  • Hitler also invented the design for the VW Bettle.

  • Guys quit the hatred. Adolf Hitler was a talented artist. Although he was rejected by the Vienna Arts College, the instructor encouraged him to apply to Architecture. Unfortunately, Hitler never applied to Architecture and came to believe that the Jews had corrupted German art fueling his anti-semitism.

  • This was an amazing movie.Hitler was a mediocre artist at best and resented the Jewish ppl because so many our genius's in art, film, and business.

The Holocaust was a result of envy by the german ppl against the Jews.

    Jewish ppl are truly blessed.

  • @MrFredGoldstein What about Catholic people?........

  • @r0sebud100 Catholicism is not a geneology.Jewish ppl are, although, one can convert to Judaism and practice our religion.

  • @MrFredGoldstein Thank you.And of course vice versa.Take care and live long.

  • @r0sebud100 Bless you and the children of Israel my friend !

  • why have i never seen this movie... i will have to go out and buy it ... i trully love his work shame he has never won an oscar x

  • Hitler somehow deep inside him blamed the jews for his failure to become a career artist......so he instead made the Gestapo steal all the valuable art......to compensate....his loss.

  • Why is this film so hidden away, this is the only reference on Youtube

  • @Harryaitch The Jews that run our media and Hollywood don't want people to see Hitler as a normal person, only as a power hungry & murderous leader.

  • hi

  • What sucks is I was watching this for free on MAX for the weekend and halfway through the movie my 'free trial' expired! Noooooo!!! lol So i never saw the end of it. :(

  • Looks like an awesome idea, I'll check it out, see if it delivers.

  • "I know what it looked like, but how did it FEEL...?"

Great fucking line, great fucking film. One of my faves.

  • Well John Cusack's accent is too american, it should have been sort of German like Noah taylor's accent.

  • @rhummayuna If I recall correctly, his character was born in America.

  • i love john cusack movies!! xoxoxoxo he's AWESOME!!

  • @SirJ4ck: here you are: iplex.pl/vod/p1899-przyjaciel_hitlera.html

  • what a good movie. Cusack was amazing in it.

  • Cant't find this movie anywhere

  • There's another really good movie like this one called "Good" starring Viggo Mortensen.

  • if only he got accepted into art school

  • @UltraCriterion If only people had bought his art.

  • @UltraCriterion

if only germany had a proper economy and if only he had a proper childhood

  • @UltraCriterion

I think you would find "The Alternative Hypothesis" of Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt quite interesting. It is a great novel after all!

  • his paintings were crap

  • When I think about the subject of Hitler, I'm reminded of a quote by Bill Hader, "How does a guy like that have fans? Here, we got this old racist drug addict but don't worry he mean and fat!"

    \

  • "I am the new avant guarde! I am the new artist, practicing the new art...And politics, IS THE NEW ART!"

Liked this movie, historical hiccups aside, thats to be expected in a non-documentary expressionist movie. Shit, even some docs screw up the facts!

  • Not bad of a movie, but a little inaccurate historically.

Hitler was a bonafide militarist after the war ended. A career in art for him was out of the question by then.

The big 'what if' regarding Hitler's life is probably his entry examination to that Vienna arts academy (I forget the exact name).

Set in that time of Hitler's life, I think this movie could have really produced some mega punches

  • well, you know the genre is 'historical fiction' which gives a considerable freedom to the writer...

  • JohnEstaque, my dad did the screenplay as well actually, directors often do that

  • joshg12332, hitler ordered him 2 b killed and he was beaten 2 death by a plank of wood. I know because my dad directed the movie.

  • you know, the interpretation of yours is too far from mine. but i am not saying your wrong and mine is correct for there's nothing wrong nor even right in an opinion.

In my own opinion... it is that ... max, hitler's friend, is setted-up to be killed in order not to meet hitler and that would make the latter be convinced to join the military and to abandon art. ;)

    Must be politics.

