  • This is exactly what i was looking for.

  • 撐Google

  • Eameace must be Obamas economist. Clueless

  • Bottom line: if you're looking for less crime, the USA is not the place for you! And stats show a vast improvement here in the USA over the 1980s and 90s, especially in New York.

  • Assaults per capita: 7.5 per 1000 people (#6), Germany 1.4% (#26).

  • That's USA 7.5. In total crime it is much closer: USA ranks #8 with 80 per 1000; Germany #11 with 75. I noticed that Germany is #1 in drug offenses by a wide margin. what's going on there? IMO there shouldn't be drug offenses. I did think Germany was smarter than that; like Switzerland and Netherlands are.

  • I don't know why, but Alcohol and Drugs are very popular among young people. Not hard drugs though, mostly weed, coke and speed.

I've seen kids as young as 11 smoking weed while I was in school. The legal drinking age here is 14 (for beer and if accompanied by an adult), 16 for buying beer and 18 for everything else. I think we have the most alcoholics in Europe aside from Poland and Slovakia, if I recall. I was in Slovakia once, everyone there seemed to be drunk even my taxi driver

  • The site where I got the stats did explain, I saw; saying Germany is a distribution and financial center. So most of the crimes are about the big drug business, not users, it appears. I would call coke and speed "hard" drugs, but as for the statistic of Germany as #1, you report lots of Germans use drugs and alcohol, but are lots of users and/or dealers being arrested and jailed? In the USA we have lots of people in jail, a good proportion of them black drug users and dealers.

  • No, users aren't jailed here. Actually the consumption itself is not illegal, it's just illegal to buy, own or traffic the stuff (which theoretically makes it illegal to get to the point where you can consume it).

  • Kuner1: stats can be deceiving, but I looked up a couple of things. In education you appear to be right; Germany is mediocre, which is surprising given their economic leadership position. In crime the US has 16,000 murders (5th place) per capita while Germany has 914 (still high enough for 18th place), and most smaller European nations are among the best.

  • Is this Pelosis "pool boy"?

  • Free marketeers frame the issue as the "size of government," but its really about allowing rich people to keep their money, and to make it while keeping everyone else poor and screwing the public and the planet. THEY want to be the government, instead of the people.

  • Actually rich people don't usually "keep" their money, because it would just lose value. Rich people either spend or invest their money. Both means the money goes somewhere and is put to work. Usually people will be a lot more careful and also effective about spending their own money than a government is. A government shoulp provide basic services & security, but every other penny they take from the population is missed by the people.

  • The trickle-down theory is false. even free-marketeers in the USA don't use it as much as their anti-government rhetoric. Govt investment is needed because business is only interested in short term profit. Long-term projects for the public good need govt help. People are not more careful; witness credit card debt, and the indulgence you mention above. We do have "pork," though, which is not spneing per se but allocation for political purposes; both parties do it.

  • Being only interested in short term profit is actually a sign of bad business. Good business is always interested in keeping their customers happy.

Yes, both political partys have a lot of pork spending, you have that everywhere were people get to spend money they didn't actually earn themselves. That alone is reason enough to restrict government spending to the bare minimum.

  • Yes Kuner, but that is what characterizes most business-- interest in short term gain. Also narrow interest; only their own and not the community's. All business requires investment in infrastructure and other capital; business alone can't do it; it requires the govt and always has. Restricting money to those who "earn" it is resentment; not a real basis for policy but instead a crippling ideology. The rich do not earn their money; they extort it, inherit it, steal it from society.

  • Wouldn't say so. I'm quite wealthy myself (not rich yet), and I have neither inherited it, nor have I extorted or stolen it from anyone. I worked my ass off for it, didn't have a day off for 7 years, but I developed a product no one else did and that people enjoy. Not only that, but I now employ a few people as well. I've given to society and society gave me in return. I never took from anyone.

  • If you are not rich I'm not talking about you. You aren't even an American, so circumstances are way different anyway. American cEOs get huge salaries and bonuses and make 100+ times more than the workers who actually create the wealth. In a free market, it is the greedy and aggressive who drive others out of business and dominate the market. You are not alone in your wealth; society's investments gave it to you. Individualism is just blind to the facts. Resentment is not economics.

  • Sure, some CEOs earn tons of money. But what's wrong with that? It's not you or me who is paying for it. If some corporation owner (or owners i.e. shareholders) agree to pay a guy 100 million a year since he earns the company 500 million, then that's their deal. Why would one want to interfere, that'd be the same as if one would limit the amount of money a plumber can charge. If someone charges too much, he'll be out of work soon enough.

