  • Yea my quad core and radeon 5770 get really laggy performance with wine in ubuntu :(

  • Why does it mater if whine is an emulator or not, some people are way to sensitive!

  • Does games like WOW work better through Cedega than Wine? Now im using Wine and the graphics are low for some reason...

  • can you play the sims 2 with cedega

  • i use ubuntu for everything, but for aoe2..

  • WHAT THE FUCK, my old 9600xt didn't even run Carbon?? Seems like Linux can run games really well!

  • @P1nkOwns booo :) ++

  • what is everyones favorite gun? i really like the rpg myself. it's really easy to be able to rip up everyone with it! my roomie calls me a noob for using it however who cares. i am kinda new maybe! however , at least i didnt be forced to pay for the game. i downloaded it absolutely free from mw2forfreeZinfo (replace Z with . ) last week

  • so laggy.... xp for the win

  • @deadguy718 must people who run Linux used to run Windows

your probably a stupid kid anyways

  • @deadguy718 Linux is for people who hack your windows or mac

  • I believe the reason the game looks choppy is due to your hardware not being the best it could be and possibly some video tweaks could fix it. I do agree Linux can be used for gaming purposes. It is just hard for people to understand that. Th amjor issue recently with Linux is poor driver support and it is slowly but surely getting better. Nvidia is one company that has gotten better about the driver support for graphics cards ATI not so much.

  • idc wat anyone says i love linux i set it up on my pc as a 2nd os and im not disappointed!

  • Nice nice man.I use ubuntu too and I am too gamer.And I don´t need windows for gaming.For this I windows don´t have.Good work.Linux FTW!!!

  • Windows sucks. But for gaming it's better.Linux is better for scripting and stuff like that. But linux is not bad for gaming but Windows is better.

  • this just prooves that games could work easily on windows AND linux, but microsux is microsux

  • i dont really know anything about linux but is it possible to play games, download music and movies with

    AMD Phenom II x3

    3GB Crucial DDR3 RAM

    Radeon HD 4870

    WD Caviar 500gb

  • From itunes? no, limewire yes frostwire yes, gaming some such as this MW, MW2

  • Simple, Dual Boot.

  • probably because the 'programs' you're are talking about are made for windows, BY MICROSOFT.

  • I hope he means Vmware/Virtual box

  • @pr0mof0 yeh but there are currently 20 000 virus' in the wild on windows, there are virtually zero on linux. not to mention 99.9% of software is free and easy to find. how life the net of the bot?

ill give you an example of the differences of linux. i recently bought a usb headset, which is pent about an hour trying to setup with ths shit drivers that were supplied. the device wouldnt be recognised by windows and my usb mouse ceased to work, so trying to reinstall my usb drivers...

  • @pr0mof0 i had to dig out my ps2 adapter to get my mouse working, and reinstall my usb drivers; and hopefully my headset drivers. only to find my ps2 adapter is fucked. so i gave up in the end. 2 minutes later i booted up linux, plugged in my headset and low and behold the dam thing worked. isnt that ironic??

  • @pr0mof0 Linux is for people that deem windows to be undesirable. I drew the line at 2000, i downright refuse to get any windows past it. i'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and i frequently play online with the rest of my friends on Ventrilo. so to further bash your argument, not all games and programs run on windows. the choice is neither easy nor hard. some prefer windows, others linux. :P

  • really i got bejeweled didn't work on windows 7...

  • for games? PS3.

  • Yeah play a MMORPG with that.

    Try hard.

  • @nversus World of warcraft runs better on linux than it does on windows. just to name one... theres alot more

  • @Breathoffog My comment is for the guy that said "games? buy PS3". I would play games on my opensuse 10.3 if ATI take care of their agp cards under linux.

  • In San Andreas you can remove the map and the hud, just have a look on the settings

  • I suggest you get a NVIDIA-Card for Linux. More stable, better drivers and much faster!

The ATI-FGLRX-Drivers are crap. (Sorry for the word, but it is the truth.)

  • This is very true. I have 3 linux boxes, one with intel integrated, one with nvidia and one with ati... the ati is not the most hardware deprived but it definitely has the worst graphics performance.

