as far as pedals go its essentially impossible to get a good brown sound but I think that the vox tonelab can get pretty close at high volume and with a shit load of tweeking but I think the boss 5150 sound is just shit. nice playing though

Not true... Eddie got his tone largely because of the MXR Distortion +, a hell of a pedal (which I happen to have).

Dial your drive way the hell up there (on the amp and the pedal), add some reverb, and hope to somebody's god your amp doesn't have cheap speakers (lower-tier Celestions are some of the worst offenders). It also helps to have a naturally bright guitar, like Eddie's Stratocaster. Alder body + Maple neck = bright, "screaming" tone.

I think that we could all agree that the main ingredients here are: A good tube amp with lots of gain, A phaser, reverb and or slapback delay. We all have different gear and need to adjust these things to taste but, in the end, should be able to get a sound that we're happy with no matter what brand of effects. I didn't use the 5150 emulation on the boss although I can see why cstrombeck thought so. I agree the sound could be better but thanks for the compliments guys.

i'm pretty pretty much positive that eddie never used a distortion plus pedal or overdrive/ distortion type pedals he got his sound from a 1959SLP Marshall head he got when he was 14. but who the hell could afford (or find) one of those these days I have recently upgraded to a peavey 5150 II which gets a shit load better tone quality than pretty much any nontube item i can think of I would recomend it to anyone and they are priced fairly decently nowaday's
