  • This is the easier part.. The tom/kick/hi-hat polyrhythm in the verses are what gets me..

  • Thank you so much I actually learned this from this video THANKS!

  • @TheDarkcrow99 You are quite welcome! Thank YOU for watching...

  • I actually struggle with the first part (the hi-hat-only part)! I have no problems playing the second part (i.e. the full beat which you tutorialized).

It's just that hi-hat rhythm that always confuses me......

  • @kevman237II if it would be usefull if you are used to play the quintuplets u can think of it as quintuplets in 4/4 with the first 16th note played witha a double or a diddle if u want (in 32th notes) weirdly it fits xD

but i can't figure it out what is playing on the second part

i guess the snare is on the 5th note of the 5/8 beat and the kick seams playing the firsts 3/8 and the hi-hat is reminds me the groups of 5 accents but when i count it doesnt fits! how do you count all this mess?xD

  • @13TeK11 I actually don't count when I play this part, because it's counterproductive for me -- it screws up my rhythm, ironically. However, if you are counting this part, I believe it's as follows:Overall: 5/8 beat.Snare: You are correct. The snare is on the fifth (i.e. last) eighth note, and I always make it an accent as well.Hi-Hat sticks: Just play straight sixteenths. Accent all four of the opens (see second post). Also accent with the lone snare hit.

  • /\2nd post/\ Hi-Hat foot: Keep closed on all but four notes. Open on (a) the first eighth note; (b) the second eighth note; (c) the sixth sixteenth note {i.e. halfway between the third eighth note and the fourth eighth note}; and (d) the eighth sixteenth note {i.e. halfway between the fourth eighth note and the fifth eighth note}. Equivalently, if you can count all ten of the sixteenth notes, just play open on 1, 3, 6, and 8, and closed on 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10. An "X/O" tab would be: XoXooXoXOo

  • Bass Drum: Kick on the first four sixteenth notes, the sixth sixteenth note, and the eighth sixteenth note. Here's a helpful tip/observation: every time you kick with your bass foot, you should simultaneously switch the hi-hat position with your other foot.I can see how/why this part is difficult for many people. I should mention that I'm ambidextrous (and I also play open-handed -- like Carter Beauford -- instead of the usual cross-handed), which probably makes this part much easier for me.

  • What hihat is that?!

  • snare (Y)

  • Good job man

  • thank you!

  • i tryed this over & over again

    i can't and don't know why

    -.-'

  • @metallica6020 just keep trying till you go maaaadddd

  • Your snare sounds boom ass titties. I love it.

  • I don't care how complex it is as long as it sounds good. This is mind-blowing

  • wow you really need a fast and responsive pedal for that dont you? I have a sonor pedals but they aren't that fast and responsive. i read on the net about how you should tighten the spring tension.

    any suggestion guys?

  • @punkstreetpunk As long as the spring tension is comfortable for you and it allows you to maximize your energy, you'll be able to play this with no problem. Try a tighter tension but I generally like to tighten my kick drum head so the beater bounces off of it more easily. That's how I go for more responsive... Hope that helps!

  • @punkstreetpunk well actually i'm playing that with cheapest pedals from mapex (i bought it for ~70$) I'd say technique matters

  • MUCH APPRECIATED! you got some serious skills and like mentioned many times ur expansive kit sounds wicked, especially the kick. i look forward to an aenima tutorial. this will help tremendously.

  • @motown358 Thanks again! I'm glad these videos have been so useful for people. As for Aenima...I don't have my drums with me now but I have it on my list of videos to make yet...

  • I've been playing drums for 12 years and I'm sweating up a storm after playing this song. This guy has some real talent, respect!

  • dude that snare has a bitchin tone, how did you get that?

  • Im trying to learn this song, coming back to this after i get everything else! The back music really does mess you up.

  • thanks heaps for this video, it really helped and now just reading the notation and everything has made this groove just about come naturally for me!

  • If you transcribe this in 10/8 with a pair of quintuplets, the hi-hat pattern will be symmetric. Try it out, it makes more sense.

