@randomrazr The SUV was a by-product of the 80's mini-van craze. Men decided they didn't want to be seen driving the Dodge Caravan or some sort of station wagon, but needed something wagon-like to haul stuff. Ford gave us the Explorer in late 80's and the rest is history. The SUV was around since 1950's with the IH Travelall, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer..but it took Ford to make the SUV the right size and price for us all...
@JWROWE3 The modern SUV (wagon body on a light truck chassis) can actually be traced back (in the US any way..) to the 1935 Chevrolet Suburban. and Yes.. for all you anti-wagon folks An S.U.V. IS A WAGON, It is just on a truck frame rather on a car frame. Before the term S.U.V. was coined, The Suburban, Cherokee ETC were called "wagons" by their makers. Oddly a "UTE" in Austrailia is a PICKUP on a CAR frame! (think Ranchero od ElCamino.)
@WAQWBrentwood Oh, what I wouldn't have done to own the promised Pontiac G8 "ute" that was coming. It was approved to come to the US, but never made it. Have a look at the Top Gear video for the Holden maloo, here on YouTube and prepare to be in love...
@JWROWE3 Yes! I think Killing of Oldsmobile was SAD, But Killing of Pontiac was DUMB. While I can see the argument that Olds was making cars that were too close to Buick, But at the end Pontiac was NOT making re-badged Chevys (execept G5). The G8 Ute would have been unique in the GM line! Sadly, Tis ahs has happend before. The PT Cruiser was intended to be a Plymouth (look at early Plymouth histoey PA,PB etc and the Plymouth style grill. Maybe Chevrolet will revive the concept. Who Knows???
@WAQWBrentwood I read somewhere that several were spotted a while back running around California badged as Chevy's... But, the Holden platform must be getting long in the tooth and will be due for replacement... So, we may never get it after all...
@randomrazr The 1977 Chevrolet Suburban was about the same size as a modern Suburban. While CARS have shrunk over time (and bear in mind the 1977 Caprice was like a foot SHORTER than a 1976 Caprice!) Full Size Trucks,Vans and SUVs have been fairly consistant in size for over 50 years. (although the Cherokee has shrunk since the 1970s) In fact the Full size Dodge van has been using the same body panels from 1971 thru 2003 making it the longest used us body (Beatin the last Checker by 6 years!)
@phmike69 That has to be by mere fractions of an inch. The Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Olds 98, and Buick Electra were all pretty much exactly the same size. The 76 Electra should be exactly the same size as the 75 Electra. It is true that the 71-76 GM full sized cars were as big as cars ever got.
@scdevon People of the older generation were used to driving larger, rear wheel drive cars with V8 engines. Later on fewer large cars like this were made, except for the Caprice and the Ford Crown Victoria. That is why they bought so many of them. They didn't suddenly switch to driving Datsuns. The Caprice was a good value for the money you paid for it.
@njot33 Yes. I know all about these cars. I'm 47 years old and I remember them well. It was such a stereotype to see old white guys driving around in these beasts, though.
@scdevon Not anymore, now you see all loser young uneducated black men driving these cars with all the donked out crap that don't make sense. To prevent themselves from getting into financial trouble, they wound up selling the car with all the crap to justify the high price. Young uneducated black men cant keep this car for ages but elderly white men can.
That's the late Jerry Orbach from Law & Order. A bizarre bit of trivia, he donated his eyes for transplant. Amazing the things you discover on the bloody net!
@SlickvicOTC What was so bad about these cars? The whole point was they downsized the car, you got better gas mileage, but you also got a lot of room. These cars are what kept GM on top through the mid 80s. They were able to continue selling the same body style right through 1991. Millions of these cars were made- so obviously millions of people did not think these cars were "depressing". The commercial is about practicality (gas mileage and value) which was what people were looking at in 1977.
i kno the 197....it was eitrher 1978 or 77 (accord to wiki lol) that gm built the largest commercialy built car and that was the buick electra park avenue

I have wonderful daydreams about far-away planets where cars like this are still sold new and driven by sexy and/or cuddly aliens. Um.......