  • and other thing. I think there's a loophole in your statement. It is not the director who actually make the story but the scriptwriter itself. The director is only the one who directs on how the writen script be perceived on the screen. ;)

In that way, im sorry but i doubt your statement of your father being a director. :(

  • So Max or John Cusack's character actually existed?

  • hitler came back from the 1st world war and wanted to be an artist, max was an art dealer, when hitler came to power he had him killed

  • no, hitler did not have him killed. some other germans on hitlers side almost killed him, but hitler was max's friend. max was meeting

  • thank you. I watched the trailer. Now I know the whole story and the ending.

  • i agree with you.

I think the hitler we knew is very much different from the hitler in the story.

here, in this story... it suggests that hitler join the military because of some heavy reasons.

  • Could you please provide me with a link to a page with these photos? I must say that I've never seen a picture of something that was a) unmistakably a gas chamber (and not a shower/delousing chamber/etc.) and b) not a reconstruction.

  • Hitler was listened to by the germans because he had speaking skills that were out of this world.

  • wauw... everyone is fighting over here. Ehh... I'll just keep it on fantastic movie!!

  • it was a great movie, one of my top 5's...but you cant say anything without someone wanting to fight and/or argue. Things aren't appreciated for simply being what they are.

  • Then he become something more than a man,a symbol, a God.The German citizens just gave him ultimate power on everything. They saw that he did good with the economy and strength so they followed him without question to everything he did. That was the problem. That's why we need Democracy.Well ofcourse history repeats its self.Just see the U.S. these days.Bombing and killing inocent people thoughout the world and none says anyhting for that.Isn't that fascism?

  • ummm....actually young man from Greece, it is you who could benefit from studying history much more acurately. You speak in broad generalities which is alright, but specifics best serves serious historical discussion...that is if YOU'RE serious!

  • "Then he become something more than a man,a symbol, a God." Very true, It's dangerous when a politician becomes something more than politician & somewhat of a demigod...eg Barack Obama.

  • You people are pathetic!!You shouldn't just read history, you should study history!!Do you think that Hitler just woke up on day and took over the goverment in Germany and started killing jews? No!!The people of Germany supported Hitler and brought him to power.Germany was really fucked up back then. They needed someone strong and intelligent to take over the situation. The problem is not that he become Furher, cause that was really good for the people of Germany, but what happened next.

  • I don't need history lessons from someone who can't even put a sentence together. Why is it that racism and illiteracy seem to go hand in hand?

  • Hey,I'm very racist,and I can rite just fine.You're wrong man.Aint you bein an anti-litrate?

  • please tell me that was a joke

  • yes,it was most definitely me being a smart ass

  • For 'DaRiceKing'..."Hitler was a man walking on a thin line.'

Goebbels did a good job on you.

Just take your bloody fuhrer portrait off the wall and stop talking shit.

  • p1rateferl1fe wrote: [Noah Taylor's fantastic as Hitler (Thats a complement, I think),John Cusack is one of my favorite actors.] Ok, it's a compLiment 2Noah. I dare say he woN't be swamped with role offers inHolywood (unlike Sylvester Stallone, StevenSegal&other MACHO actors 4weak men/audiences).UNlike brit slag women, I stayed in last night2 watchMAX. I didN't go boozing on cheap beer+vodka or look4oral/Anal sex in public, in the city centre withBLUE-Collar lads UNdeterred by WCs=britGirls

  • Noah Taylor is fantastic as Hitler (Thats a complement, I think...) and John Cusack is one of my favorite actors.

Until I saw this movie, I thought it was impossible to romantisize Hitler. But, damn. If he hadnt gone batshit crazy and killed 6 million Jews...

But, some of his painting were... okay. Not great, but not bad.

  • If you look at Hitler's artistic work, it's quite clear what field one of his natural skills was in - architectural design. He had some difficulty drawing people, and a lot of his efforts look quite amateurish (I found the portrait of Max in the movie funny, because there was no way he could have produced a picture like that). But his paintings of buildings were very good - yet not in the style of a fine artist, but in that of a natural architect.