  • Hasta matematico... chaleeeeee

  • Wow, never realized he was doing a 5/8 over a 6/8. I just thought it was a really fucked up pattern he was playing. Mind. Officially. Blown.

  • Awesome video! Your drumset is badass! I would do terrible and regretable things to obtain such a badass drumset.

  • @iheartbulletsx Thank you very much! I appreciate your kind words and feedback. Although you shouldn't have to do terrible things to have this drum set! I just mowed lawns for a few summers and that did it....haha

  • When the measure is played slower, Its obvious where he was going with this. Listening carefully to the kick and the hat, It sounds like a heartbeat, the kick being the heart, the hat being the blood, and the snare being the rhythm by matching the body at rest when it breathes. He adds to the song at that point to continue the golden ratio, which life revolves around. Its quite amazing, actually.

  • What superdouche would dislike this video.. Awesome job man! One of the most badass songs ever!

  • @drfroglegs Haha, I laughed when I read this comment. "Superdouche..." That's pretty funny. Thank you so much for the comment. Take care!

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • tbh I did not find it too hard to figure it out what he plays there. the thing is to play it^^

  • Does playing with the rubber side of the beater give more of a punch to the bass like shown in your video or does the felt side? I really like the sound of your bass drum. And does tuning the resonant head higher than the batter head have something to do with getting a good sound?

  • @Zynpar09 Yeah, rubber will give you more punch. But I like the feel and bounce of a felt beater. I'm just used to it at this point. Yeah, the resonant head is a bit tighter than the batter head. Just a half turn tighter I'd say. It's hard to explain, you have to try all different combinations and go with your favorite. Thanks for watching!

  • The way I taught myself this pattern was to imagine maynards voice in rosetta stoned, Im outta my head, am I alive or am I dead etc. then theres two open high hats for the 4 kicks and 2 open before the snare hit

  • 1:47! dude!!!!! that rim shot and china mash is the sweetest moment of drumming ive ever heard! its so epic im actualy playing it over and over again ha pure power!

  • @thickpooxbox360 haha, thanks! Glad you liked it!

  • @thickpooxbox360 Yeah gosh, that exact spot sounds like the reason why im playing drums! Love this!!

  • Thumbs up if you want to see more videos of just Danny Carey sitting at a kit blasting! This guys is amazing too

  • nice tutorial... good job

  • @wentafew Thank you. I appreciate it!

  • Dude, that is a fucking mean as drumkit, and I like the lights going everywhere ha ha.

  • @JazztheHeadbanger Thanks a lot. I'm glad you like it! Take care.

  • Danny really PLAYS music, not just easy straight drum patterns (as you can see in shitty bands nowadays). I mean, writing your own music in this complex patterns is not something you simply ignore as a fan.

  • @zorac91 That's right. They're supposedly going to write a new album soon. I wonder what the complexities will be this time...

  • @wildbill1240 i still dont get it. lol. haha its ok. thats danny carey for us i guess. do you happen to have the beggining of this song? or any others?

  • @napkinshower No, I don't, sorry! I wish I did. I was thinking about doing an Aenima tutorial. I'm not sure if that would help anyone.

  • @zorac91 very true

  • @zorac91 if ther even is drum patterns in the music

  • ok now my brain hurts......

  • Holy shit... I got a lot to practice!

  • impressive man

  • Man, thanks so much for doing this.

  • @AmazingShortbus You are quite welcome, thank you for watching!

  • @wildbill1240 snare sounds effing amazing!!! lm 402???

  • @sparkles67 Thanks, it's actually just a Pearl brass piccolo. I think it sounds better in some other videos, but it works here I guess.

  • omg sum one can even get that close to being as good as DANNY THE MAN CARRY!! Im impressed!! great video dude!!

  • @waz4477 thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • enough kinds with strobe lights in their bedroom posting drum vids! j/k....nice video.

  • @DeLL116 Well, it's the basement...so I guess it's good to go! Thanks a lot for the compliment.

  • cheers.

  • awesome!!!

  • @monkeygod69 thanks!

