When you make your weapons don't try to make them out of one object break it down into separate primitive shapes and then move verts around make it look good and then attach all the objects together.

@dagr8master thats because your not extruding lines, your extruding the vertices themselves. To extrude lines you have to select all the vertices in the line, or use the line select mode like this guy was doing during his modeling.

I've started using Blender, because I have terrible RAM, I'd say if you can use 3ds to make good model, go for it, but if you are animating, 3ds Max is much better and less cluttered.

after u model it in blender, i would put it into bryce and make a bump map and use that same texture and go to "object top" for the texture maping, this should make an actually 3D image of the texture, like all the little bumps buttons and cylinders thats on the gun, i will upload some of my creations so u can see them