  • @Kuner1 I don't think it's right. We all pay for the high salaries, because we pay the prices and invest in their businesses and financial instruments. The market doesn't work to limit how much people make, if some people dominate the market and the company others works for. CEOs get high salaries because they rule their company. Wealth = power, so when someone has too much money, democracy is in danger. We do in fact live in an oligarchy in the USA. Money rules.

  • Sure we pay their salaries by buying their products (or investing in their business otherwise). But at least we are free to not buy their product, if we don't approve of it. With the government, we don't have that choice, we don't give to them, they take from us.

  • When rich people spend money, it benefits them and not the economy. when poor people spend money, it goes to basic needs we all have and the economy prospers.

  • Actually the economy doesn't prosper as much by basic needs being covered because those rarely fuel innovation, creating jobs in the process. Still all money spent by the people is good.

If you buy a car for example, you try to buy the car that suits your needs best and at the best price possible. No government official could do that better than you. Same goes for all spending and investing. Ideally the US economy would have 300 mil people spending their money as effectively as they could.

  • We're not talking about who shops. Stimulus and welfare is good for the economy because it puts money in peoples pockets, and builds infrastructure at the same time. Mixed economies are best; not socialist, not individualist.

  • Actually the stimulus could have been a prime example of how to get an economy going: by giving out money. The same goes for nearly all incentives to spend money: Be it the cash for clunkers program or the tax deductable donations for haiti. When they really want to, politicians already know how to stimulate the economy: By cutting taxes. Most politicians nowadays are more interested in taking over the economy, because they think they know best and earn earn millions by redistributing money.

  • Cutting taxes can stimulate the economy, if its given to the people, not just the rich. The rich need to pay more; they cause the problems with their speculation, monopolies, pollution, low wages and bad working conditions. But cutting taxes alone causes huge deficits, and if you cut spending on the wrong things, you don't create conditions for growth. Mixed solutions are best; not fanatical right-wing, free-market libertarian economics. It's just a religion; it doesn't work in the real world.

  • @eameece

Agreed, you gotta spend to create conditions for growth, like infrastructure, education etc. Got no problem with that at all. You want the state to build roads, bridges, you want health inspections, fire fighters, police etc. You want these things to work and the ones responsible for them to answer to the people, not a corporation. Totally agree.

It's juast gone way beyond that, the governments are throwing money out the window and are hurting the economy and the people themselves

  • @Kuner1 Good, we agree. I also agree that governments throw away money; we need to hold them accountable. I am a financial moderate, but we disagree about what constitutes throwing money away.

  • I guess we'll have to agree to disagree there.

My personal opinion: Social engineering is what constitutes throwing money away

  • @Kuner1 My opinion: it is pork projects meant to boost political standing. Social engineering is a buzz word, but if society needs to use less oil, for example, then policies should encourage that.

We're talking about high salaries, the CEOs and other financial jugglers get 1000s more than workers who equally deserve it, just because they run the company. Wealthy people have too much power. Therefore, it's not wrong to tax them at a higher rate; higher than we do in the USA.

  • IMPEACH the bastard.

  • 1 year and the democrat government is already broken.

i hope this will be a lesson to you americans, don't fall for style over substance

  • @Kuner1 yeah; better elect someone who can't speak or spell instead.

  • @eameece

still better than one who wants to expand government.

besides, if you actually listen to bush during interviews, he doesn't spound dumb at all. he's no einstein, but he's a pragmatic thinker and he has a good sense of humor.

  • My point that it is not about style over substance, as you said. If the "democrat government" is broken, it is the republicans who broke it. It is not about expanding government; it is about making the right choices about what government does. You right-wingers make ALL the wrong choices. Unnecessary wars, torturing our enemies, causing depressions, keeping a few rich and the many poor, advancing the delusion that "the market will take care of it" when it only takes care of the greedy; etc.

  • @eameece

oh come on, waterboarding is not torture. read up on what the chinese, north koreans or russians do for a lot lesser reasons thans plotting terror attacks. you'd rather risk innocent lives instead?

the depression was caused by the subprime mortgage crisis, itself the result of leftist policys forcing the banks to hand out loans no one in their right mind would approve.

the market actually does take care of itself, if it's left alone for once

  • Us lefties are not going to let you right wingers get away with your nonsense. Everyone who is informed know that lefties did not force banks to give away loans; that was just another deregulation scheme in the Reagan mold, and many Democrats have aped his ways. Many people took those loans that had nothing to do with lefty politicians, and then the big banks created "instruments" out of bundles of them and sold them on margin. If you don't know about derivatives, you show how ignorant you are.

