@heomak he means that it was not in his hands to fall in love with her, that there wasn´t a choice for him, because his instinct had already chosen her before he could notice it, so in the bottom he is apologizing for not being able to avoid it.

He's unfriendly and reserved towards her, because he doesn't want her to know that he loves her and the more reserved he is the less she might try to be in touch with him, which will make it easier for him to MAYBE forget her?

It means that he prefers to avoid her because she is the wife of his best friend. (is not only self preservation, as you can see).

Self-preservation: Well Actually he´s deeply in love with her, but offcourse he can´t have her. So to "protect" him self from getting hurt, he constantly tries to keep her at a distance... Not getting too acquainted with her... (I think) :-)
