You're just being difficult. Get over it! They were only doing their job, and you were just being an ass. If you were cooperative in the first place the police would have been nice all along. Maybe you should grow up and act like an adult.
Dude ur problem is ur a smart ass. Cops don't have a personal problem with u. They don't even know you. They're human beings just like you and me, and all they want to do is do their job and get home to their wives and girlfriends safely and you were making it hard for them. And what kind of idiot doesn't carry an ID???
Welcome to good ol' Whiting Indiana son! I grew up there and trust me sounds like nothing has changed only thing is I was worse than you. I am going home soon to see the old neighborhood looking forward to pissing the boys off on last time as I did all through the 80's and 90's. Sorry to say that is how things are done there good luck with your journey.
koontz67 I hope you're on your deathbed and look back and say, "hey all I have done is work and pay taxes, now I am dead" I work but someone who walks across the country is obviously not lazy. You are just ignorant. Every encounter with indiana cops I have had (two) they have been nazi like characters who give you no room until you ackowledge their power, fucking pigs, suck my dick
The Police Observation Cameras are creepy and unsettling in a "1984-ish" way. BUT, at least they arent hidden. The flashing lights alert you to the camera so you KNOW that you are being filmed. You are on a PUBLIC STREET. We have no "rights" to NOT be filmed while in public/on a public street. WHICH IS WHY you have a right to use your own camera and videotape things in public. Works both ways. I like the idea of Police Cameras. They are creepy but its very valid.
IS there a "LAW" against taking still/video pictures while in public? A refinery...OK there IS a valid securtity threat. But the way these cops approach people is what works AGAINST them. This guy is only telling a story. Doesnt mean that any of it is FACT. But I do believe him.
nice how you talk about whiting but have no footage you went from chicago right to Gary walking near that airport you should have gotton robbed seeing thats a bad part of Gary.
growing up with my dad being a trooper in indiana and considering many of his fellow troopers family, having many friends from allen county pd and fort wayne pd, ppl like you make me absolutely sick. i will admit that not all cops are good, there are corrupt cops. but not all are that way and ppl like you fail to see that and assume that because they stop and ask you why you're filming an oil refinery and asking for id it's some cop abusing his power. quit being a little bitch
Well, you're a stupid fucktard. You really thought that you could freely take videos of classified areas that are VERY high on terrorist target lists and formerly one of the top targets on Soviet Nuke lists.
The reason for all the police cameras in Chicago is the large amounts of crime in many parts of South Chicago.
This is in no way becoming a police state. You fail. The cameras were for crime prevention and recording, and the Whiting incident was because it is such a high risk area.
Just picture this from the policeman's point of view: a random person wearing strange clothing without any id or address running around a dangerous area taking video of oil refineries. The police had no idea who you were. The images that you took with your camera MIGHT have been used to help assist in a terrorist attack.
sounds like you were a very uncooperative person...oh yea, in Indiana it's called Failure to Identify if you do not give an officer your name and date of birth. by the way it doesn't matter if it's a government ID or not. Know the laws before you complain about their enforcement.
If you can't read all the signs around BP, it is a MARSEC AREA which equals NO FILMING. You said it yourself possible terrorist threats, there is a chance they could get your footage. Which in turn would give them a layout of the area.
In your defense, there should be signs posted stating that you cannot photograph the refinery. In the officer's defense, you paint a very one-sided story with the tone of voice you use when you quote the officers and when you quote yourself. There's no way to tell what exactly happened without even a poor quality audio recording. As far as withholding your name and date of birth from a police officer goes...
I would not recommend it. That is a violation of I.C. 34-28-5-3.5
Yes, i live in chicago, there are a lot of crossing guards police. Chicago has flashing cameras mainly in the black neighborhoods. I noticed in the white neighborhoods has cameras but are not flashing. (since the flashing indicates a bad area.)
Chicago has flashing cameras in the black neighborhoods because that seems to be where the highest crime rates are. They want the cameras to be seen....
That scares me. When a legal system gets that complicated, it's not a matter of whether or not you broke the law (because you're sure to have done so); but whether your enemy can pay a lawyer enough money to indict you on one.
I almost want to tell the U.S. Govt. to throw out all their laws every year and redo them.
Sounds like fun!! LOL good for blood pressure. I always tell them I know how they are and if they could arrest me I would already be in handcuffs. Funny cuz it's true!
i was in a car with a friend in high school in manchester, NH. we had stopped at a gas station to pick up a coffee or something, and when i went to get back into my friend's car, three cops rushed me, threw me to the ground and put a gun to the back of my head and a knee in my back, they said i was a bank robber and told my friend to drive away- thankfully he didn't. his father was the chief of police in bow, nh.
Will, those cops were responding to the "Patriot Act," which makes any one photographing skyscrapers, chemical plants, refineries, bridges etc. terror suspects... We all know terrorists are red headed 30 somethings, at least 6' tall and wear bright neon vests. After men with guns terrorize me like they did you, I always find I acted differently than I had planned to... adrenaline is sometimes not my friend. My goal is always to calmly expose their tyranny to them.
you people are so fuckin dumb... i understand that sometimes it SEEMS unreasonable, but you gotta realize, not every person born in America likes this place, remember the guy from California who was captured in Afghanistan who was part of Al Queada?? that is why anyone could be a potential terror threat, granted the vast majority of the population would never dream of supporting a terrorist organization. and to say that cops are terrorists is bullshit
Saturday, I was at a car repair garage ranting about the police state. The garage owner told me one of the people I was talking to is HPD. The Houston cop I was talking to acted like he was "one of the good guys." I told him good people break bad laws... like Rosa Parks... he agreed. I said bad cops think they are above the law... but bad cops break laws they enforce... he admits he speeds when he doesn't have to. I told him he is a bad Christian and a bad cop (a hypocrite.) He agreed! LOL
I'm sorry that happened to you Will. It's happened to me as well. I understand and appreciate how you felt. It is unsettling to say the least. The more truth I hear the less I believe in Police. I have zero respect for their imagined authority. They have none, but they do have guns. I also have guns and I will protect my person, my family, and my liberty from those kind of people... if I must. The criminals must be stopped.
The thought of arrest is a scary one. Aside from the risks involved with going to prison there is the negavtive perception of people who are jailed regardless of the reason why. As so many freedom fighters in history have done(jailtime), we to must be mentally prepared for the same thing to happen to us as we fight for liberty (or innocently walk down the street taking pictures).
i'll never be in prison, because prison does not exist in my mind. the fear of incarceration is the same as incarceration itself.
'i'm sitting on a line, someone puts up a fence and says "youre in prison!" then they walk guards back and forth and have all kinds of passes and paperworks and things and they say "we're keepin you locked up!" oh really? ...i didn't have anything to do anyway.' -C.M.

what an annoyingly petty geek. He was lucky those cameras were up on the southside or else the gangbangers would have made him a statistic.
