Saw him in a lil club in NY a few yrs ago,, and it was an enjoyable concert ,, but one thing that stiks with me is that after the show,, I had bought one of his CD's and was having him sign it and with all the ppl milling around he actually sat down and talked with me for a few minutes,, gave me the impression of a real gentleman ,, who actually sees his audience as real ppl
just saw him last weekend in a small club in wisconsin, and had the exact same experience; Chris was approachable, friendly, and genuinely interested in those who came to the show. he appeared to be having the time of his life, autographing cds and laughing with fans. a true genteleman and artist!
I remember reading somewhere about the Stones and Dylan,, I don't recall what the article was about but one comment stiks in my mind,,,, " Dylan could eventually write Satisfaction,, but Jagger/ Richards could never write Desolation Row"
This Dylan cover is as good as it gets... The blue guitar is so rich and resonant, and Smither's interpretation is so full of melancholy, that it is all I can do not to weep.
I had never heard Bob Dylan do this First heard Chris do it then listened to Bob Much prefer Chris's cover Had never heard of Chris Smither until I heard him on a local pbs station about 8years ago Have been a fan since
Chris is IMO one of the very few people who can make a cover better than the original. What voice! A mix of gravel, smoke and whiskey. What fingers! Fluid, golden, perfect!
Absolutely agree . Only discovered Chris a few months back but have 5 Albums 2 DVDs and 4 Tickets to see him in on on August 27...3 going spare to fans that are local
I saw Chris do this tune in Winters CA, and man I swear you could hear a pin drop. One of the better pieces of music I've ever seen live. Smither is the BEST.
Chris played a show downtown from my school and he very graciously and willingly sat down with me for an interview for our campus newspaper. Great musician, great guy.
Happy to have lived on the planet at the same time as Dylan, Hiatt, Waits, Smithers and Aretha. Thanks for two of those five in one video! Don't miss Chris if he comes to your town. He gets better and better as the decades pass. One of the last great ones.
Yes, yes, yes! I had dinner with Chris one night before his gig; after the show we sipped tea, smoked hand-rolled cigarettes and played darts until the wee hours. A true gentleman and and a musician for the ages.
The whole story is sadder. Suffice to say that if she got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I'd wake with fear that I'd find her later in a pool of her own blood. I should/could write volumes.
The Blue Guitar never ceases to amaze me. I weep when I hear this song. It was a close friend's dad's favorite song. He died shortly before I met her. We saw this together and I held her hand silently in the dark. I've loved her ever since even though we're not together.
I saw him perform this at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I've seen him every year for the last 7 years. This last year was the first I'd missed, since I moved to SF, CA. Which is also the reason why Liz and I aren't together. Keep up the great posts!
What a player, what a man brilliant, seen him three times in the uk he just blows me away

Chris is real. He's a student of human nature who presents his observations accompanied by a guitar. And we're all the better off for it IMO.

Excellent version; wish he'd done all the verses (although this can be unwieldy since there are 11 of them...).

Did you end up with eachother?