  • I just found out that Wine stands for "Wine is Not an Emulator" lo xD

  • Yes, that only means that the Windowsgames under WINE work native with an own small Windowskompatible Kernel, that is not from Microsoft.

  • no way

  • i would game on my linux pc but whenever i install the driver for my graphics gard...the colors get screwed up...negative colors basically....so every time i have to uninstall it..i havnt screwed around with it too much so i might just have to do that

  • I think u tried to install ATi Drivers on Ubuntu 9.xx. Try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and u'll see that u can install the drivers and all will be ok.

  • HEY HEY HEY....ST.JIMMYPYRO!!!

Sorry...just wanted to get your attention! LOL! Say man, could you do a video trying to get Bioshock to work on Linux??? PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASE????

I so want to know if it'll play that game! Well...that game, this old PC game called XIII & Portal!!

Could you at least tell me if you think it's possible for these games to run well on Linux? Reply to this or send me a message! Keep up the great work - Linux is COOL!

  • Likely you could use wine buuuut. If you want you can seamlessly run windows INSIDE linux. And I mean on your taskbar you will simply see windows aps as a different colour. Perfect integration when you use vmware or the like to install windows on the same machine. Sure it isn't linux on its own but if you are looking into switching over it works fine.

  • at the end of the day tho this is still emulation as your using CPU just to translate system calls... i wouldnt call those games smooth either...

Its really a shame tho if linux had better driver support (dont get me wrong its come a long way but it still falls short imo) and game designer support for the platform id change in a second im a total advocate of free software and i work for a large software provider :P

i love open office and ubuntu but as for gaming sorry but its windows only

  • Windows only?

Pfff... stop being silly. Read the Wine wiki page, it's not and emulator, Linux is running the games, and MANY of them run damn well.

    :D

  • I must go with weedyapl, altough I'm typing this from a swell tune Ubuntu machine and I hardly log into win 7 anymore,I must say that wine is still an emulator,as it "translates" the windows API layer, and that's basically what an emulator does......Also have Ubuntu on my eeepc, but the lost performance from wine is a real killer that even nfs 6 won't run.....I can hardly feel it on my core2quad though

  • WINE itself is an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator :P

  • I know,but that's just a name....God knows the creators of wine don't wanna call it an emulator :))

  • You're wrong. An emulator would emulate the entire x86 cpu (opcodes, modes, mmu...), like the VICE emulator does for the Commodore 64. But Wine is only a way to load the windows executable (in PE format) in linux, then letting it work like a normal Linux app. The "translation" is only provide the correct DLLs patched in a way that if the Win app calls a DLL function (for ex. Open() ), the modded DLL would call the proper Linux function to get the operation done. I hope it's clear. :D

  • I wasn't comparing it to a playstation emulator or something, that EMULATES the cpu.......but the translation of the windows api is in itself a layer where it "emulates" and transforms windows commands so that they're understandable for linux.....that itself is a "stripped down" emulation, even though Wine never goes on imitating certain hardware,I can never find a better word for what it's doing

  • ooooook ;-)

  • man you don't know how wine works, you could say it 10 times but it does emulate too,if it doesn't emulate hardware it doesn't mean it's not emulating, the word, the fucking term is not limited to that

  • @StJimmyPyro

We know it, WINE implemant WIN API but it stiil take you CPU for translate system calls and OPEN GL rules to DirectX.

  • @StJimmyPyro nop

  • Wine doesnt emulate the games. It translates the windows language to Linux so that Ubuntu and other linux based OS's can play the games.

  • @weedyapl ok I hate to say it but windows games and other stuff isn't just for windows. YOu need to look around a little some of the time but you can play widows games like Crysis, Call of duty 4, Maplestory Flyff etc.

  • @weedyapl It's not an emulator.

  • @weedyapl it is not exactly emulation. to stay technically wine and cedega are API's for running exe compiled files on operating systems based on the linux kernel. it sure translates, but thats not the way emulation works. its just an interface for exe's

  • True gamer, dinner plate in front of the monitor, now your just missing the soda cans lol.

  • OK i'll start off with, i am a PC/WinXp user BUT i know my way around Linux.

    1. i have a ok computer (not even close to the best) But still ok.

