  • Read Michael Abrash's Black Book. All the hardcore ASM you could ever want.

  • allaho akbar, lailaha illa allah mohamad rassolo allah , qui ce qu il a celui la est ce qu il n a pas joué dans son enfance ou quoi ????!!!!!!! you did nt play when you ware litl ???

  • I have a XGS Pico 2.0 kit, but unfortunately no SX-KEY or LaMathe book, which would put me back about $120.00. For that amount, I might as well just buy a whole XGS-PIC or XGS-AVR kit.

Which Andre LaMothe book did your course use? "The Black Art" or "Design Your Own"?

  • @WaxAwnWaxOff Where did you get the kts from? If you got them from XGamestation did you talk to LaMothe? He is quite personable from my experience. I would also just recommend trying to get the book and the key as the PIC and AVR are essentially different chips and you'd be starting from scratch if you've never programmed in ASM before.

I used the "Black Art of..." book, but I believe there was some "e-version" of the other one on a CD. I think they were almost the same.

  • @WaxAwnWaxOff Yes, I got it as a gift, and the giver got it from XGamestation. I talked to "support" over email, and (i'm assuming it was) LaMothe was kind enough to send me a replacement CD for the kit. Once I started looking over the material, I realized that I wasn't going to get a lot of use out of the kit without at least paying $60 for a SX-key ... and another $50 for the "Black Art" book.

Having a comp sci degree, I have programmed in some ASM before, but it's been a while.

  • @WaxAwnWaxOff yo you responded to yourself, so I didn't see your comment at first. I don't know what your money situation is, but for the info he gives $110.00 is well worth the price of admission. The book is more of an EE crash course as he doesn't explicitly teach the ASM stuff (he provides documents that do, but the book is aimed at people who can program already so he doesn't have to add another 1000 pages). It has so much useful information in an easy to understand, colloquial tone.

  • @benjaminshinobi Thanks for the input. I went ahead and bought an SX-Key and the "Build Your Own" PDF, which Nurve support (I'm assuming Mr. LaMothe himself) confirmed was identical to the "Black Art" book content-wise. Does the book have a structured learning path, with assignments and experiments? Or did that content only come with the online course you took?

  • @WaxAwnWaxOff The book is very structured, going from analog electronics and Ohm's Law and the like, to Logic chip type stuff all the way to full blown video game like systems and talking about what chips were used in what systems (6502, 6809 etc). The book does not have assignments or lessons proper, they were on the CD, I have 2 that came with the course I took, and I am certain lessons were on one of them. You do not need them, they were often a bit tangential (though interesting).

  • @WaxAwnWaxOff Also check out the PDF I mention at 1:35, you can download it for free and that will help if you need to get your ASM in line (I'm going through it right now obviously). Also it is slightly less active because Andre is working on a new product and the forum keeps getting spammed, but if you post something on the xgamestation forums you are sure to get an almost instantaneous reply.
