Usually I hate when people admire celebrities just because they're good-looking, but not River Phoenix. Unlike most good-looking celebrities, he really had talents.
If you think he's sober or only drank alcohol for this interview you're sadly mistaken. He clearly had done hard drugs before this interview. Most hard drugs make you not eat ,that's why his face is so pale. He's probably wearing the glasses to cover up his strung out eyes.
@wangobangodango well River died on October 31st 1993 and Kurt died on 5th of April 1994....there are 6 months in between as far as I know how to count
"a photo can take your soul" is a last scene shot at dark blood he stared into camera after they stopped but camera was still rolling... it's so sad what happened to him :(

This is hard to watch. Remembering and re-watching my favorites of his, like Running on Empty, or I Love You to Death, as he looked pure and so spiritually formed now makes this interview look tragic as his decline because of addiction. For me, River will always be remembered for his pure soul as an activist, actor, and musician who viewed the world much more beautifully than most within the limelight. Like his surname, I'm sure his spirit exists as a phoenix. He was a beautiful soul. RIP River
so i understand, why people may think he was 'high' here, but i don't think we should jump to conclusions, because it could be totally innocent, he could've been tipsy on alcohol, or he could've just bin in a good, & very hyper mood, as people have stated in the past that he would jus have random, hyper outbursts (even when he was drug free), so we shoulden't jump too conclusions, especially if he isn't here too put us all straight & too defend himself.
but i understand why he carried on acting, because he was acting, he was being a character, whether interviews, he was being himself, so on that note, when he says basically that the camera's scare the shit out off him, i'm guessing he was refering too when he was being interviewed, although here he didn't seem very 'scared', which COULD'VE been the consequences of the drugs if he had been taken them before that particular interview.
he spoke alot of sense, without a doubt though, he was in the wrong business. He didn't handle the pressure of hollywood very well, & I really do believe he was scared of the camera, he seems very lively in this interview, im not stating he was on drugs, because to be frank just because he died of an overdose doesnt mean he was out his face all the time. If you look at previous interviews, he seems very shy
@94CHL Agreed with all you've said...plus, he could have had BPD or another mental disease. So many turn to self-medication, because they don't know how or where to turn to get help, and with actors it's even more difficult in some ways (actually getting help, I mean).
in general u cant blame drug addicts with their addiction on some1 else. its their responsibility even if it all started with a friend giving u some. which happenes most of the time to these junkies. But Rivers family and many other ppl beleive the death of him was bc of john frusciante because i think he gave him cocaine that night or something. And i feel like River, Kurt Cobain, John frusciante, an Hill Slovak would be realy good friends
rubber penis.. haha. good one.. don't want to sound ignorant but ... does anyone know the model of glasses he's wearin' here? or any similar one to them? anyway, great loss his death was.
I've heard that James Franco and Gus Van Sant have put together an epic art film about River from My Own Private Idaho's unseen footage for their recent exhibition. They should put it online or a DVD.
River was so real and too good for Hollywood...Hollywood is a bitch, it eats everything what is good and leaves trash like Paris Hilton :S I feel bad cause I mentioned River and Paris in the same sentence...
@isaurarocks I should beat your fucking ass for calling River Pheonix a douche bag. Your lucky internet tough guy that u talk shit behind the safety of acomputer screen ASS HOLE!
@DJSexLeopard lol. Read my comment again. I said that he wasn't a douchebag. You're the one talking shit. Why don't you just calm down and quit trying to be a tough guy over something so pointless?
Why is it that many "stars" that have so much to say about "America" or the Government, and them not doing anything for the public, such as homeless (which ironically is commonly caused by drugs), junkies etc, add to the problem by becoming Junkies themselves and just dying from overdose? A lot of good you do there. <_<
He seemed like a cool/down to earth/truely intresting guy....but how was 'hollywood' so shocked that he died of an od?? DUDE IS OBVIOUSLY HIIIIGH AS HELL on the brown in this clip....R.I.P.....
He obviously tried to cover his eyes to hide the effects of drugs. Such a shame that people who were close to him were in denial and did not try to help him... Such a wonderful actor! Such a loss!
@ElinaBana Of course not, but I have read the open letter written by his mother. She wrote: "His friends, co-workers and the rest of our family know that River was not a regular drug user." Why was she in denial when it was so obvious?! His real friends knew the truth. Anthony Kiedis also mentioned it in his book...
@sundarithemis Heu no, Stella Artois is from belgium not from Holland, he sais it's from Holland. It's obviously a Heineken. Look at the green bottle.
The comment about US being a police state made me suspicious about his death. Apparently he had also talk about the Children of god sect sexual abusing the children. (Google River Phoenix killed). If that made some give him some lethal drugs on purpose is off course difficult to say but the motive was there. Shut this kid up. RIP River. He was a Natural.
I was only six when he died so I've been much more familiar with his brother Joaquin's career. But watching River's work now is so bittersweet because he puts young, Hollywood "actors" to absolute shame and yet there's nothing more to come from him.
@stonsummergrl18 Martha, also said his reply was 'its because your not listening well enough' & tbh, if you listen too him, he actually does make sense LOL :P! It probably comes accross as jibberish, because the interview has been edited, you don't hear the 'interviewer' asking the questions, you just hear Rivers reply too them, but if you listen carefully (try and not get lost on how beautiful he is lols), you can make sense of what he is saying :)! i had too watch i a few times over tho haha!
@irhjma30000 river's in heaven now n he doesn't have to suffer from his addictions or depression ever again! n there is a heaven if u don't believe me look up NDE stories!
What a tragedy. But the truth is he was slowly becoming what he hated most. I am sad that he died, but on the other hand I don't think I would have enjoyed seeing him throw his life down the drain for drugs. I honestly think that if he were still alive today that we would have just been witnesses to his ''disintegration into the glitter of Hollywood''(River Phoenix) until there was nothing left of him but an empty shell. That transformation would have been worse for him. RIP sweet soul
@jocelyn0745 i think it's disgusting that you are so against drugs that your would say something so horrible about a human being's life. i wish he never would have died. R.I.P River Phoenix
@PieceofMindmusic oh I know I did not mean his family, friends and girlfriends.I love Joaquin and Rain they are so beautiful and sweet.Martha and Samantha are beautiful and I'm sure they were sweet and caring. They were chosen by river so I'm sure they made him happy.I know they tried to help River.Yeah so no I would never blame them I was basically talking about hollywood.I don't think they care about any of the stars.River was not perfect but he was a beautiful and loving person I miss him.
