  • When I saw then in Liverpool they opened up with Sons Of Pioneers. I don't think Japan will ever be equalled.

  • Every single member of Japan are simply showing off in this instrumental. An absolute masterpiece which will never be equalled.

  • incredible

  • saw them at the odeon in brum always remember this as the opening piece,,Rip mick karn thx for the memories of a great concert

  • I would be spooked if I saw this concert LIVE. All seems a bit unusual.

  • Wow! That's it, just Wow. Been listening to Oil On Canvas this afternoon and replaying Canton over and over. I knew Mick was ill but didn't know his fight was over until now. Very sad now.

  • you younger fellows cant know, but there was a time when China was under total comunist dictatorship, everybody dressed blue garment and was poor but devote to Mao tse tung. it All changed in my livetime, and i m not so old. i would never believed it.

  • MUSIK LIKE A WORLD WHIT MUCH COLOR IN YELLOW!

  • good times.....makes me think of my happy teen days .....worshipping Japan an other quality 80's bands....still going gooey thinking bout dave Silvian...!!!!!!!

  • Some scenes of the video taken in Hong Kong streets disappeared many years ago. Now i have a chance to recall these disappeared street views.

  • So sorry to hear of the death of Mick...RIP

  • I was in their concert in 1982, Dec 4, in Hong Kong. simiply unforgettable.

  • MICK KARN JULY 24TH 1958-JANUARY 4TH 2011 REQUIESCAT IN PACE (MAY HE REST IN PEACE)

  • Live version even better than the studio version. As is Visions of China

  • I know Sylvian was voted the most beautiful man alive at about this time but for me Mick Karn was the coolest fucker alive with that dangly earing etc......RIP Mick.

  • RIP Mick

  • R.I.P. Mick Karn.

  • Its common japanese ceremonial music, with some electro pop added...still sounds good.

  • Its common japanese ceremonial music, with some electro pop added...

  • the mega drums in this + tin drum were well ahead of their time

  • OMG , iam in love with Mick Karns bass lines

  • GOOSEBUMPS! JAPAN I LOVE U!

  • Isn't it Masami Tsuchiya playing the tambourine ???

  • @dayad75 It is. He joined them on guitar for the final tour. I wish I'd seen it. I wish I could find a copy of 'Radio Fantasy' for a reasonable amount of money....

  • drum n' bass!

  • Such a shame that Sylvian was a total megalomaniac. It makes me wonder what this band could have achieved musically if he'd realised or cared for the other musicians.

  • Japan= true quality and elegance

  • i have just read the awful news about what is happening to mick..

i have been on his web page and read that there is an extensive treatmant plan being put into place...i really hope and p[ray that things happen well for you mick...

one of the great bass men and certainly onr of the great bassmen fromone of the great bands from the 80's.....we wish you well

  • My thoughts and prayers for Mick and his family and friends. The world will be a tad grey without him.

  • Anyone who is aware of Mick Karns illness please go to his website and donate, frankly it isnt looking good at all and he and his family needs all the help it can get. Please go to mickkarn.net.

  • I just read that Mick Karn has been diagnosed with advanced cancer, and rushed over to YouTube to find a video of CANTON, to listen to it and see Mick playing in the song that captivated me beyond measure when i first heard it, way back in the Eighties, and made me a devoted fan of Mick's from second one.

I own INSTANT PICTURES on VHS tape, but the copy is old and is barely playable anymore. So thank you heaps, for having uploaded this song ...

For news on Mick, check out MickKarn(dot)net

  • man i've got the dvd an everything, and i was first in the queue at the shop when the vhs came out. i saw them at the apollo in '82. but to this day i find this tune in particular utterly baffling, evocative, strange and majestic. the best english band since the beatles X

  • Mick Karn is just flat-out ungodly...just an amazing player. As good as Pino Palladino is, he can't carry Karn's equipment. It really breaks my heart that these guys never made it huge in America...I play Japan for my friends and they say it sounds like Duran Duran. I love Duran as well, but it's a total (*facepalm*) moment, y'know?

  • @SGBassplayer i agree. the bbc are currently doing some sort of early 80's nostalgia thing, and i've watched every minute in the vain hope of some recognition of japan's influence. guess what? nada. but maybe that's why they remain so special, i.e. that only we realise their greatness.

  • @hub1971 ditto

  • @hub1971 I know exactly what you mean...few days a go i looked into the book of roling stone magazine "500 best rock albums" and went through all the book in search of my favorite albums of my favorite bands...I could not find anything from bands like Japan and King crimson (two of my most favorite)...so disapointing, but like you said this is how we realise their geatness.

  • Its really too good.Seen them twice and both times the gigs sold out, many people are in the know.

  • jesus. what a band. i want to pick out mick karn, but the truth is they all fuckin' rock!

  • microtonal music WOW

  • Mick Karn is GOD. Period. *.*

  • Jesus, the bass......

  • Mick Karn is a creature on his own with that fretless bass work. I always said if David Bowie and Brian Eno had a son, it would be David Sylvian. Thanks for posting this fragant work.

  • WOW ok WOW

  • Sylvian said in an interview he and Richard Barbieri had spent long hours devising the synth sounds on Tin Drum, to get a personal sonic style that fit the record. That effort sure tells!

  • the views on this are waaaay too low'''

    learn here.

  • thanks for the post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the bass is incredible

  • wow the bass!!!

  • @chupapop Fretless bass.

  • Fucking instrumental masterpiece. Love this song... THX !!! :D

  • @OILERGEORGE well said!

  • Absolute...

  • Awesome Quality and song

    good job :D

  • Nothing peculiar about it....thanks for posting this.

  • I mean only they can do this sound pretty well, ok?! ;)

  • Yup,couldn't agree more..cheers.

  • @biladd dude i've been playing fretless bass for 25 years ,and i've still no idea how karn does this!

  • @hub1971

Let´s try something?!?!?! I play keyboard since 93! Well... I try hard! :P

  • @biladd dude i'm afraid i would embarass myself. my taste exceeds my skill. you know i met the great man once?

  • @biladd would love to talk japan and maybe swap music ideas. i'm not all that good though.

  • @hub1971

The guy was amazing, he also done that strange 'walk' backwards and sideways on stage while playing the darn thing!! To me he had a unique sound and approach, although I am more a six string fellah!!! I just close my eyes and try to figure out what he did lol I only saw them the once and Masami Tsuchiya was guest guitarist...he was good.....

    RIP Mick Karn

  • @hub1971 ...... Oh Hell YES! i totally agree with You

  • @biladd dude it's '82 not 83 X

  • @hub1971

Oh, yes. Japan is over on Dec, 82. I just put the date of the "copyright"! ;) Thanx!

  • @biladd it's from sometime around here - 17-22/11/82 - London Hammersmith Odeon (6 nights)