  • The market NEVER takes care of itself. Everyone is not eager to share wealth and power. Let the market alone, and a few greedy and powerful people dominate it and make all of society's rules. That is just another kind of "government" of the corporate kind. Of course waterboarding is torture, and it saves no lives; it just encourages more terrorism against us and makes us total hypocrites.

  • The USA has supported dictatorships for years. We made Haiti what it is today with 60 years of corrupt totalitarian rule. Yet we preach ideals of freedom. We need to live up to our ideals or stop preaching them. I guess that's no concern of yours, being a German. So why defend right wing wackos in the USA? Germans today are smarter than we are. Why are you supporting American wackos? Are you lonely? Too few of you over there, Kuner?

  • Because I know America and have plans to move there sometime soon, simply to get away from over-taxation and this broken beaurocratic nightmare here.

You think Germans are smarter? Guess you haven't been here, education is miserable (I know it isn't great in America, too, but at least you have some elite schools), crime is high (murder rate of Berlin has passed New York), taxes are rdiculous and all the money goes to corrupt politicians and people on welfare who refuse to work

  • I've been thinking about the opposite move. Sounds like you are on the make. For an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to get rich and has lots of money, America is a good place. For most others, it sucks. But your report is worth considering; maybe I'll do some checking. Of course, in America right-wing people say the exact same thing about where their money goes; it's just slogans. Germans are very literate and informed; why say education is miserable there? On college you are probably right.

  • It will be hard to find accurate info except from people who actually live here. I'll try to go through various points in my replys to you.

Germans are indeed very literate, but they aren't tought to think "outside the box". That is why I say the education system is poor. We have 3 basic school branches with no specialization for certain classes. Everyone must learn everything, which means that the learning tempo orientates itself by the slowest student in class.

  • Unfortunately students in the USA are no longer taught to think outside the box either. This is a concern, given the importance of American innovation for the USA and the world. Since the Reagan era there is a "back to basics" mania, and all students are tested to make sure they learn them. So teachers teach to the test. We also ended tracking (a "liberal" idea, to be sure), but as a sub teacher I notice there are some slower and faster classes, but mostly everyone's in one pot here too.

  • eeeeeeeh....eeeeh...eeeeh... its like watching 20 twenty cops interrogate a criminal....

  • This faggot makes me want to puke also!

  • one star for obama selling out his base

  • what do you mean?

  • Obama is moving QUICKLY to the right everyday wether he's union bashing with his healthcare bill(taxing "cadilac" plans) or embracing tax breaks for the rich, he doesnt care about his progressive base. Now most progressives arent in favor of tax increases on business because that can/will effect jobs but thinking increasing capital gains tax to 20-25% is going to "kill" investing in utter nonsense or that increasing personal income taxes from 36% to 39-40% is not communist.

  • He's not moving right or left . He's communist, he is also a puppet who is saying what his puppet masters are telling him to say. There is no change from the Lil cowboy monkey George to the Kenyan monkey Barry. The new healthscare crisis is a clown show and the terror war is a farce. The war on drugs should be against the pharma co's. These idiots have destroyed what was once a great nation.Wake up its time for the Second American Revolution. Today.

Hang em all. Aim to live people.

  • communist? communist? im so fuckin sick & tired of people using big words they dont understand, read the communist manifesto and see what it really means! NOw i agree with some of what you said but you take things out of context. THIER IS A HEALTHCARE crisis & it was created by the insurance companies and pharma. The war on terror is a farce for profit, ill give you that one. he isnt kenyan & lots of his ideas in his speech last night were from the right.

  • Stop supporting parties that only want to lead this country. Its up to the people to lead this country not a selected few politicians to lead the people and this Great Country. Both the Democrats and Republicans are in denial of there roles for the people and this country.

Support The Whig Party, join, file for electoral. For a more centrist supportive role for the people and the Government under the Constitution.

    God Bless the USA...

  • The democratic party has been INFILTRATED by a WW2 NAZI named:

    George Soros.

    Wake the fuck up people!

    earstohear . net/soros.html

  • Those who gave warning from the onset are not busy casting nets, and they welcome the demise of our Democratic Party. This is particularly due to President Obama being a compulsive liar, and now no one can believe another Democrat will ever deliver a thing he or she promises. President Obama has filled the Democratic Party hot air balloon to the limit and it has burst. It falls like a failing parachute taking along nearly everyone of us within the Democratic Party.

  • Unblock and read this comment people...

    VVVVVVVVVVVV

  • Bernanke doesn't get my vote! No transparency; support for bankers.

  • News just in: NASA confirms the 2000s were the hottest decade on record. You can have the conspiracy nuts; I'll take NASA. Meanwhile the free-market ideologues' great hero, Exxon-Mobil, caused another big oil spill. Europe requires double-hulled tankers; the USA does not. Why? Because of free-market ideology and the corporate money lobbying it enables.