River died at 23. It's been ten years since I was 23 and I think of all I've learned since then and how much I've grown. He died at an age where your really just beginning to know what it is to live. So sad. And to all the leeches who enabled and ignored his drug habit…you suck for all time!
@Ellie5621 I agree wholeheartedly. I'm 27, so I just have 4 years on his death and I still look back at 23 and think about how different I was to even know. He had so much left to live and I'm sure just the way he speaks here that he would have gone onto amazing things. Such a shame he died so tragically. May he Rest In Peace
@Ellie5621 // Don't blame them, he died from "suicide by letting it happen. I loved him. For years I knew it would happen. As their teens end, they have to deal with the straight world more directly, and their anxiety goes way up. He needed a man in his life, for the positive effects. He was a bie-sexual. This is why Declan has no concerts these days. He is the same way. ..When I knew about River, my problems were over-whelming, and I couldn't get to him. I dreaded every day for a decade.
River my poor baby he was toe up from the flo up but he was still always so cool.He was obviously screaming for help.I can't believe no one helped such a beautiful talented caring compassionate kindhearted soul.River I miss you desperately.Your River of love will 4ever flow in my heart.
@twilightriverlove - lot's of people tried to help him, Samantha Mathis, MArtha Plimpton and a few of his closest family members and friends. but he didn't want help until it was too late.
He was a awesome actor and a really kind-hearted person who meant well, but he was flawed like anyone else.
He was such a sweetheart, had such a kind heart and was a gifted actor very wise, in this interview however he is totally out to lunch obviously high for the 2nd half & it makes me sad that he did drugs, i wish he had gotten help for his problem, he helped others with the same problem but couldnt or wouldnt see it in himself
@andrewcramer13 LOL He was good actor end of. He wasn't an important figure just an entertainer. Lots of people in holywood are outspoken and much bigger than him but they're still alive. Bottom line, you have quite an imagination on you. He wasn't all THAT influential
@andrewcramer13 I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but if anyone 'offed' River in order to silence him it'd probably be those running the Children of God - the cult the Phoenix family belonged to in the 70s..
Whether or not River personally suffered sexual abuse at the hands of these 'religious' nuts has never been officially confirmed, but regardless, he didn't have any easy childhood. In most of his later interviews River seems to be on 'something' but I think his drug use was by choice.
"You're moving through rough waters, motor boy, and swimming in your sleep.
How could I be so blind, mis-sighted, not to see there's something wounded deep? Anyone could scratch your surface now, it's all amphetamine. You're blasting yourself into the present to blur some past indignity. You say that you hate it, you want to recreate it" - R.E.M. "So Fast, So Numb"
I´m a law student... I made a conference about Animal Rights last thursday... I talked about Descartes, Locke, Rousseau... And River... That was my personal tribute to him... He was a dedicated PETA activist...
I miss him. His whole ethos was just so right on. He was brilliant. too bad he got so unlucky. His death is one of those irritating things where it could have so easily been avoided if people had moved faster. They'll never be another River Phoenix; he was such a rarity. RIP.
this totally reminds me of joaquin phoenix on david letterman. i honestly don't think that either of them went crazy or something, it seems like they're trying to fuck with everybody.
River didn't like Hollywood i say that clearly because he knew how fake they are. One of the realest actors that wasn't in it for the fame. His death is unfortante because despite the issues he had with Hollywood because he is obviously under pressure here due to fame and paparazzi. I think that is why he wore those shades because of the paps
Hmm, it certainly looks like he was on some sort of drug here. Contrast this interview to one a couple of years prior and you'll see a striking difference.
He was so on drugs right here, but he was intelectual and its his life he can do watever with it. Its not that i aprove of his drug usage its just his life and he lived a good one while he had it, plus hes beautiful, loved him from stand by me<3 R.I.P River.
For me personally River is no hero for doing drugs or being dead at 23. It's just sad and I wish he would still act. I like his sensitivity and his way of acting- and yes I think he was a beautiful young man. We don't know anything detailed about his private life/life situation- expect from TV or press. Maybe he had problems nobody really knew about and he couldn't find another way to express it - who knows.
He was a weak human being for taking drugs...thus killing himself. All these people thinking he was some king of god, when he was only 23 when he died. He did not achieve stella things.
He was always on drugs like most kid actors at that time and thus payed the price. Maybe if he had the same courage to say no to drugs as he did to leather and corporate america, maybe he would be alive today, but then that would not make him River Poenix........
River didn't seem like the kind and gentle young man that he was in this interview. I'm guessing this is when he was starting to get messed up with the drugs. I lost respect for him when he was talking dirty in this interview. It's a damn shame that he got into the stupid world of drugs. But... RIP River. See you in the promise land buddy.
@PieceofMindmusic True, that's kinda what I was guessing. He was the smartest guy in Hollwood in my opinion. Just a real guy who wasn't in the business for the fame. It's just a damn shame that someone like him had to leave us so soon.
he was an absolute natural and understood that he didnt need to study film and understand what makes him great like many other do and do successfully but he was just a natural talent prolly the best natural kid talent that would have brezed and was breesing right into an full fledged adult career. he never stumbled he was going step by step and killing it all the way.. he woudl be what 40 now still in his prime...
he was a stunning person and had an amazing personality and terrific acting talents, i cry everytime i think about him even though i didn't know him personally, he will be missed. love you river r.i.p
he messed up.......acting wise he was a genius intelligence wise he was a genius so you my friend can go fuck yourself b.c he was a brilliant man who got caught up in the rock and roll hollywood clichee
Agreed riverluv93, but by the grace of God I never made his fatal choice. River's death is the most ironic celebrity death of my generation. With all due respect to his integrity, his fatal choice led me to believe that if someone dies stupidly with everything going for them, while others live a long life with only shit, it must mean those with shit will eventually turn the tables and stomp the shit out of spoiled overrated fucking idiots. GFYS if you don't understand what I'm saying.
The Nubians believe a photo snaps a soul too...(Well they did when my mate tried to take a photo of a pretty little Nubian girl in Egypt..He he ! ..She was freightened of Nubians thereafter.. Thanks for this interview...

