remember the other two wires in the Sega's cord? If I had done this neat little mod, I think I would have taken that second LED and mounted it to the clock's case, used the other two wires in the cord to deliver the the charge...then, instead of looking down the barrel of the gun, lol, you could see the 'impact' on the clock!

I have an idea, you can get the phaser, 2 AA batteries, a momentary switch, the G.I.Joe toy's driver and an IR LED, wire the battery to the momentary switch (which would be behind the trigger), from the switch to the LED and the driver. Then put both LED's in the barrel and you're done.

The advantage is that there will be no wire between the phaser and the clock, so there's no risk of the clock falling off.