    2. I can't say how Ubuntu works as i have never been able to get it working on a Pc (trusted me i have tryed many settings but the gfx looks like a Bad game like when you can't get a NES game to Load) and Yes i have installed and configed many drivers to try and get it working.

(this is going to be like 3 comments sorry..)

  • 3. i use DS:Linux for servers and it works very well for that.

    4. I have tryed maybe 60+ distros (Mandriva being the best out of all of them i have tryed)

    5. BUT when using Wine to play games like CS:S or WOW the FPS in the games would Drop so bad it would make the game un-playable

    Where

    windows on WOW gets 120FPS

    Linux+Wine gets 20FPS

I really don't think getting Ubuntu to work would help much But i'll never know as that just does not want to work for me.

  • 6. just starting the games would take about 2-5 mins (YEA mins)

    7. Not putting Linux down or anything, But i have never seen a linux play a game at Good FPS

    8. I would think a OS taken less from the CPU and Ram would run games faster =( i guess i was wrong on that one.

  • What graphics card do you have? You've never seen a game play in high FPS in Linux? I was getting very decent FPS in the videos I took.

It's Not that Linux is taking all your resources that's making games slower, it's most likely the fact that you don't have correct drivers installed and/or WINE is not configured correctly, sometimes you have to tweak things a little to get certain games to run better.

  • StJimmyPyro i have a 3.0ghz CPU Dual core 1g DDR2 ram 6800GS 256mb gfx card after watching this video i tryed one last time for about 6 hours last night and I have Good News and bad. I got WOW running at a OK FPS 60-70fps (very playable) BUT it's has some Glitching where is your walking your Feet stop moving (kind of funny at first but now just sucks =P) (PS.. i can't find any settings for Wine) but i did setup the .wtf file in wow to make it faster.
  • You can run winecfg in the terminal to do a little bit of configuration. Search your game/application on appdb.winehq(.)org for a lot of help on many glitches.

However, I did a google search (wow legs stop moving) and I saw one guy said after some patch the first time he logged in it did that, then didn't do it anymore after that. Maybe it's connected. Anyway, best of luck.

  • use opengl instead of directx?

True, windows is better for gaming, but I prefer the stability with some lower graphics. Warcraft 3 is crashing sometimes on windows, on debian stable, it never crashed.

  • i was having the same problems when i had IBM laptop with a budget intel vga, but linux need a true opengl vga card, i got a new HP with Nvidia 9200gs ,now linux runs games like breeze i got same fps in xplane under linux as i get in windows, i think u will get lower fps if u use Directx to render but if use opengl i think u will get better result. i run WOW , call of duty , unreal tournment, with very good fps under wine

  • this vid is from 2007

do u still use ubuntu 6.10?

just heard about this cedega, wanna try later

    nice vid dude..

  • No, I use 9.4 now haha.

And just as the version for Ubuntu has changed, my opinion on Cedega has also changed.|Use WINE.

  • right now I have ubuntu (linux) and right now I am trying it just to get used to it. and one day I will cross over to 100%ubuntu. and uumm sorry to ask but where do I get cedega.

  • Use WINE, it's free, and works better. It just lacks a nice GUI lol.

  • Which PlayOnLinux takes care of, and it's free. :)

  • only 1 gig of RAM? u should add another gig or 2

  • It's Linux, you don't need as much as you do with Windows :D

  • my pc is more old then yours......radeon 9550 But can run crysis warhead very well in low.......

  • isn't this basically just wine with a GUI?

  • Yes, only WINE has better support and more compatibility.

  • wine works for me, no need to pay for it...

  • the thing is that you don't have punkbuster for games like cod. so you are more exposed and people could figure out how to hack easily.

  • Punkbuster is a joke the hacks that it catches are just a fraction of the ones in use.

  • Those GTA issues are fixed now. There are no more glitches like that. NIce vid.

  • We just need more opengl based titles.

  • ;[ that case is butt ugly, pyro.

  • dudegotranoverongtasawhensnatchedoutofcar!

  • mac osx too

  • I have tried Wine for Linux and I must say that it runs quite alot Windows games. But it got some small stuttering when your fast on the buttons. Also Wine reduced my fps by more than 50% compared to the tweaked Windows XP Pro 90mb iso. Today I tried TrackMania in PlayonLinux using Wine, and while my fps was 20-30, i easly get 55-70 fps using the slimmed down Windows XP version. There are so much better harddrive support in Windows.

