However, my friend who plays bass and knows this song on bass says your fingers are in the right place all the time.

Thus ill assume its a perfect cover because if you was doing it wrong, 1 hed see, and 2, id hear something totally random.

it's very hard to do the gallop with 2 fingers. i can't believe that steve harris only uses 2, if you watch the maiden vids, it almost looks like he's using 4, and because he's going so fast, it's really hard to tell if he's only using 2, you almost need to watch him in slow-mo

i play guitar, since the early 90's and mostly metal, so i gallop well with a pick. i started playing bass around 7 years ago off and on. i can play this song perfect with a pick, but it's very hard for me to gallop with my fingers. i can do it to a certain extent, but not good enough, i do it with 3 fingers. steve harris is definitely the best all-time metal bassist in my opinion

ok, to sum it up for you guys, if you pluck the string with your middle finger, then do the same with your index finger, it should give the same effect as a tripple finger gallop.

I'm not entirely sure, but I would say that it's made up of both 8th and 16th notes. That's a big part of Steve's style of galloping bass.
