God, i love this song. Everything she wants is so simple. It sounds like my life. I dont want to be rich, I just want to be be comfortable and have a family. Just pure beauty, i think :)
She sang this like a Disney princess... overdone and draggy... Ellen at least is unique.. Ellen tells a story.. this one sounds karaoke-ish.. cabaret...
Not that Kerry Butler didn't do a fantastic job here or anything -- she did -- but for me I think seems these days the thing to do on broadway is to cast these sort of iconic roles with people who sing like "Broadway." There's girls all over NYC who could sing this as well as Kerry Butler. It would be nice to see someone who STOOD OUT in their own way playing the role.
no hate but...I cannot stand ellen greene's voice. won't even listen to the original album, that's how much I hate it... kerry butlers voice on the other hand, is amazing.
why are we comparing people? every performer has their own way of interpreting the songs. the fact that she's still working on broadway proves that she's doing something right.
I like this more than Ellen Greene's version, simply because I hated her voice when it came to singing. I know, I know, it fit the character and all, it just wasn't very pleasant for me :3
i think what Ellen Greene brought to the role was this innocent heartbreaking vulnerability that her character had. I think Kerry Butler is great, she's an awesome singer but Ellen Greene didn't just sing Audrey, she -was- Audrey and so far only her version can bring me close to tears :p - but either way I think every performer has their own interpretation of the role, and kerry butler does have an amazing voice :)
Let's face it -- Kerry Butler is awesome, but Ellen Greene is, was and will ALWAYS be "Audrey". The LSOH movie is still one of my guiltiest pleasures of all-time... :)
Gorgeous. I love how quietly emotional she gets despite the fact that this is a completely out of context performance. I wish I could have seen her play Audrey - I have never seen a good one.
I do prefer Ellen Greene's version, and here is why.
Kerry, as lovely as her voice is, does not sing this with the kind of dynamic control that Ellen possesses. Ellen uses a very soft voice of contemplation for the quieter passages, whereas Kerry seems to sing most of the song at the same volume ... It is simply not as emotionally expressive, and since this is an emotional song, this matters alot.
Also: @ 1:03 (plastic), she pitches up, slightly off tone and obvious.
@TrajanGregory you have to keep in mind this performance is out of context. I saw Kerry in this show and she was much more expressive like you described
@elphbwckd Quite right. This performance is out of context. I thought Kerry was expressive enough, especially for what appears to be a newscast, because you see tears well up. Immediately following "Better Homes and Gardens magazine" I really felt her performance shift from exploring a fantasy to a lament about her current condition. Judging from her facial expressions, she knows exactly what the song means to Audrey and how it is simultaneously touching, amusing, and depressing.
@elphbwckd - I agree that the venue is not ideal, and there was not continuity as there would be in the actual show. Even then, I do think Ellen does a better job of it, but you know what ? - What is the point of splitting hairs here .... I would enjoy either Audrey, either way .... The piece itself is a brilliant work of art, no matter who is singing it ...

@RebeletteRose Ellen Signs it as if she Feels it, shes there, she loves him, she wants this.. this is great but sounds like shes just singing it no feeling.
@maknib I don't think Butler sings with no feeling, just a different feeling. She is really hoping for this dream, while Ellen Greene is more bittersweet and doubtful. Greene's Audrey sings like she really lives on Skid Row, dreaming of something better but knowing that dreams don't come true. Kerry Butler sings like...well, like Ariel in "The Little Mermaid." She feels it, but not with the too-downtrodden-to-really-hope soulfulness that Greene gave it.
The most amazing thing about Kerry's performance - other than her beautiful voice - is how pervasive the accent is without being overdone. It's so hard to do it well like that. most have a tinge, or none at all. I want to BE Kerry when I grow up..... too bad i'm already grown up. :-(
I, love her. She is just absolutely phenomenal and just such an amazing performer. She's a star and I think it is safe to say that she is well on her way to becoming a Broadway legend.

I don't like Ellen Greene but there is no doubt she was a great Audrey. Even still, I prefer this version.

She's great, but I think Ellen Greene "gets it" a little more. It's the only way I can explain it.
