While I like the older version better, I really think the only thing that the 2003 movie did better was ..... I wanna say Rock Island, or as I like to call it the Train Scene. This is a nice distraction but that's about it.
I watched this for the first time the other day, and had this song stuck in my head all day the next day. All in all, not the worst song to have stuck in your head. ;)
Matthew Broderick is fantastic in this! As is Kristin Chenoweth. I am tired of hearing people say that they aren't Robert and Shirley. Maybe not but they did a stand up job and this version is MY favorite!
You can bitch, whine and complain all you want about who is singing what and compare people until you are blue in the face, but it doesn't change the fact that if Disney didn't do this when I was little, loads of people my age would not have the appreciation for stage musicals that we do. Elitism gets you no where except a swift kick to your pretentious behind.
@miker2001 -- Besides the original had Colonel Hall, Mama Partridge, Buddy Hackett, sister Mary Lazarus and Opie in the cast. That can never be duplicated. The remake was a blunder; That's Blunder with a capitol B that rhymes with P that stands for Pool.☺
Matthew is doing a bit of a muted job of this. It's a good way of re-introducing the glory and grandeur of a high school, or any, marching band, at any rate.
@ProCrastiVisionJRD -- It's like when we were kids and our parents sent us to summer camp and we quickly found out that real summer camp is never as kewl as Disney's SPIN AND MARTY.
One of these days I'm going to have to force myself to watch this version all the the way through and give it a fair chance. I can never get past "Ya got Trouble" before I start thinking, "Why on earth would I waste my time watching another version when I could be watching the master himself, Robert Preston???" I do want to see how the other actors compare. Though Broderick does a decent job I just can't buy the con from him. The Music Man falls apart for me if the con isn't believable.
@Iplayforhim16 I know what it is I've seen plenty of them but they never explain that shit. And nothing is wrong with me I love the musical drama, that has just always perplexed me.
@Poopingbotham -- The late great Allen Sherman parodied this as "76 Sol Cohns in the country club and a 110 nice men named Levene. And there's more than a thousand Finks who parade around thel inks, it's a sight that really must be seen."☺
I love this number! I think Matthew Broderick's boyish charm and sweetness makes it more believable why the townspeople fall for Harold Hill. Robert Presto comes around as a much harsher fellow although he most definitely is the better singer. Anyway, I love how the small kids seem to be having the time of their lifes dancing this number...
Why does everyone think Matthew Broderick did bad in this movie? He did amazingly! I am a huge fan of all his movies, and this one is closer to the top than the others.
I think they're both excellent. However, Matthew has one thing going for him. He has a boyish personality and look that I have always envision Hill having. Robert had a more serious and older presence.
"I haven't seen Iowa people so excited since the night when Frank Gotch and Strangler Lewis lay on the mat for three-and-a-half hours without moving a muscle."
The sets, costumes, choreography, music, and dancing is absolutely wonderful! Of course I think no one can match Robert Preston as the prof. but this guy does a creditable job! This is a movie? I had never heard of it! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, it's the 2003 disney release of The Music Man. No, he doesn't quite match Robert's... amazingness. I don't know if you've watched any of it, but a lot of people actually believe Kristin Chenoweth (who plays Marian in this version) actually was better than Shirley Jones. She did a fantastic job!

I really don't see why Disney needed to replace Mathew's part as Inspector Gadget. he did a really good job in that movie.

Broderick is pathetic. Preston was perfect for the role. It is utterly lacking in the energy Preston conjured for the role.

This is a total crap movie compared to the original. Robert Preston was so much Grander

its a bit depressing how many classic movies are being "remade" when they should come with an original idea instead.

i prefer kristen chenoweth as marion, but this whole scene seems overdone. Matthew Broderick just can't carry the scene like Richard Preston.
