It was the FSB. A gift for Vladimir Putin. If another war in Chechnya will raise, Putin will take the inniatiitive to show the people who is the ruler and what Russia needs now, a strong iron fist. There are huge rival undertakings between Putin and Medvedev. Medvedev as a President is not willing to give up his position to Putin in the next round. So, uncle Vlad will do everything that's nessecary to rise like a phoenix.

@EmperorofTerra Well, if you are thinking that I think Chechnya started the war then I can see where you are coming from. The problem is, I don't think that way. Chechnya is a country and it cannot start a war, however, there was Dudaev, I believe, who was very ambitious to take over the whole country and he provoked Russian forces to start taking action. Does that sound reasonable for you?

@EmperorofTerra hear about them? cmon, I was starring at the TV whole time with my family. It's just, making assumptions that Putin did this to get to the top, well, that's sad. You see, bombings occurred because Russian forces were killing those bad guys (I am not saying they were all Chechen, clearing that up to make sure you don't think that I have blind hate for all Chechen people), there were lots of people from different countries and nationalities, if I remember correctly...

But when the good guys are winning, the bad guys get desperate, and they try to scare the good guys by killing innocent people and it has always worked and it's working even today. That's why a lot of bad guys are using these tactics all over the world. It's very COST EFFECTIVE from a military point of view.

@EmperorofTerra you may ask how he provoked, well, he took a little bit, and Russia didn't do anything, then he tried to take more, and then it got more noticeable, then he tried to take even more (ambition and greed), but Russia as a country (not Putin for personal gain) decided to stop him. Believe me, if I take your piece of cake without asking, you will get pissed, if I take even more, you WILL want to beat my ass up :)

Ok, besides that what you listed down, is not fully true, the reason why the Chechnya war took so long ( officialy ended last year, though people still die there ) is not, that the Russian army wasn't able to eliminate the very overrated Chechen resistance ( especially in the second war, where they counted some max. 1.000 badly armed prepared and partly unloyal fighters ) within of weeks or max two months. No, it is all about profit and good image.

Yes, war is to gain profit and make money, but that's not the goal of both sides of those who are at war. In this situation, Dudaev was the one after money and power, and Putin (not even Putin, but Russian) was there to stop that.

I mean it's still is in many ways, but it's also better and stronger in many ways.

I would have still beleived the same, if the war didn't took some 20 very unnessecary years for the bleeding Russian army, the hungry Russian population and especially the till today dying Chechen population.