stonsummergrl18 1 year ago
@stonsummergrl18 Martha, also said his reply was 'its because your not listening well enough' & tbh, if you listen too him, he actually does make sense LOL :P! It probably comes accross as jibberish, because the interview has been edited, you don't hear the 'interviewer' asking the questions, you just hear Rivers reply too them, but if you listen carefully (try and not get lost on how beautiful he is lols), you can make sense of what he is saying :)! i had too watch i a few times over tho haha!

BoricuaDelight 10 months ago
@Ellie5621 // Don't blame them, he died from "suicide by letting it happen. I loved him. For years I knew it would happen. As their teens end, they have to deal with the straight world more directly, and their anxiety goes way up. He needed a man in his life, for the positive effects. He was a bie-sexual. This is why Declan has no concerts these days. He is the same way. ..When I knew about River, my problems were over-whelming, and I couldn't get to him. I dreaded every day for a decade.

Good actor but what a complainer, If the camera scares you so much why continue being an actor.
Totalmachine09 1 year ago
@andrewcramer13 LOL He was good actor end of. He wasn't an important figure just an entertainer. Lots of people in holywood are outspoken and much bigger than him but they're still alive. Bottom line, you have quite an imagination on you. He wasn't all THAT influential

Especially now that he lives in the hearts of millions <3
ohsuckitup2 1 year ago
@andrewcramer13 I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but if anyone 'offed' River in order to silence him it'd probably be those running the Children of God - the cult the Phoenix family belonged to in the 70s..
Whether or not River personally suffered sexual abuse at the hands of these 'religious' nuts has never been officially confirmed, but regardless, he didn't have any easy childhood. In most of his later interviews River seems to be on 'something' but I think his drug use was by choice.

nailloz 1 year ago
River didn't like Hollywood i say that clearly because he knew how fake they are. One of the realest actors that wasn't in it for the fame. His death is unfortante because despite the issues he had with Hollywood because he is obviously under pressure here due to fame and paparazzi. I think that is why he wore those shades because of the paps

009firefox 1 year ago 3

@goldtelner he was trying to be rude or anything, thats just how he wanted to express his disdain of the mainstream. and who can blame him?
PieceofMindmusic 1 year ago
@PieceofMindmusic True, that's kinda what I was guessing. He was the smartest guy in Hollwood in my opinion. Just a real guy who wasn't in the business for the fame. It's just a damn shame that someone like him had to leave us so soon.