  • no duh its rigged everyone is rigged for both sides.... bush had a crazy amount of pardens..u know why because u told people to do illeagle things to get his vote higher........then he just pardens him out of jail...

  • @FurryFenNick

The voting here is rigged by the Whitehouse and I caught them at it.

No go back to sleep FurryFenNick.

  • @NookulerFreedom

    please shut the fuck up.

  • Unemployment is probably around 20% considering once one's unemployment checks expire THEY ARE NO LONGER COUNTED.

  • Bernanke is a consummate liar which is why everybody in congress loves him.

  • I think it should be noted at this point that out of 100 million people on the internet I am the only one to take one the establishment.

  • Bush = Tripled the Size of Govt, Got us into two wars, spent us into a recession, gave us Patriot Act, Guantanamo Bay, torture, supported Federal Reserve, supported bailouts and stimulus plans, supported bogus war on terror, drug war

Obama = OUTBUSHED BUSH on spending, supported bailouts and had own stimulus plan, continued the wars, continued patriot act, continued rendition, torture, guantanamo bay, supports federal reserve, continues bogus war on terror, drug war, rendition

    WHAT CHANGED???????

  • Bogus war? Hm, alright then. I guess 9/11 never happened.

  • If we break it, we own it. Anything less is insanely irresponsible, regarding the middle east. The bailouts had bipartisan support and economists across the board believe it prevented global depression, not recession. The stimulus is supported across the board by mainstream economists. Secret prisons were shut down and rendition of CIA detainees has been going on for 40 years. Congress, especially the GOP opposed shutting down Guantanamo and tied Obama's hands.

  • @synapsecracklepop The Mainstream economists did not see the crisis coming along with Ben Bernanke! The same people that are saying bailouts and stimulus helped the economy and that we are on the path to improvement are the same people who were DEAD WRONG and were saying the economy was doing great when in fact we were sliding downward and it was easily seen by many Economists from the AUSTRIAL SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND LUDWIG VON MISES INSTITUTE. Obama does not support audit of the fed. PUPPET

  • Plenty of mainstream economists saw it. The Austrian school of economics is a discredited bunch of libertarians, rejected by proper economists.

  • @pgunn01 No they didn't. Bernanke didnt see it, when Peter Schiff was on TV in 2005 and 2006 everyone in the media was making fun of him and saying everything was great. Austrian school of economics is not discredited whatsoever, they predicted the depression of 1929 and predicted the economic collapse we are witnessing right now. Please watch "Peter schiff was right"

  • Many mainstream economists saw it - I don't know if Bernanke did, but he is not exactly an academic economist (I'm don't much like him, fwiw).

The Austrian school isn't a true academic school - it's a bunch of politicos who want to justify libertarianism, not people who study markets. They have no credibility in academia, and so they're usually ignored except by Libertarians and some conservatives.

  • @pgunn01 Again incorrect. Mainstream economists did not see this coming whatsoever they lied and said everything was great. Austrian school of economics is not a bunch of politicos it is filled with economists who write many books

(ludwig von mises, murray rothbard, hayek was even a noble prize winner) The reason they have not been mentioned in the mainstream is because they tell the truth, and they have been ignored by the NEOconservatives on fox news because they follow keynesian economics.

  • Everyone uses Keynesian economics because it's the dominant economic theory. If you walk onto any university campus pretty much anywhere in the world, you'll have a very tough time finding an Austrian-school economist in their Economics department. Libertarian think tanks are pretty much the only place you can easily spot them.

Libertarian propogandists love to pretend that Austrian economists are the only people who saw this. They're simply wrong. Nobody debunks them because they're trolls.

  • Peter Schiff for Senator in 2010. If he's not able to get a Republican nomination he should go run as a independent or a Modern Whig Party candidate.

  • @synapsecracklepop secret prisons have NOT BEEN SHUT DOWN THATS A COMPLETE LIE, THERE ARE MANY OF THEM STILL IN POLAND, ROMANIA AND UKRAINE

  • You want Obama to discontinue the Federal Reserve, reverse 30 years of Drug Policy, and foreign policy in the twinkling of an eye.... and because he can't or won't, you compare him to Bush? 2/3rds of the Patriot Act are not Constitutionally proscribed and if you want the remaining third de-activated, do something besides make absurd allegations. I suppose if a wheel falls off a jet in Singapore, it's Obama's fault. Ideologues are useless. You couldn't organize a picnic without a Seven-Eleven

  • Here, here! Well said!
