  • Why do the 'tenor' drummers of a Scots pipe band also have the same flow? except they call it 'flourishing' and not 'poi'?? if you find that an interesting question...you may find that the general idea of ' 'poi & the flow arts originated only in Aotearoa(NZ) '' may be based on an invalid deduction ~~~ please also look at the answers from India that 'JoriAcharyas' channel is trying to explore, ~ Shanti

  • Absolutely astounding.

  • Very simple

  • Dan <3

    Maori poi <3

  • I just arrived in New Zealand and I was amazed at how light their poi are. At first I thought this was just crazy but now that I've seen it in action I'm astonished at how beautiful it is.

Question: Did you ever use any of these traditional styles in your contemporary routines? If so how?

  • I love this, it's fun!

This could be a good work out to do in your room :-D

I'm already planning to work with a Bellydance workout dvd I've got, i love dance 'and culture so it's perfect.

Thanks for sharing this video because i never knew this.

  • R.I.P. Dan

  • I can't get the bounce on the arms part! It's so crazy!

  • kia ora, awesome teacher, I learnt that single poi when I was 10 and I know how hard it is to learn and to teach the double poi. Really good for anyone wanting to learn the basics of traditional Maori Poi. Interesting to hear about all the other styles of contemporary poi picked up in the world, does that derive from maori poi?.

  • she's hot.

  • My friend ( who got me into poi dancing in the first place) taught me to practice the flicking on the wrist thing... I didn't think how to use it, but your videos make me think how rigid my dancing was. It's great seeing traditional style!

Now, hopefully I can create my own style..

  • hi i have a question whats the difference between glowstringing and poi and what is glowstringing

  • This is the best traditonal poi lesson on the internet! Does anyone know where I can see more traditional long and short poi instructional videos?

  • thats cool i like all the stalls and changing directions, looks mesmerizing will be fun to try someday with like flowtoys as handles and on strings.

  • I thought we were supposed to avoid the self-hitting.

  • that is for modern poi dancing

    this is traditional

  • Oh really and I who thought they were just doing it systematically wrong all the time

I love it when internet people don't understand that I'm just joking

  • well the comments can't really show much emotion so you can't really tell who's joking and who's not

  • Haha boarding school memories flash bak az i remembr the hours on end we practisd thru the nyt bt using sockz or bread bags so we wouldnt pakaru the pois for comp. Neat clip!

  • impressive indeed

  • 0.o that looks more challenging than modern (non-traditional) poi!

Very cool video. I think I'll stick with the newer ways of poi though :p

  • Migoto you rock! I am Maori living in Oz so attempting to pick up poi on my own and live the culture, hence the name. The beat patterns make heaps of sense to me. I learn by listening to the sound patterns the poi make along with the visual.
