That drum sounds amazing! I've heard before that there is a way to tune a drum to itself, like matching the tone of the head with the tone of the drum with no heads. Would that method work at all?
@13Segruts Tuning to the drum is, in fact, the right way to tune a drum. Any other method of tuning doesn't get the true sound out of the drum. Tap the drum shell, and memorize the pitch. Tune the resonant head first, and get it to match that pitch. Make sure that as you bring the head up to pitch, you constantly tap the drum shell to make sure that everything is truly matching. Once the resonant head and shell are matched, tune the batter head to taste.
@13Segruts If you are wondering why, it has to do with sympathetic resonance. When the shell and the head resonate in sympathy, the drum produces the fullest, most resonant, and most true tone. The batter head deals with the attack, and not the resonance, so that's why you can just tune it to taste. Batter head higher = pitch bend down. Batter head lower = pitch bend up. Batter head same pitch = straight tone/no pitch bend. Have fun tuning!
I use EVANS EC2 SST on both toms as the batter head and the stock Tama reso head...
I can get the 12" Tom sounding exactly how I want it and amazing but I'm constantly struggling with the 14"...
I cannot seem to get it as low as I want it, so when I hit both Toms after one and other... They don't differentiate that much in tone and almost sound the same...
@jrpg0630 to muffal the drum and get rid of the overtone. i really dont recomend tape on a drum because over time it will leave resedue, and if you have a coated head like a snare, it will take that coating off. i recomend moongel or O rings
Is that the high tom or the med tom. Seriously, I have no idea how to make the med and high sound different. Is the high tom smaller than the med? I just bought my drums and need help..
@suiax and @deathboear I TOTALLY AGREE. Me want.

Dude that has to be one the best sounding toms I've ever heard in my life. What drums are you using and what type of Aquarian heads?

@Suiax I totally agree with you, that tom is a beast! I would also like to know what drums are used in these vids.

What are the duct tape for???
Nice video btw !
jrpg0630 1 year ago
@jrpg0630 Glad you liked the video, the duct tape dampens the sound it helps to reduce that unwanted ringing sound.
MusicTrainerDotCom 11 months ago
@MusicTrainerDotCom can you use just tape for this or do you need something special ?