  • I love how the drums are off beat it just makes there Sound More amazing :)

  • When I listen to this song, the drums always get so messed up in my head. I try to follow the time of them, and the competing signatures just screw me over. I play guitar and some of the odd signatures in this song give me problems from time to time.

  • @JimVincent Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I think most people struggle with the same problem. It's just mind blowing how they came up with this in the first place... Best thing to do is just write it out and slow it down!

  • @wildbill1240 Typically the best thing to do is just play something else. =D

    Nice kit, BTW.

  • the "pattern" is called a poly-rhythm

  • what kick drum is that????

  • @allmetaliswelcome Yamaha Maple Custom, 22", details in profile....

  • Thank you, just, thank you

  • @flipknut You are quite welcome!

  • That snare sounds horrible (probably bad processing), but great playing man!

  • @Dexterprog Yeah, it does sound horrible...definitely fixed it in later videos. Thanks for the compliment, though!

  • that was great thanks.

  • @XnamelessDeathX You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • That kick drum is sooo... FULL-sounding, I got goosebumps man... Wish I could play drums, I just play the bass. But I love to analyze the every single beat in one song. Helps a sucker to keep up with difficult drum patterns.

  • @AdrianStick Ha, that's great that you liked my kick sound that much. I honestly haven't gotten it to sound this good since this video. It was tuned perfectly when I recorded this song. It's also amazing to see so many bassists watching this video. I guess it's good that you guys are interested in the drum patterns since you're a vital part of the rhythm section!

  • @AdrianStick Same here, with every word, bro. Keep on rocking. \m/_

  • Funny, it must have worked because it's literally my favorite part of any song ever.

  • - This is the easy part of the song, but my kick pedal is shit so I can't get the 4 kicks in fast enough.

  • Dude has a weak kick drum technique.

Foot vs leg action. Don't mean to repudiate efforts, but think using leg will improve timing and give better kick-drum tone (ie: more punch, less boom).

Slight synchopation in some of your kick beats.

  • doenst danney carey base his drumming on maths? ( i dunno somthing i have herd)

  • its easy to play it along with the recording.....but not with my band

  • @Guns8000 ha, that's funny. Not many musicians can grasp this music!

  • @wildbill1240 lol the bands very good, we've been playin our instruments for many years...but the middle part we always get lost, we've succeded once

  • @Guns8000 Nice! Yeah, I've never attempted this song with a band. I can only imagine how hard it is to pull off. good luck!

  • thanks for the breakdown. I just could not figure out the timing on this one (trying to pick it up by ear). Slowing it down and showing how you added the bass in gradually was really helpful for "catching" it.

  • @brownsound00 You are welcome. I'm glad that you found it helpful. Take care!

  • Much appreciated tutorial. That was well broken down to human level - as opposed to the freakish genius of danny - although the bit where you gradually added parts could have been drawn out a little more just to give time to get a feel for the groove. Other than that, thanks!

  • @Skeve4 Hey, you are quite welcome. It's good to know that this was an effective video for some. Perhaps I will make more...

  • sick

  • @poop321cg thanks!

  • One of my fav songs!!!!! WOW!!!

  • I'm curious to see how you play the main polyrythm though (the 5/8 that starts at ~1:38 into the song), as I've seen it played several different ways, and have learned about 4 different ways myself. I figure you just might have some insight I don't know about.

  • @wrenchman82 Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Honestly I've never tried to play that one exactly like Danny does. I'll have to double check Modern Drummer but they may have transcribed that part, too. It is a genius pattern!

  • @wrenchman82 Well, I just looked and the Modern Drummer transcription covers a few bars of the generic pattern. I can send it to you if you message me your e-mail. Hopefully it will help some...

  • sounds great! keep it up

  • @deadeyedale thank you! I will try to keep making more videos when time allows!

  • you are so good I can play laterlos but not that good.:)

  • I made a version just likke this

  • Yeah realistically I don't even think the diddy after the the tutorial part was even necessary I loved this video, it's breaks it down in a way everyone can understand, and for that I see absolutely nothing wrong with this video. Very informative.

