian minority status in the film industry to be successful. she even requested for the movie kill bill that in that role her father is white and mother is asian even tho in the origina story it was the other way around, etc, ..countless stories for i could mention

  • I just need to defend the people I look up to. But what ever roles she took doesn't mean she doesn't give a shit about asian roots. When the hell did she agreed to negative stereotypes on asian males?

  • saying stupid shit like all asian males are short, feminine, and etc. too lazy to look it up right now. the only one that pops up at the top of my head is her saying that shit during interview on the E and her proposed that in movie kill bill, the story should be changed so that the father is white and mother is asian instead of the other way around which was the original play.

  • Well, so what, I don't even find that too offending. That's still not enough to call her a self hating white wannabe.

  • wow, you must really hate her..... but honestly, what you say is all about perception because you don't really know her. and what you say is really bias.

  • well then she needs to be aware of what she says because what u say/do reflects what you are dont u think? and everyone is biased to a certain degree. u maybe biased in her favor

  • honestly, i don't even like lucy liu or watch her movies for that matter so i can't really be bias in her favor. i'm just giving her the benefit of the doubt because i don't know her. but everyone has their own opinion and is free to express it. so i have no problem with you expressing what you think.

  • well thank you for that input. my intention isnt to offend anyone, but this is an online crap where everyone talks crap about everything so i guess i was a lil careless. but i just feel like asian males are getting bombarded with all these negative stereotypes and asian female celebrities tend to bash on their counter part in order to get support from american media (controlled by white males) so i feel a lil betrayed

  • i can see what you're talking about now. well, i think asian guys are hot!!!! lol.

  • what? i don't remember her father being white, wasn't the father a cartoon drawing? was there another version of that movie?

  • she was dating asians b4 hollywood. i've seen her in magazines & her dates are asian guys since her days on ally mcbeal. she always tell ppl mandarin is her 1st language & she did not learn english til 5yrs.old even though she was born & raised in new york. don't know where you heard it from, that she doesn't care about her asian roots. she majored in asian language & culture in college. barriers to establishing herself as a more credible "asian" actress may be due to her semi-fluent mandarin.

  • she was born & raised in the USA. US culture is influenced by whites. how is she a white wannabe? by speaking & reading english? exactly what you're doing right now? by talking to white directors, producers, actors, actresses about movie/tv scripts? the entertainment industry is majority white. how is it avoidable to interact w/ other races if she is to become an actress? b4 you make claims, you should explain why & what makes you feel lucy is a "self-hating white wanna be".

  • so hot.

  • Interesting interview. Might give this film a try.

  • loved her on ally mcbeal. ha...

  • apparently lucy thinks chinese is a language...

it's usually either mandarin or cantonese, but there's no such language as chinese

  • cantonese is not a language either. it's a dialect.

  • Linguistically speaking, Cantonese is considered a Language (not a dialect) because it's as different to Mandarin as Spanish to Italian.

China is a vast country, Original Mandarin and Cantonese speaking regions are so far apart. If Canton was a separate country from Northern China, then Cantonese would be considered a language and not just a dialect.

  • The way you speak, sounds so typical Hongky

  • I feel that there are enough factors involved that I personally consider Putonghua and Mandarin different. I'm not even sure those who speak Mandarin would like their language to be regarded the same as Putonghua, and visa versa. I may be wrong. I respect that you and everyone else are entitled to your interpretations, but in saying that, I also feel that I'm entitled to mine.

"Min Nan Yu" ("Southern Min Dialect") refers to a dialect of Chinese spoken in and around Fujian. Hope that helps : )

  • Actually Putonghua is Mandarin haha

There are actually different dialects in minanyu, because people from taiwan speak it, but it is different than the ones spoken in fujian, but they're both considered minnayu

  • I am satisfied to agree to disagree. Maybe having lived in HK, Taiwan and parts of the Mainland have influenced my views some what, but my opinion on the nature and differences of these languages are as valid as yours and anyone else's.

Yeah, I know there are more dialects within China that most people would be aware of, and their numbers make the definitions of "language" and "dialects" ambiguous.

Thank you for not being directly abrasive and confrontational though.

  • That's only because you checked my profile. Yes, I am from HK but my family's Mandarin, so I'm NOT taking sides if that's what you're suggesting!

    And I have a good friend who's a linguist.

What's wrong with being from HK?!

Cantonese and Mandarin are from the same language family but Cantonese is grammatically and phonetically different enough to be a language. Would u say Spanish is an Italian dialect because they're both Latin languages??!

And China's big enough to have different languages.

  • Actually, the core mechanics of Cantonese and Mandarin are the same as they belong to the same written language group. There are some slight vernacular vocab and grammar pattern variations due to regional influence, just like how Northeast U.S has different vernacular tendencies than the south or Britain. Of course, Mandarin and Cantonese have totally different pronunciations which can make them be considered as different spoken languages.

  • lol chinese is a language, mandarin and cantonese are dialects of the chinese language.

  • whatever you have to tell yourself.

anyone who's not ignorant knows chinese only applies to a people and is not a language.

if you think she would know because she's chinese then you're oblivious to the fact that she was born in NYC and not China

  • Dude yes Chinese is a fuckin language. There are a few different versions of it but they call it Chinese.

When people say Chinese they usually mean Mandarin though.

  • She was just using the word Chinese as a general term for Mandarin for the Western audience. It's not like she had time to spend 20 minutes to explain how many dialects and languages that are spoken in China.

  • Worst Hair style on the planet.

  • her appearance shouldn't matter. rather you should focus on what is being discussed here.

  • ok..incase udunno..back in the old days..that hair style was pretty popular

  • To "NADALEES" in case "Udunno" as you put it, the movie was already completed and she was being interviewed in the "Present" and i stand by my comment. She has amazing hair, but this style looks bad on her.

  • ok..then u shoulda said that instead of worst hair style on the planet

  • Lucy is so cool, and she's such an inspiration.

  • the people were,,,,, hopfull they still are (what over reaction )
