That's definitely a polyphemus silk moth! And the antennae look female. It might have been shaking its wings to 'warm them up' for flight. You're lucky to see it during the day, they're really cool up close. Also, totally harmless.
I found two of them on the nearby tennis court after a rainstorm. They were both looking horrible so I picked them up and took them home so they could dry out before releasing them again. One gave birth to hundreds of eggs, but both died before they were even dry enough to fly. The eggs hatched and I fed them. Many died but several survived and were released. Very big moths
Wow, That's huge, When a moth comes flying into my house I'm always the one who has to catch them, or my father, Everyone else thinks they are scary, But they aren't :P I rather enjoy catching them, Bugs don't scare me very much, as long as I know they can't hurt me :) Except wasps, They are only scary when you spray their nest and they all come out in a swarm after you
Moths are so pretty...I get Luna Moths near my home quite often...I like picking them up gently and putting them somewhere dry and out of the view of birds <3
@mrxexellent It is a big one, and I was amazed at how big its body was. It was so big, that when it flew away, we could see it for several hundred feet, and it looked like a bird or bat flying :)
@s4mis4mi Ah come on...spiders are much worse than flying bugs :) When I was in the jungles of Okinawa Japan, we would find these flying bugs that looked just like house flies, only they were 2 to 3 inches long; they were freaky looking, and freaken huge!
Also, the spiders over there would catch birds in their giant spider webs strung between two palm trees...that's pretty freaky too :)
i don't understand why people would go ewww moths are very gental insects people normaly call them night time butterflys they have the same life cycle they just normaly come out at night thats all
@animallover220 Maybe so, but they are more like fat hairly butterflies than real butterflies. I think that is because they fly at night when it is cooler, whereas real butterflies are solar powered and need the heat of the sun to warm up their wings before they can fly.
@animallover220 first of all, theyre very very ugly, second of all, theyre all fuzzy and ive seen those things get squished their guts spil all over the place, and third of all, theyre ugly.
@WORRO01 We found him lurking on our robot, so we had to capture him for his own safety:) When he flew away, we could see him until he landed on that railcar; he was big.
@superlegoman64 I used to know a guy who would eat any bug for 25 cents, and yes he was an adult. We would go find big nasty bugs, and then we would pay him, but we would not stay around to watch him eat them. But we knew that he did, because other people did stay and watch. It was just too gross for us to watch, but it was still funny and worth paying for.
@PlasmaDude47 Wow, I don't think I have ever seen a moth this big before. His body is huge, and when we set him free, you could see him fly away for quite some distance.
@BeanMeister22 The one I saw this morning wasn't quite as big as that one. I'd say half the size perhaps, maybe a young one I dunno. Still that was a cool moth!
Is that you Mothra? xD
