  • This song is part of my reportaire (sp?) and I always play it at my gigs along with other Split Enz songs and this one is always the one which gets the attention of those whose full attention I don't already have. It's one of my favourites to play and I'm proud to play it!

  • Oh how I love the song and melody !!!

  • For the musicians out there, the intro bars are a perfect example of use of the Mixolydian mode, a nice vamp to jam to!

  • Unknown masterpiece!

    Cheers from Belgium!

  • There's nothing Australian about this music. Nothing. Split Enz is New Zealand 100%. Only Crowded House had some later association with Australia :) Happy to help

  • not very familiar with either crowded house or split enz but this is a great song! I love the sound of neil finn's voice too. And boy do those lyrics apply to me when I'm in love!

  • hahahaha

  • great song when it fits the masterpeice comes through!!!!

  • Such a beautiful song!!!!!!!! I've been looking for this song for a long time but I didn't know the name of the song and the band, Thanks for uploading it!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a precious memories from back in the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • has to be one of the most beautiful songs, melodically and lyrically, ever. Except Neil's dancing... he's always been terrible :)

  • @MsSez Agreed!

  • what a great great song.simply brilliant.thanks "crowded enz split house".................

  • Michael J Fox has SUCH A GOOD VOICE!

  • @AnthonyJohnCraig hahaha!!! this was prior to his role Marty McFly!!!

  • @AnthonyJohnCraig lol, you are such a prick for saying that... but you made me laugh... which makes you twice a prick!

  • Brilliant song, brilliant video.....and not a single edit cut in the whole clip. That would have been tricky.

  • Parts of this remind me of Supertramp, most predominately the keyboarding.

  • Parts of this remind me of Supertramp, most predominately the keyboarding.

  • What a wonderful, wonderful song. Thank you SO much for posting this. One of my all-time favorites....period.

  • Some of the best ambassadors for NZ that ever were

  • Even though I was born in 88' I think this song is awesome and total classic that beats all the rubbish pop crap of today!

  • As far as writing a beautil song, no-one compares to Neil Finn

  • I am a true Australia but God I love New Zealanders. The more that come over here the better I say.....

  • Watched the finn brothers sing this last night at the Rugby World Cup opening at the waterfront!

  • @heyyouoverthefence I wish TVNZ had shown them

  • Happy memories of seeing them live in London years ago and God they were bloody brilliant!

  • Split Enz, a Hard Act to follow!!!

  • This was a transitional Split Enz song... it could have easily been a Crowded House tune... awesome all around!

  • @GoldenKeyVideos I totally agree with you there :)

  • @GoldenKeyVideos

But glad it was done as Split Enz though. another top hit under the ENZ name

  • God they were good

  • No Bad...I like

  • this song reminds me of school holidays 1984, when I was sent away because my father was dying to a holiday camp on a beach. All i did for a week was sit at the shoreline and fish for cabs. Didnt catch a crab at all, but listened to a lot of music, this reminds me of that week. Beautiful song

  • @chairmanmeow2009 that is a very touching memory

  • Wow. Music really was (WAS) great...

  • Blimey, Neil Finn looks no different now! Not watched this for years. Proud to be a long standing Friend of the Enz

  • Can't describe this in words! just classic! looooooooooooooooooove it !!!

  • totally LOVE this song =D

  • Classic Kiwiana!!!!!!!

  • I like this song.

  • I never get sick of hearing this.

  • what differnce betweens split enz and crowed house ?

  • @MrJeepsters Split Enz more upbeat and happy 80s sound crowded house is softer

  • @ZiggyStardust49 Maybe in early years but not this....No No Split Enz the last song 1984 was even softer but more Mysteriously than Crowded House with all the acoustic guitars, Strange how I find it ;-)) Punk/New Wave was done, close and ended in 1984. Listen for example to the last of The Flock of Seagulls from England 1984 (The more you live the more you love)....Same attitude! Never mind, Musical smells can figure and change LOL***

  • @ludo281160 new wave and punk were still going they just werent as popular. and yer i think a bands earlier style defines them rather than their last outings although split enz and crowded house are both great i always felt split enz had a much more enthusiastic approach to music

  • I think songs like this are why I like Split Enz better than Crowded House. I know that's a tough call, but the earlier stuff was just a bit more magic for me.

  • beautiful.

  • love

  • 8 Dislikes...are you deaf?

  • Nigel Griggs is one HELL of a bass player. That is a wonderful line!

  • You can find Jimmy Barnes' cover on grooveshark . com- I love it. But then again I am a huge Barnsey fan also.

  • Why is the drummer not be showing with such a great song? Why was this the End of SpitEnzz.... Much better should be called Crowded House, that follows howow 6 months later 1985 much money in all their pockets......Alll the crazy stuff from 2011 are telling me.

  • @ludo281160 Read the book about Crowded House called 'Something so strong'. It answers everything for you including how both bands were screwed by Capitol Records. Why wasn't Hess shown clearly on drums? Because he had just joined the band and was not really considered part of the Enz then. R.I.P. Hess

  • @gemusic1 I better clarify that! (Need coffee) Hess wasn't in the clip, Ricky Fataar was and he was a in-between drummer around the time Hess formally joined, so was not a real Enzer. Great drumming by Ricky (as always) though.