  • Use WineX, not just Wine. The program in this video is WineX/Cedega. Windows emulator made specifically for gaming.

  • question : how can i install programs on linux mandriva ? thanks :)

  • I would recommend checking out the Package Manager to see what it already has access to.

I've never used Mandriva, but I believe you can look for RPM files, they should practically auto install if they're anything like debian's bed files.

  • i have the 9800xt it's quite old man. but good i can run cod2 on it. portal. GTR2 Evo. half-life2. my RAM is 1.50GB and my GHz weird it is 1.10GHz. now is it 1.10GHz? or 1.1Ghz?

  • It is 1.1GHz. 1.10, 1.1000 or 1.1000000 whatever, are the same as 1.1. It doesn't matter how may "0" there are. It's the same as 0001.1 and 1.1.

  • oh lol yeah. yeah i got the new HD4850 i got a e8400 OCed @ 3.60ghz

  • well, it runs like 75% of games out there! i think it's good enough (and crysis sucks anyway) and there are many good linux games anyway (alien-arena, urban terror...etc)

  • crysis is so boring

  • nah

    it's got some good parts

    warhead is def better

  • Doesnt cedega cost money? Cedega doesnt run every game, for example, crysis.

  • No, it doesn't run Crysis, use WINE, it's more likely to support it well in the near future.

  • just saw a video (think it was yours) and it was Crysis running on linux, abit buggy though, and i dont think it had directx 10.

Its a real shame. If Microsoft allowed DirectX to work on all platforms, developers might consider to release their games for linux. But for now, most prefer DirectX and dont wish to use OpenGL.

  • just wondering, why you dont use WINE for everything?

  • I do now.

Cedega used to be somewhat better for games then WINE though.

  • Cedega was always easier setting up different wine environments for different games. Has someone released a good manager for wine to do the same or is Cedega always going to be easier to customize those kind of things. Also how is crossover doing? "Crossover helps put code into wine." I don't mind paying cedega $5/month i have been for the longest time. If crossover was as easy to donate to I might switch. But I like competition it is good for business.

  • Lol, I only have 512MB of RAM.

Shitty graphic card that it came with.

I lag like fuck, and my FPS is always shit.

    (WoW)

  • I think cedega forked from the wine project too early. Wine's dev build has alot better support for games in my experience, and cedega has a restrictive license. I think if something were to fork off of wine at it's current state, and try to have better support for games, It'd actually make linux somewhat of a gaming platform.

  • when you install linux are your old files still on the computer

  • No, not unless you dual boot, then you'll have your current OS with all your files, and have the option to boot into Linux with none of your files.

  • if i am using wubi to install ubuntu that is a dual boot right?

  • Yes, that will work.

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=tjJl3p0-YMs

That should be a good guide if you're using xp or vista.

  • too late its installed and i love it but how would i increase the screen resolution its stuck at 800X600

  • Get "envy" and use it to install your graphics driver for your card.

  • how do i do that

  • Google search "envy" and it's the first result, get the correct download for your version of linux, then run it and select your graphics card, then it will install the drivers and you will be able to run in max resolution.

  • mines a built in how do i know which one it is

  • Several ways, look up the model of your computer if you bought it, or you can look up your mother board.

You can also try typing this in the terminal

    lspci

and near the top it should say what you have, you can pm me the full results if you're not sure.

Envy might also have a "auto select" feature, though I'm not sure.

  • I'm totally interested in going this route and starting gaming on my new rig which is pretty high end, but I want to know: if i do everything right will there still be lower frame rates? and how does Ubuntu respond to DirectX 10 stuff (like Crysis)?

  • Honestly, at least for the next little while, you're gonna want to go with xp or vista for gaming, at least if you want the best results with the newest games.

I hear you can get hacked versions of DX10 for xp and it will also work in linux with WINE. But Cedega is no longer worth using, as no one is really updating it anymore.

  • no need to get cedega if you want to run DX games, get wine, and wine doors, open wine doors and select direct x 9 from the list and install it from there - easier than the download from MS.

