Two issues here:

1) If so much food was lost when the plane was washed away, wouldn't it now have returned with the plane (becasuse the storm was only 4 days earlier).

2) When Nathan is pinned under the plane, he could just raise his head and torso to stay above water, right?

The whole scene I was saying, "dig!". It should have been a fairly simple solution: remove the sand from underneath his leg and then he can pull it out. But of course moving the plane makes for better TV. :)