  • This really is my favorite movie. After I watched this for the first time a few years back, my whole view on art, Hitler, many things changed, and for the better.

Noah Taylor did an amazing performance and Adolf Hitler, he truly portrayed him as a human unlike most.

  • No single musuem keeps his art on permanent display because it would invite attacks. Most of Hitler's surviving drawings and paintings are privately owned. If you Google "Hitler's Paintings" you'll see most of them. They are, by the way, nothing like what you see in the fictional movie "Max."

  • 'Hitler was a man walking on a thin line'.

Dude, he launched world war two and initiated the holocaust. Hitler certainly achieved great power...but he orded some despicable acts to be carried out with this power. Perhaps you think Hitler was a 'great man' because he had great power. I, for one, am not a person who uses jibberish philosophy to excuse the grotesque and deplorable acts committed by a war criminal. Because Hitler achieved great power doesn't not mean he was a 'great man'.

    I

  • lets say give me a man that could raise a country of 70 percent jobless people into a super powers,,without him germany wouldnt even exist, did you know how poor germany is before hitlers leadership?lets say all people got bad and good sides but sometimes good sides is forgotten even if you make one mistake, all of the good things you did will be forgotten, hell stalin killed more man than him,but you know history and books are written by the victors, thats why u.s is in collapse

  • sure...Hitler made 'one' mistake. You're nothing but a nazi sympathizer. Seig Heil....moron.

  • and your muthafuckin bitch, what?you wanna meet?ill kick your ass you fuckin shit,228 bartlett illinois, ill be wating for yo ass you fuckin bitch

  • '228 bartlett illnois, ill'. Thanks for the tip off. Don't be surprised to find your house up in flames in the near future

  • why dont you see me face to face mah nigga!!your scared?fuckin crackhead

  • True, Germany was suffering under the Treaty of Versailles, but instead of addressing those problems, Hitler just blamed the Jews and started a war (which almost always enriches a country.)

P.S. I don't think the Holocaust qualifiies as a mere "one mistake".

  • Yeah,its a mistake. Listen to what they're saying..."ve cooked 6 million juden...oooops !"

  • Actually, anti-Jewish sentiment not just in Germany, but in Europe had been surfacing and resurfacing time and again. There already existed Aryan philosophers who preached and wrote anti-semitic literature, some of which Hitler read. And as always in post-war, depression-era countries...people will always find someone to blame for their woes. Let's also remember that higher education in Europe prior to the mid-to-late 50 served very few!

  • I fail to see how Hitler was a great man. He blew his his own brains out in a room under the ground...and forced millions of fellow countrymen to do his own ideological bidding on the battlefield and get killed in the process. Hitler also brought armageddon to Germany. How does this make Hitler a great man? Did he win or lose the war?

  • Noah Taylor is just breathtaking in this as usual and John Cusack, he just keeps getting better doesn't he? By the way, after the concentration camps were liberated, the allies went around to surrounding villages and herded the free villagers through the camps to see what they refused to see during the war. How many people in the world, still today have that kind of punishment coming? Art does not inoculate evil... the viewer does, especially if they refuse to see.

  • Actually the allies made few surrounding German villagers witness the aftermath of the concentration camps. Bergen-Belsan comes to mind.

  • This was one of my favourite films. Really I love any sort of film to do with the Second World War as the concept was a harsh yet interesting one - it showed us what man was really capable of and how far they could take both genocide and Racism.

I just LOVED this movie and I am dieing to watch it again. I know its semi-historical, but I love how the writers filled in the blanks using their own perception.

    Amazing film.

  • Does anyone know where I can find this video online? Thanks.

  • There aren't any photographs that aren't "recreations" of the gas chambers.

  • You think all those Holocaust survivors are plotting against you and lying about the gas chambers? Or are they all lying independently? Isn't that a little bit paranoid?