  • cedega is free? for the moment i use wine :)

  • No, cedega is not free, and I no longer recommend it.

  • i use wine right now, so i can only play opengl games. so im gonna get cedega.

but i got a few questions.

is the interface like wine, with virtual desktop?

and how hard is it to install?

  • Very easy to install, very nice and easy to use GUI.

  • i installed it but idk how to run games. i tell it the setup file on the cd and the directory i want it but when i tell it to install nothing happens. can u help

and btw i am a noob in linux :P

  • It's been a while since I used it, but as I recall you find the setup file on the cd, and install.... what game are you trying to install?

Because honestly, it's been a while since they did a update, so if the game is newer then 1 year old, you might want to try wine, as it's updated almost monthly.

  • its counter-strike source, i found the setup file and did everything like tutorials online said, but when i click to install nothing happens.

i cant get any game that runs on direct x to run on wine :( but opengl and direct3d games run perfectly.

    thats y i got cedega.

im gonna do some tweaking tonight, hopefully ill get it to work

guess ill stick to counter-strike 1.6 on wine.

    thanks alot :)

  • Alright, sounds fair, sorry I couldn't be more helpful

  • it alright :)

at least u got it to work :P

  • hey i have a radeon 2600xt and whenever i try to install me drivers it doesnt let me have permission and when i get permission it installs ok but the messes up my graphics altogether...any ideas?

  • Did you try using envy to install it?

  • No whats that?

  • you could have made a search on google. You don't have the permissions because you must use the root account... So you have the rights. you can give permissions to let the driver installation because preceding the command with the word "sudo"... If sudo isn't recognize try "su". Then you'll have to enter the root account password...

  • Turn off Framerate Limiter in GTA - no lag!

  • Good idea =D

  • where can i download cedega for free?

  • warez-bb

  • You shouldn't "steal" it. Rather get Wine, cedega was built from earlier version of wine any way. (my explanation is simplified obviously)

  • yeah I agree with Gummi. Wine is better since it's completely open-source and you can apply patches to get certain games to work

  • Yeah, i almost said it before, I'd suggest WINE, its 100% free, open source and it has advanced quite a bit lately, its planned to reach version 1.0 in a little over a month. I'd suggest grabbing teh latest WINE, then picking up the 'winetricks' script, and then installing DirectX ontop of all that. i just figured it'd be best if i didnt mention my hate disgust and detest for Cedega here :)... since they found a loophole and raped opensource software.

  • Yeah, I'm not saying their company has good practices, but at the time I made the video, it was easier and faster to use Cedega for some games (and they even ran better). But yes, when wine 1.0 comes out, it should pretty much have Cedega blown out of the water, since they haven't been developing it much in the past while. I think one thing I liked at the time of filming was also the nice GUI. When I get back into Linux and install Ubuntu 8.4, I will be making more gaming videos, using wine.

  • use wine.

It is nearly so good like cedega. Some things even better than cedega.

    (Alsa support for example)

  • not really the new version runs supports alsa aswell and cedega is pretty much faster im talking out of experience

  • Ok, now I'm certain Linux is no-where the same as windows when it comes to gaming, I'm a Linux fan but Linux is not better than windows for gaming and media..or internet except for the fact you get virus immunity. I mean it doesn't even support shockwave which is on many modern sites nowadays. Linux is definitely not for a rich gaming experience. But if you can survive bad gaming, media and added complexity, you should enjoy the many benefits of Linux.

  • Well... that feels like a back handed comment...

Point is, people say "You can't play ANY games in linux"

Here I played 4, and it wasn't bad quality gaming.

  • And then there are multiplatform games with linux binaries, Doom (series), Quake (series), Nexuiz, Unreal Tournament(series), Urban Terror, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Descent(series), Duke Nukem 3D,Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Heretic(series), Sim City3K, Neverwinter Nights, and the list of enjoyable opensource and linux only games is even longer, i could literally go on for a week.

  • And then we have loads of console emulators.

When i started using linux there werent alot of games, but nowadays if someone tells you they dont use linux because there aren't enough games, it is little more than an excuse. Granted there still are alot of games for windows that won't run or won't run very well on linux.

