Point is they got the right people in the end. They arrested students, journalists and intellects voicing legitimate concerns. Just for good measure they practiced mass arrests where they have no idea who they even scoop up. This is called cattling. They arrested average people for dissent in all forms. 1100 of them.
They allowed a few hundred kids to run rampant. I was there and was even involved in a confrontation with a girl with a bat. Her and a small cluster of squeaky voiced boys told me to stop filming, I stood my ground and they walked away from a confrontation. The police could have arrested them all. Instead, they got 1100 of the wrong people.
But this problem goes way beyond the police which obviously some people here are ignorant to. Btw, it's not the slums, ghettos and projects that need to be protested. It's the source that controls the continuation of them, which is why there was a protest to begin with. The source being world leaders that put corporate and government greed before the real people who make this world go around. Think about that when you look at how much money was deducted from your pay cheque.

"Abduction" of the protestors is a standard procedure to remove upsparkers and flamers in the demonstrators to prevent further violence. It may look scary but thats the point.
The "smash and grab" tactic is certainly intended to be "scary", because it is an intimidation tactic, but is has nothing to do with removing "upsparkers" or "flamers" in order to "prevent violence".
The grabs are intended to be somewhat random in order to leave the remaining protesters petrified that they could be next. The police are the ones perpetuating the violence.
The purpose is to discourage protesters from showing up at all next time.

Sure they had orders, but if that order contradicts the very purpose of their job, a position of authority, of importance to society, then they should speak out against it at the very least. In the Spadina and Queen(i think those were the streets) incident, they arrested everyone. If someone was saying YAAA LETS KILL ZEES COPS, sure you can justify removing them at that point, but arresting someone for wearing a certain colour shirt? Doesn't do it for me.

For those remarking, "but they were peaceful protesters" - that is entirely the point of these tactics.
Police can deal with the small number of rioters (you will note that many tactics seen at G20 are entirely absent at events like the Vancouver hockey riots) and there is no particular reason to come down hard on them. Damaging private or public property is illegal and there is no reason to further discourage this.
Peaceful protest is legal...there very much a reason to discourage it.