  • I'm not the kind that's going to sit there and tell everyone that there's a huge conspiracy. That's retarded.

But there are inconsistencies that deserve notice.

  • Photographs? Please show us! I have yet to see one in my year of research on the matter - that is not blatantly a shower or is even understandable. I haven't seen one shred of absolute evidence.

  • Your limiting the freedom of speech. If you censor people, they'll begin to wonder why they're being censored and in all likelyhood will look at the good parts of National Socialism to justify and criticize why they're being silenced... Clearly you don't believe in Freedom of Speech. Guess what? Neither did Hitler. You can't just shut down sites because you don't like what they have to say. I could call anything a hate site. I could call an pro-israel site a hate site b/c it oppresses palestine

  • We don't have small chinese children making our clothes for us for 5 cents an hour? Seems an awful lot like slave labor. Not to mention there were no gas chambers in the Holocaust. There's absolutely no proof of them what-so-ever.

  • Well when you compare it to modern things going on, its not so horrific.

  • He clearly had a world vision which he carried out. What more could you ask of a brilliant man? He inspired millions upon millions of people and shaped the modern world as we know it! He was a fucking vagabond in Austria! Living in the Gutters and he ended up ruling Continental Europe. You've clearly never read Mein Kampf because while I'll admit that it was unreadable at points (he was in prision during much of its writing) it has some quotes which will give you goosebumps if you think about it

  • What does his abilities as a student have anything to do with his intelligence? Some of the stupidest people I know get good grades, that's a horrific point. You can't ignore the horrible things he did but you can't ignore the brilliance he had within him either. To do either of those is to do injustice to the truth. The truth is, he was an outstanding writer, making some of the greatest quotes I've ever read - he was an astounding speaker and could captivate a crowd...that's brilliance.

  • You don't. You can't. If you do, you'll only accelerate the rate at which the next Hitler will come.

  • Wow. You have got to be one of the most retarded people I've ever had the misfortune of listening to. Say what you want about him. I for one think he was immoral and wrong. But he was *anything* from "not very intelligent". If you know anything about Hitler, you'd know he was one of the most brilliant men to ever walk this earth.

  • I agree. Even though I'm all for freedom of speech and freedom of information, those Nazi websites can be dangerous for young and impressionable minds. As many wannabe Nazis and fascists as we have in some Western governments already I don't want any more people like them rising to power and having a heavy influence in politics. The world doesn't need another "revolution" like that one in these uncertain times.

  • The Nazis also killed six million Rroma (Gypsies), blacks, Slavs, unionists, socialists, communists, anarchists, liberals, feminists, Jehovah's Witnesses, pacifists, mentally challenged people and disabled people.

Pretty much anyone who wasn't a Fascist (far right-wing ideology bent on the merger of corporate power, state power and chauvanistic nationalism), anyone who wasn't an "Aryan German" or anyone deemed "unfit" physically or mentally to live in the 'new world'.

  • Exactley. This trailer promises so much & promotes 'max' as a movie that it's not. I'm glad i saw the movie before the trailer, or else i would have been very disappointed. Whoever made/directed the trailer should have directed the movie

  • holy crap, i wanna see this. :D where can i find it?

  • austlid87; that's enough. History is written by those who observe it, learn from it and have experienced it. It's not written by the 'victors' (this a cheap claim used by neo-nazis which aims to remove a portion of guilt from hitler & the rest of his mass murderers). Hitler was a despicable person & I hate everthing that the bastard stood for. He regarded state & ideology as more valuable than life & humanity. Not a man to be admired at all...though some people do admire the power he wielded.

  • i can't find a torrent anywhere !

  • Making hitler a human does not make him symapthetic; it makes him more of a monster. The sane are more responsible for their actions than the insane.

  • Hitler did make some money painting picture-postcards, but there was little work for commercial artists in Germany at the time. Pre-WWII Germany had some great artists like Max Beckman and George Gross (featured in the movie) but they didn't make any money.