  • Well thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. I'll keep everyone's ideas in mind for future videos.

  • Hey, nice tutorial, well shot and everything. I'm not trying to insult or troll here, but man was that sloppy sounding. Especially at the end of the poly-rhythm, your re-entry into 6/8 was pretty stinky. You've got the math down, now play it in the pocket! Cheers!

  • Well, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you liked the tutorial, but was it really that sloppy? I have a digital audio workstation (Pro Tools) and I can visually verify that each kick and snare hit lined up exactly where they were supposed to. I know I'm not Danny Carey, but that's what the disclaimer at the end said.

  • dont listen to that douchebag you did perfect

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to come off so harsh. I mostly just meant the drum fill right at the end of the polyrhythm. Also, it does sound to me like there are a few slightly off areas during the polyrhythmic part itself. I'm not trying to be a dick, you can play it better than I can. All I'm saying is it doesn't groove that well.

  • No worries! I understand exactly what you are saying. There is definitely some discord in my playing. Although Danny may have played to a click he put his feel and style into the track and I am putting my feel and style over top of him and the click track so it will naturally be off. If I were anywhere near as good as Danny I'd have millions of views...but I don't. But you are correct. That's why I just try to teach a section...I couldn't groove this whole song!

  • Same man, when I play along with Tool stuff just for fun, I feel like I'm playing like a third of what he's playing, and it's still hard. That guy is unbelievable.

  • @wildbill1240 How do you make your bass drum sound so dominent? It sounds awesome. What kind of skins are you using on both sides of your bass drum?

  • @LateralusDrummer (uploader) My bass drum's head is tuned just one turn past its loosest setting - so plenty of low end. There is an Evans EQ pad in there with a fairly tight (but not cranked tight) resonant head. Microphone is in the middle of the drum. Use equalization to pull out a lot of 400 Hz and boost a lot of 50 Hz (and some at 4kHz for more attack). Also, use a compressor to give it a nice punch. (oh and EQ3 on batter, Vintage Heads Custom resonant head).

  • @wildbill1240

No, it was quite good. I think what spibbly is referring to is that there seems to be a slightly off-sync transition where you switch from 5/8 into 6/8. It could be due to the overlay of the drumming with the soundtrack, but I can also tell it's there. Aside from that, dead on.

    Good tutorial, incidentally. Kudos.

  • @wrenchman82 yeah, I would agree with that. Definitely not the smoothest performance.... Well thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it. I'll try to make more! Take care.

  • Wildbill, your videos are excellent. I'm a complete hack drummer and love to see others who can master these complex things and explain them. Huge fan of Danny and Tool as well.

  • Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Hopefully Danny Carey will release so more stuff in the future... I've been sitting on my Aenima tutorial for awhile now...haven't posted it. I thought I might buy the Danny Carey Signature snare that is just out and use that in the video. We shall see....

  • aaaaahhh....I love that feeling when you finally stick a beat down after going over, and repeating it so many times.....yes TRIUMPH!!!....i need a beer....

  • Excellent! Glad to hear it went well!

  • Yes the bass is better in this one! Another great video. Very clean and informative.

  • Hey, thanks for checking it out. I'm glad you agree! Stay tuned for an Aenima tutorial next....

  • fucking amen to that. anyone who thinks that just isnt a real drummer.

  • Danny supposed to be better in maths than travis...

  • @Zofti travis is alrite but i wudnt compare him to daney carey. travis is more like a side show freak. dany is an artist. i feel like travis is more about his image, whereas daney carey is only about the music. why do people keep bringing up travis like he's some next level shit when really he's just another punk drummer (maybe a bit faster) there are far greater drummers than him.

  • this is so sick, danny is one of the best rock drummers ever cuz he doesn't just play a straight boring rock beat like traviz barker, who's extent of talent is to play at 100 mph!

  • @TheChuckToTheNorris travis is restricted to playing punk music that's always in 4/4. and regardless he makes it sound incredibly original/different. so don't go dumping on him. they're different drummers with different styles who play to different music. so u have no way of really comparing them. Unless ur making the comment irrationally based on the fact that ur a carrey fanboy :(

  • Danny Carey is so fuckin talented....he is leading the way in this generation where the greats like Bonham and Moon left off. All you haters wished you were half as good as he is.

