Matt Johnson is probably the finest song writer of his generation and certainly the equal of any before. His music has been the soundtrack of my adult life, from my first serious girlfriend playing me her sister's copy of Soul Mining whilst I waited for her to get ready for our first date, through to seeng The THe with my wife before we were married and playing his music to my kids in my 40s. I love you too Matt.
if any of you are aware of Matt's current "Save shoreditch" campaign. myself and a few of his loyal fans have decided to do everything in our power to encourage Matt to do a gig at the site to try and raise awareness for his cause. We think that with enough interest he might go for the idea. The plan is to get as much support as we can so if your interested in helping plz spread the word and join The The (and Matt johnsons) Face book and my space pages and check for further details. How can anyone living in the UK today not relate to this song? Where the "it's better, but much worse" theme seems to resonate like Matt's voice across the country....So, Mr. Johnson....still finger fimrly on the pulse and still relevant after all these years! Can't think of a better line in pop music than....."...the weeping skies, the shadowless days.".....England or what? I love you mate! My life's better with you and your music in it!!
It is truly amazing that a songwriter and musician can continue to produce music of this calibre and depth consistently over so many years and still be a relatively cult performer. Matt is one of the few genius' of the musical world over the last 30 years.
@hamsterinablender I would love to agree with you. I miss Matt so much but he has produced very little of any note over the last 10 to 15 years or so. Naked Self was about 10 years ago an although good I don't think it was what he intended. Come back Matt. Please.
iknow the-the for so long i can't remember when i started to listen to them !!! i just wonder if they are very known in USA or just as the same than in europe ?? (mythic group but not really known !)
Nah---they were never more than a small cult fave in the U.S.---they were too diverse,weird ,dark and disturbing for the airwaves---their songs still kick ass,though, after all these years--this is the firstitem I'm hearing this one,though. Sadly, the only album I have by them (it's a casette,actually) is their 1995 release, Hanky Panky---their version of Hank Williams' "I Saw The Light" is the absolute bomb off that whole release.
I have been looking for this song for 11 (yes eleven) years...
Thanks for sharing

I think 45 RPM is definitely one of the best collection albums I've ever heard.

@CalemBendell
Agree. Fantastic stuff. There is a shift too in the chronology of his writing from angry, lustful to uncertain, regretful. It's brilliant music.

what can I say he's a real genius in terms of music lyrics and the combination of such a marvellous taste.

Great song! i've got 45rpm and Nakedself, and they're both great albums. Unfortunately they're not famous in Italy...

Not famous anywhere... that's why Matt's so cool.
The is ignored by searches.
