The Police Observation Cameras are creepy and unsettling in a "1984-ish" way. BUT, at least they arent hidden. The flashing lights alert you to the camera so you KNOW that you are being filmed. You are on a PUBLIC STREET. We have no "rights" to NOT be filmed while in public/on a public street. WHICH IS WHY you have a right to use your own camera and videotape things in public. Works both ways. I like the idea of Police Cameras. They are creepy but its very valid.

The reason for all the police cameras in Chicago is the large amounts of crime in many parts of South Chicago.

This is in no way becoming a police state. You fail. The cameras were for crime prevention and recording, and the Whiting incident was because it is such a high risk area.

Just picture this from the policeman's point of view: a random person wearing strange clothing without any id or address running around a dangerous area taking video of oil refineries. The police had no idea who you were. The images that you took with your camera MIGHT have been used to help assist in a terrorist attack.

If you can't read all the signs around BP, it is a MARSEC AREA which equals NO FILMING. You said it yourself possible terrorist threats, there is a chance they could get your footage. Which in turn would give them a layout of the area.

In your defense, there should be signs posted stating that you cannot photograph the refinery. In the officer's defense, you paint a very one-sided story with the tone of voice you use when you quote the officers and when you quote yourself. There's no way to tell what exactly happened without even a poor quality audio recording. As far as withholding your name and date of birth from a police officer goes...

I would not recommend it. That is a violation of I.C. 34-28-5-3.5

Yes, i live in chicago, there are a lot of crossing guards police. Chicago has flashing cameras mainly in the black neighborhoods. I noticed in the white neighborhoods has cameras but are not flashing. (since the flashing indicates a bad area.)

i was in a car with a friend in high school in manchester, NH. we had stopped at a gas station to pick up a coffee or something, and when i went to get back into my friend's car, three cops rushed me, threw me to the ground and put a gun to the back of my head and a knee in my back, they said i was a bank robber and told my friend to drive away- thankfully he didn't. his father was the chief of police in bow, nh.

it was a memorable police encounter.

Will, those cops were responding to the "Patriot Act," which makes any one photographing skyscrapers, chemical plants, refineries, bridges etc. terror suspects... We all know terrorists are red headed 30 somethings, at least 6' tall and wear bright neon vests. After men with guns terrorize me like they did you, I always find I acted differently than I had planned to... adrenaline is sometimes not my friend.  My goal is always to calmly expose their tyranny to them.

Saturday, I was at a car repair garage ranting about the police state. The garage owner told me one of the people I was talking to is HPD. The Houston cop I was talking to acted like he was "one of the good guys." I told him good people break bad laws... like Rosa Parks... he agreed. I said bad cops think they are above the law... but bad cops break laws they enforce... he admits he speeds when he doesn't have to. I told him he is a bad Christian and a bad cop (a hypocrite.) I have zero respect for their imagined authority. They have none, but they do have guns. The thought of arrest is a scary one. Aside from the risks involved with going to prison there is the negavtive perception of people who are jailed regardless of the reason why. As so many freedom fighters in history have done(jailtime), we to must be mentally prepared for the same thing to happen to us as we fight for liberty (or innocently walk down the street taking pictures).
