what do you do with the stag once you have shot it?
I want to go hunting but 1. i dont know the proceidures for hunting and 2 i dont think there is anywere to do big game hunting in rochdale, england....
I usually do not have enough space in my freezer, so it goes to a game dealer and venison ends up in the food chain. I do not sell roe deer, they are much easier to process and usually have a space for 1 or 2.
I am sure you can do some roe deer stalking not far away from home, but for red deer you would have to go a bit further. You do not need to have your own rifle, go out with someone and see if it is something for you.
Yeah stalking sounds like it would be a great experience, i have done some small game hunting before mainly rabbits on a local farm, where we would just give the rabbits to the farmer and he would cook up a beautiful stew and mash with them :P
But yeah i will look into stalking a bit more as it sounds great,
It's really nice to see someone who respects their quarry. I've talked to too many "stalkers" who would be quite happy to shoot, then let someone else deal with the beast. You did well to get that close at 1.50, the fence didn't seem a problem for him, did it!
Thanks for your comment. It was not that far away from the track, but I was pretty knackered at the end. 150lb at the dealer does not sound too much, but it took some time to drag it to the car.
Nice old german ritual with the branch, read about it but never seen anyone do it. I have my own ritual after each kill and usually 1 deer will feed me and my wife a good few months along with wild bird and such,. Good clean kill, bet it was great eating.
@wolfie83 Thanks for your comment. I am quite pleased with the neck shot, but it was my only option, usually go for heart/lung. This stag went to the dealer as it would not fit my freezer unfortunately... we eat all roe though.
@gregloginway Thats the problem, your freezer is never big enough! Do you grind much of your meat into mince or keep it mostly as steaks and such? keep up the good work.

@wolfie83 Usually keep haunch and loin separate and the rest gets minced.
