Whats happened toWagner tempos over time..for me the voice is secondary to conductor duties and choices, both in this and Liebestod, even listening to the best of the best singers, like this example. We never hear it like this now.
this is a true Wotan, as years later Jerome Hines wrote, Wotan is a bass role and not bariton one and De Angelis shows, magnificent, what year was recorded?
One of the greatest singers of all time. My favorite De Angelis records besides this one are the trio from I Lombardi (with Merli and Scacciati) and his magnificent recordings of Mose by Rossini, but he is just superb in everything across an enormous repertoire! Thanks for posting this.
I think the trio from I Lombardi (with Merli and Scacciati is better than the better known ones with Gigli and Caruso . De Angelis is the towering difference and I preter Scacciati's energy to Rethberg's beautiful but more relaxed perfornabce, IMO Caruso is in his own class but his colleagues are not in his and besides Merli is tremendous.
Merli is another favorite artist of mine and he is marvelous in the Lombardi trio, especially effective at the very outset of the scene. And De Angelis is just so overwhelming!
I thought you might like it, His voice is warm and huge and the tenderness of his interpretation is marvelous. Some Wotans sound as though they are scolding Brunnhilde.
This is overwhelmingly magnificent, on every level: the voice, interpretation, and expression are as great as I ever hope to hear in this music. Can you tell us the identity of the conductor and orchestra? I hope somebody posts his solo from Rossini's MOSE, and anything else! Surely he is one of the greatest singers in history.
RE: Conductor - Unfortunately the information I have only tells me that it was a Columbia record. It is possible that Lorenzo Molajoli, who was known as Columbia's "house conductor", directed this record. I can't say for sure though.
The two most asthonishing bass voices on record, for me are Nazzareno De Angelis' and Jose' Mardones'. There is a solo of De Angelis from Rossini's Mose' that leaves the listener "Freddo ed immobile come una statua", or totally stunned for the rest of the day.
Thanks for putting this up, this is one of my favorite basses. Can we hear him sing with Stracciari and Caruso in a balls-to-the-walls opera?? That'd be fun. =)

Wagner should be sung and not shouted. This is a prime example of how it's done. SUBLIME.