  • Forget these haters.. No matter what, there's always these trolls who have to say "you're not doin it right!". I wish I could play this song that well. Nice Work

  • Nice and accurate tutorial. Got any more?

  • thank you, yes...I have the Eulogy tutorial and an Aenima one in the making...

  • easy

  • Understood. I like the way your snare sounds... Well, the whole kit.

  • Thanks! I like the kick sound the most in this video...probably the cleanest sound I've gotten. Fortunately I saved the wave file! Take care.

  • Nice kit you have. Tool is one of my favourite bands but im not upto standard to play this yet lol but im gonna keep practicing.

  • Thank you. Yeah, most of their songs are just too daunting to take on. I just try to practice little parts like this that I feel could be useful to have for other patterns. Keep up the work and you'll get it!

  • awesome tutorial. got the coordination down in less than 10 minutes. Now i just have to work on the tempo. damn this slow right foot!

  • Thank you very much. I'm very glad that you found it helpful. Haha, I yell at my feet to speed up sometimes, too. It's frustrating! You'll get the muscle memory down soon.

  • wow im in awe of all the great drummers commenting here.if your not danny dont try his stuff ,its easy ect..lmao..wish i could play half as good and had half your kit.if your better great post it lets see.dont crap on about how good you are and how much someone else sucks.

  • Thanks for your input! I appreciate you setting the record straight. Lots of people should be posting a better version if they are so able. Oh well...lots of empty threats. Take care!

  • you didn't play it exactly like danny carey.

  • what was off?

  • yeah he didnt play it correctly, even though he give u the link to the tab!!!

  • Man, I love the way your drums sound.

  • if you "didnt play it exactly like danny" then why even try and teach someone something thats not right

  • the part that is transcribed is played exactly right and the part that is not transcribed is improvisation

  • are you kiding that beat is easy. but i could not of just made that up, danny carey is a machine, in a good way.

  • Really good sounds! Great mics

  • I'm not a drummer and believe I have no chance at learning to do so, so I just admire peoples abilities to do it.... That said-- Great video. I enjoyed it!!!

  • Haha, well it might just take a little extra practice for some people but I'm sure you can do it! Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. take care.

  • wicked!!!!

  • thanks! I'm glad you still find my old videos useful...I'll try to make some new ones when time permits...

  • Great tutorial. That drum beat has bemused me for ages, After watching that I might actually be able to have a crack at it.

  • Excellent. Best of luck!

  • this was helpful! can't all drumvideos on youtube be like this?

  • haha, thanks! I know...there are a lot of videos on youtube that just plain waste space!

  • polymeters<3

  • dude what mic did u use on the kick?

  • AKG D112, details in profile!

  • whats the snare you use here???

  • Pearl Brass Piccolo, details in profile!

  • well, thanx first!I intend to buy pearl piccolo steel snare 13x3!do you think its good??

  • Yeah definitely. Pearl makes good stuff. I've heard the wood piccolo and liked it so I imagine the steel shell is great too. I'd own them all if i could!

  • Great to see someone giving relevant, useful help like this. Straightforward and to the point; well done Bill, I bet there's a lot of drummers out there who appreciate this.

  • Thank you very much! I appreciate that feedback. It does make me consider the possibility of making more tutorials. Take care!

  • i love it.

    but....

    too much snare.

  • agreed

  • w00t no triggers. how do u lke the eliminators. i wanna upgrade to them or iron cobras. and what do u seem are more controllable: straps direct drive or chain

  • I like my eliminators. The only other thing I'd go with are some DW9000s. Chains are very smooth and let me feel the pedal better...but it's all user preference.

  • Pearl Demonators are amazing

  • Horrible Comment... and bollocks? Hmm you must be english... BOOO!

  • yes and...... your problem is????

  • do u use triggers or is our bass drum miced?

  • It's all mic'd, no triggers!