  • Yes, I have played nearly all of those games mentioned, but some people don't want substitutes, they want to play COD4, or they want to play WOW, and now you can do that in Linux, so it's beginning to be a loosing battle for windows.

  • Maybe, yes I Kind of said a few things in one, another aspect would be native games for linux, especially lately they have been prospering quite a lot but mainly in the fps region. I dont know any good racing /sports games. again i'm just throwing out facts..

  • Haha, I stumbledupon this!

But I'm not going to watch it again...

  • Fine... but my videos are like...

SwissChalet chicken, better the second time around!

  • What?!? Anyway good vid get the word out!

  • do you have windows as well? is the performance of games in windows better?

  • I have windows, but on a another computer, and I can say in most games I don't notice a difference. I might dual boot one of them some time to do a proper comparison.

  • Good idea to dual boot linux and windows. perfect combo:P

  • For me works fine, good job!

  • wow dude that looks like crap. sorry but it really does

  • see me comment to the last guy.

  • fuck man your fps looks extractively low what are you getting on those games?

  • Well, I had a middle class last generation graphics card, running what at that time was a brand new game. Of course it's not perfect, but if I threw a 8600 in there then I wouldn't expect to see any lag. Also I encoded the video HORRIBLY, so that would add to it looking bad. I'm going to attempt to run CounterStrike and Call of Duty 4 (yes, I just want to push it)

Oh, also remember, It could get better, I had all the settings on max, so if I put them down a bit you could expect a 20-30 fps gain

  • tushay salesmen I two have a uncle.

  • Haha

  • you suck

  • yeah, that'd be me.

    Small world.

    What's your nick?

  • Saw me where? I haven't been able to get it to work on linux, as of yet, but it does work fine and dandy on xp :P

  • I wonder if this guy has the 9800 Pro or XT, because their different cards. I had the 9800 Pro which was a really great card, but the linux drivers were less than desirable.

No I'm soon to put open SuSE 10.3 On my laptop (Dual 7950 GTX's should make beryl look awesome)

  • Yeah, sorry, I don't know what I was saying when I said XT PRO... it's only the pro.

  • nice man, this really makes me want to setup either wine or cedaga on my laptop. I'm a gamer so I might ask for a bit of help when I get around to it.

  • NO problem, I'll be here, just message me.

  • low fps ^^ and too problems

  • cedega is pay :S where is free software

  • pay once yes... There's WINE, it can run some things just as good, but Cedega is more for gaming. If you're going to buy games, then you can atleast buy something to play it (since you have 100+ dollars laying around from not buys a M$ OS) Still, WINE does work well for a lot of stuff, and growing bi monthly.

  • I find it funny when people say they can't go to linux, because they are a gamer, since I switched to linux to get more fps in quake 3...

  • will it run games such as flyff, gunz, etc.

  • As far as I can find (because I've never heard of those games) they are not yet compatible with Cedega. I'm sure you could find some Linux based games like them though (for example, my friends little brother found a free WoW simulator for Linux, and a StarCraft clone, all 100% free to)

  • How did you get the ati drivers working i have AMD x2 3800+ @ 2.5GHz 1 gig ocz platnim and ATI X1650XT [RV5300LE] with XGL but i get a black screen with propitery drivers 34, 35, 40, 41, 42 but it still not work please pm me on reply and in here if u like

  • What version of Ubuntu (or other Linux os) are you running? The easiest way would be with envy, have you tried it? albertomilone(dot)com

Try that first, but what I did I jotted down here ubuntucorner(dot)freeforums(dot)org/viewtopic(dot)php?t=51

  • Are you playing with the keyboard? Or are you using a controller?

  • Keyboard, but there is controller support.

  • Cool. Thx for the info.

  • my spec is Intel(R) Pentium(R)Dual Core @ 3.2GHz 1021MB 32Bit 18'inc screen 1280x1024 resolution EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8800 Ultra 768MB....ur nfs carbon and gta sa not running a bit smooth mines running great and smooth...hell yeah...

  • Yeah, your specs blow mine out of the water. I wouldn't expect my games to run any better on windows.

It's good enough for anyone to play, and I don't really notice much lag, plust like I said, alll the visuals are cranked max.