  • Adolph Hitler is the most debated and misunderstood character in history, but also the one that sociologists and psychiatrists least want to study. I've met writers who're uneasy about studying the workings of his mind, afraid to humanize a person this evil.

MAX tries to make him three-dimensional; an unhappy loner who can't make friends.

He may have had Asperger's Syndrome, which explains his bizarre habits and social isolation.

  • I wonder why there is so little study of far more successful and ruthless murderers such as Stalin and Mao? What was Stalins pathology?

  • jup i can somehow follow your thoughts, but on the other hand. To me Hitler has some mystery around him. Something I don't feel when I think of Stalin or Mao (the last I now not mucht about).

Stalin was of course ruthless but somehow I feel like I have less problems understanding the possible motives for Stalin murdering so much people, compared to Hitler. Stalin ruled with fear. But a large part of Germany and also people from other countries supported Hitler in free will back then. Scary...

  • Because they didnt kill jews. That's why nobody cares about them.

  • one of the best films. Wether it had alot of views or not its still a brilliant little gem. Of course sometimes you need to humanize monsters to find out why n therefore spot it next time maybe. 2 b honest humanizin Hitler is about the only logical thing u can do. He didnt come out of the womb with genocide on his mind. Mein Kampf answers alot of his behavior wiv subtle clues due 2footnotes. Besides the humanizing topic I really love the art and philosophy in the films. Really intelligent film.

  • I like the idea of this movie, but it could be performed better.

  • sorry hon, but your standards must REALLY be high if you're reaching for better than John Cusack.

  • I'm not talking specifically about John Cusack. I talk about the movie in general.

  • Max Rothman is fictional but i would recommend it, it is a good movie.

  • Where can I get this film on DVD?.. or where can I download this?.. I really wanna see this movie.

  • You might be disappointed...it wasn't what i was expecting. You might be expecting the same movie i was.

  • It is loosely based fiction. It is doubtful a person named Max Rothman mentored Adolph Hitler, however it is well know fact that Hitler was obsessed by the arts. Sometimes Christies and others will auction an original Hitler artwork for a few hundred thousand dollars. Maybe if I get really rich I will buy one and burn it.

  • Actually, Hitler did have an art agent called Rothman. He was just a crap artist - good technically, but lacking in any kind of soul.

  • I don't think people like Hitler should be humanized. He was a monster who murdered millions of innocent people. You think that kind of a person deserves to be humanized? I don't.

  • There was a real human there once upon a time.

  • The fact that he killed millions of people is the reason why he needs to be humanized. Remember that he was a man who put forth the machinery of murder upon millions. From that we can learn about ourselves and our capability of committing the same thing had we taken the same course. We need to humanize Hitler to better understand ourselves.

  • Well said. It's also important to remember to be vigilant for similar people. The real monsters are not so obvious and can't be spotted so easily.

  • well said

  • You can almost feel the evil from this movie.

  • You know, one could easily draw the obvious conclusion that the movie blames Hitler for the inadvertent murder of the one man who might've altered his entire future for the better. Yet upon further examination, if you'll recall the scene where Max asks his wife if he'll see her later and she says nothing, but conveys a slightly devious grin while bending in some ballet movement, it certainly leaves room for suspicion. "Hell hath no fury...

  • Great film and one of the most effective, subtle, haunting trailers I've ever seen. Shivers up my spine....

  • Noah Taylor so makes this film. His performance, and the film in general, should've gotten a lot more notice.

  • A lot more could've been done with this film...but i think the producers of this movie have hit on a topic that movie makers will use for many years to come in the future....how did hitler rise to power the way he did, why didn't people stop him, how he was as a person in his youth, what can be done to stop people like him in the future...etc.

  • "I've seen the future. Believe me, it came straight at us."

    Incredibly creepy, underrated film.

  • a bit under done...if u get what i mean

  • This was an amazing movie.
