Seen them a couple of weeks ago in Belfast.

Fucking unbelievable, Macgowan's screech in fall from grace still sounds haunting, as does the abrasive growling of this (which was a bit of a pleasant surprise)

That coupled with the ballads, Kitty, Lullaby of London, Rainy night in Soho and, of course, Fairytale (ably supported by Ella Finer) left me in no doubt that Shane is far from over, along with the rest of the band, who looked as lively as ever. (esp, James Fearnley)

So to summarise, Macgowan in the late 80's early-mid 90's was a heroin-addicted, alcoholic mess.

But after several stints in rehab, he beat his real problem, the drugs, not alcohol, and the pogues reunion is breathtakingly spectacular, not least Fiesta, which is (as a friend of mine put it) a crowd of auld men wreckin about a stage like teenagers.
