I think it is key for followers of Buddha to understand how the modern world sees the religion, in order to be able to spread the teachings of Buddha most effectively. Has anyone seen My Reincarnation? It's a documentary that follows the Rinpoche Chogyal Namkhai Norbu and his family for twenty years. The way he deals with these exact issues is enlightening. To see followers of all age and race and background come to him and hear his teachings is truly inspiring. bitly .com/s5zUze
I wonder what is his opinion about systems such as Yoga (which btw is more about mind than physical as commonly conceived) which achieve similar goals as that of Buddhist meditation? Isn't that modern?
Greco-Buddhism, sometimes spelt Graeco-Buddhism, refers to the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE
Sogyal is over emphasizing the findings of modern neuroscientific studies on meditation in an effort to bolster his claim that meditation is beneficial and that science is only just now catching up with what the Buddhists knew all along. I agree that meditation may have some benefits, but they are likely much more unremarkable than is commonly claimed.
While it may seem that it is over-emphasized, if you look at some of the work being done by Dr. Richard Davidson at the UW-MadisonLab for Affective Neuroscience, work done with Dr. Mathieu Ricard, Jon Kabat-Zinn and others, as well as perusing PubMed for scientific journals, you'll find quite a bit of work being done on this subject. Not over-emphasized. Just under-studied, and that's changing.
good to have teachers like Sogyal rinpoche go arounding reminding Bhutanese youth about how profound yet how applicable Buddhism is to modern life. Bhutanese youths need to hear more teachings like this because most of them don't understand what Buddhism is and are looking to Christianity.
It is always a joy to watch Sogyal Rinpoche's teachings. The clarity of his teachings and his attitude towards things are really inspiring. Thanks for sharing this video.

In the sutras : a disciple asked Buddha, "what's the use of yoga", answer: Oh! it's nothing, it only brings hapinness
