  • Old school STILL RULES!

  • Joe's original all the way!

  • with all this talk about the letter p it makes me have to go p XD

  • Raposo rules!

  • Comment removed

  • I remember another cartoon with the letter P in which a stylised letter P appears at the end accompanied by gongs.

  • Absolutly the original one. I don't understand why they would ever change it.

  • The original is a million times better....

  • Joe would love you for this, Sawing14s. Thanks for keeping the faith and making the real version of this segment available to us all.

  • The newer version sounds so forced and babyish, and it doesn't match the animation at all. Peace.

  • I like the original music myself.

  • I like the old song better. It brings back good memories

  • I was just thinking about that Raposo song from my childhood watching Sesame...it was such a happy song. I'm glad that someone decided to post that memory on YouTube.

The second song...I'm with the rest of you...why change it?

  • Anyone who uses kazoo so effectively in his music is simply a genius. He could go from sublime to fun (not ridiculous) without missing a beat. Raposo is fabuloso! God rest your wonderful soul!

  • Hmmm... makes me want to take a P right now!!

Any suggestions where I should put my P? XD

  • how the fuck does this have 16 thousand views!!!

  • thats like the classic."theres a bird on me..they animated it and redid the song...

    old school forever!!!!!!

  • Raposo of course! That man came up with great songs for Sesame Street. I wish he and Jim Henson were still around. I have always hated the way they tamper with old classics like this. There is no need for it! Old School Sesame Street 4ever!!!

  • Doopliss approves.

  • There it is! Now I can finish Chapter 4!

  • Uh yeah thanks... give me the Raposo version any day. ^-^

  • In my opinion, it's a tie. They're both good.

  • Sesame Street is so plain, so watered down and PC that it's actually uncomfortable to watch...

  • 1: Perfect!

    2:poor

  • Original all the way! Don't they have anything better to do than ruin things by "fixing" what ain't broke?

  • P! P! P!

  • Now I have to go and take a P...

  • 1. Peppy

    2. Pathetic

  • If they wanted to update the music, why not redo the animation as well?

  • Bingo. A law needs to be passed that old Sesame Street animations and whatnot cannot be tampered with. They wouldn't be getting away with this crap is Jim Henson were alive.

  • I know what you mean. It's like the bozo's running SS now don't care what Henson thought. I'm under the impression the people running SS now have negative feelings about Henson. Like he was a bad man. That's why they don't think these old skits are okay for kids. :P

  • I definitely agree!

  • The original music is SO much better!!!its called "Classic" Sesame Street for a reason!!

  • I can't believe the powers that be at Sesame Workshop have the audacity to try and erase Joe Raposo's legacy from the show, as though he were some Stalin-era nonperson. They even changed the theme song, for chrissakes!

  • Tell me about it--a new arrangement every other season, dropping the bridge section...Joe Raposo is spinning in his grave for that, I'll bet!

  • First time is the winner! Tell the real Joan Ganz Cooney!

  • Haven't they ever heard of the saying, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it?!" The first music was absolutely perfect, the second one was pathetic! In essence, the classic wins again, over the supposed "new"!

  • Part 1: Perfect!

    Part 2: Pointless!

  • Why do they always insist on ruining a good thing?? New isn't better!!

  • Can anyone help me out? I remember one of these LETTER shorts having the Grateful Dead's "The Eleven" playing in the background. Can anyone else remember which one?

  • This is that short, and the music was from the Live Dead album, from a point shortly before "Turn on Your Love Light"

  • I knew I wasn't the only one who remember that version! Used to unsettle me, but the noise and beats fit the flickering sun.

    I agree, Raposo is best.

  • IF you think this one is bad. Try the NEW version of Joe Raposo's "I Believe in Little Things". I recently saw it on Sesame Street, with someone else singing this song... and computer animated dancing ribbons without any creative thought. It was like a slap in the face for those of us who remember how the originals were!

  • Wow - that "updated" version makes me want to P.

    Yuck

  • LOL!

  • The new version sounds flat and lifeless to me, like some second-rate ringtone.

  • Old school Raposo version ftw!

man, that clip chilled me out as a kid

  • Its good to realize how much a simple tune to a favorite cartoon memory is to people. Sesame street has so many memories no matter what age we are, but making these "modern" changes can really ruin the whole experience and makes our memories forgotten.

  • First of all: THANK YOU to whomever posted this!! I've been looking for it for over a year! Secondly, I had no idea there even "was" another soundtrack to this. That fact alone boggles the mind but the fact that there is even a debate as to which one is superior is truly perplexing. Come on!! Raposo's trademark combo of wah-wah guitar, flute, glockenspiel and kazoo over those quirky chord progressions is unbeatable. The new one sounds like some car alarm gone haywire, and is just as annoying.

  • You had to know ol' Raposofan was going to comment on this one! I've heard other "imitations" of what some folks think was Joe's music, on Noggin and from S. Workshop, and it's so offbase and insulting... Joe Raposo was one of a kind, and had a unique style - he wrote genuine MUSIC. Something from a can for $299 a needledrop is NOT. Poor Joe must be stunned hearing this from where he is in heaven.

Either that or nodding sagely to himself... saying "Mm-hmm"... then falling over laughing.

  • The original music is better. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • The original Joe Raposo music is the best!

  • The original is like the "P" has a personality that is quirky and cute. The second music just sounds like an elevator nightmare.

  • Definitely the original. :-)

  • The original! :-D

  • To borrow a "slogan" (sort of) from a certain Hasbro toy line, regarding the music:

    GO JOE!

  • Thou shalt not fix what was never broken. Enough said.

  • The Broken Commandment.

  • I always thought there was more to this

  • Actually they did some testing, first had kids watch with the original music. Part of them ran screaming from the room, the rest instantly began snoring. Then they ran a loop of the clip with "improved" music, and all the kids were glued to the monitor, refusing food or sleep for as long as 48 hours. It was uncanny. Great post!

  • How do you know? Were you working there at the time?

  • no, I was trying to be blatantly sarcastic. Impossible for me to imagine kids running out of a room because they heard Raposo's music.

  • I find that... hard to believe. A psychedelic "P" dropping from the sky with a psychedelic sun and the original music? Not exactly "frightening" when considering how much more of a hard edge TV has today.

  • In this case change was not a good thing. I don't like all of Raposo's music but in this case it was right.

  • Any remake or change on any classic clip is never going to be as good as the original, that's a fact.

  • Gotta go with my man Joe....his music was quirky and funky at the same time for this cartoon. A difficult feat to achieve.

  • Raposo's choice of instrument had that subliminal thing going too...P is for Piccolo, even if no one said that out loud. :-)

  • That's amazing that you could hear that. The guy was obviously a genius.

  • It's all about the Raposo music. Why do they think "oh, we've got to change this". Raposo is a genius, and to change the music is sacrelige. Thanks for posting that, by the way!

  • Amen. Some aspects of Sesame Street do need changing to keep the current audience, BUT...Joe Raposo's music is not one of them. His work is a lot more memorable and timeless than the mechanical-sounding tunes Sesame Workshop dubs into classic clips now!

  • I like the original one best

  • There was a third version of this as well, with rock music and a male voice narrating the "Ps".

  • Hmm ... which episode would that be in?

  • I don't know, but I've got it as a part of a clip compilation from "Open Sesame" in Canada.

  • Why bother changing the soundtrack if you're keeping the same animation? The old addage applies here... If it ain't broke don't fix it.

  • totally the original. but im sure you already knew that! ;)

  • Keep the original music.

  • the original