  • Rivier4 your boyfriend was an EGG. Mind you though, when I was growing up I couldn't stand Split Enz until they done this song and then I saw the video and I instantly liked it. One of their best songs (that's just my personal opinion). As debowiec3 said "It doesn't get much better than this!" Yes, a True 80's classic.

  • they made timeless music.

  • This song is a timeless master piece!Kids now days should have to take a class in 80's appreciation of music!

  • I LOVE this song!! I still own the 45 :)

  • Great song,thanks for sharing!!

  • Perfect song. That's all I have to say.

  • awesome song....split enz forever!!!!!

  • just 1 BOARD for pop MUSIC lovers ,see the vid of VENICE -one more song ,a happy beautiful song

  • just 1 suggestion that in 200 years ,it will be in a compilation of pop music of the 20 century ,

  • my FAVORITE SONG of split.....z ,one that j Lennon could sing

  • Besides the fantastic and even a bit nostalgic song, I am really liking also this original video : it's giving me a *feel-free* emotion! A classic never to forget and an invitation to visit once AUS/NZ ;-) One of the greatest shares nzoz1984, for which I am so glad of! Thank you! Top Class!

  • I could never remember if this was a Split Enz song or Crowded House. It certainly sounds more like Crowded House. Always great to see the Finn brothers together. Thanks for so much great music.

  • brilliant

  • 16th of april 1984 'the reflex ' was released when was this released??

  • @ferret630

    from the album Conflicting Emotions

B-side "Kia Kaha (Ever Be Strong)"

    Released January 1984

    Recorded 1983

    Genre Pop/Rock

    Length 4:01

    Label Mushroom Records

    Writer(s) Neil Finn

  • One of the best songs Split Enz ever had.

  • If you think this is a cover then you haven't heard the rest of Enz's catalogue

  • Neil Finn's vocal is superb- a fantastic post.

  • what came first duran durans 'reflex ' or this

  • @ferret630 ...google is your friend

  • @noteatpig2getha rubbish it just clicked... google isnt my friend

  • yeah the melody is ripped off from duran durans 'REflex' or is the other way round

  • is there an RPEGIO Stolen from Duran Durans 'REFLEX'

  • @ferret630 sorry the melody is mostly

  • Neil Finn sounds a bit like Geddy Lee.

  • ripe for a cover - who could it justice? A male Adele??? Although I am not a fan Bruno Mars or Justin Bieber? Think about it one of them could introduce the song to a whole new audience.

  • @WesternFrontMusic I don't think anyone would really do this song justice if it was made into a cover.

  • @ExploraOfLife123 purest form covered it mid nineties, another new zealand band

  • @ExploraOfLife123 I have a different opinion. I actually think Jack Vidgens could do it. It is a perfect piece though. Amazing lyrics. smooth arrangement and incredible balance . (IF that sounds dumb what hits you more the purity of the voice , the tone of the piano or the finesse of the strings. The hook or the incredible lyrics. Its a gem So is I Hope I Never.

  • @WesternFrontMusic already been covered by another new zealand band purest form,a while ago,mid nineties.

  • a perfect pop song

  • awesome.

  • I had the privilage to see the Enz in one of their last concerts at festival hall in Melbourne and..... I have "see ya round" too....:-)

  • i keep coming back here for this.. timeless track..

  • This is so freakin good! It still stands up after all this time - even with the 80s production! I LOVE IT!

  • i have this blasting up from my 5.1 audio setup...man it sounds great, and brings back memories, thanks for posting this!!!

  • 1:13 Ouch!

  • It doesn't get much better than this! True 80's classic!!

  • Neil Finn is God.....

  • MULLET

  • He looks like Nathan Fillion.

  • No one else can touch us, while we're in this place.

  • There isn't an echo. It is part of the layering of the track.

  • Who the hell is Justin Bieber..?????????? and what does he have to do with this iconic band.

  • Next u will be claiming pav, lol!

  • 9 people thought they were seeing Justin Bieber..

  • That's how it's always sounded.

  • struck by the similarity in quality of sound and songwriting/lyrics to old Squeeze. amazing music and exceptional talent

  • struck by the similarity in quality of sound and songwriting/lyrics to old Squeeze. amazing stuff.

  • Man I have always loved this song. Funny to see how they made music videos back then compared to know.

  • Why dont we have a Split Enz type music in 2011? All you hear on the radio is the same Beatles shit over and over and over again; flick the station and you get Snoop Dog and American rap crap... "Im da best and I have 45 kilos of gold chains around me neck and a tattoo on my tongue so beat dat mutha f@#ker..."

  • @AntipodeanStar Lay off the Beatles, man. They're the GREATEST EVER. Anything from the 90's to the present day crap is fair game.

  • @AntipodeanStar We do have that style of music (well written). It's just harder to find. Stop listening to 2011 "pop" music because it's crap. You need to find some good indie acts, because there are many bands writing music as good as this in 2011, you just won't find them as easily..

  • G;day nzoz1984, dont quite know why these people are complaining about "echo" problems, the audio is great, NO echo, great quality, as you always give out. Great to see your still here giving out these fantastic Aussie artists, for my listening pleasure!!!

  • I had to listen to this after watching Cold Chisel's "Saturday night" clip - and coming up next some Elton John ...

  • Melody... it's the melody, stupid!

  • doesn't seem to matter what the Finn brothers were apart of, always enjoyable.

  • 7th form wainuiomata college 1984 thanks 4 the memory NZOZ

  • My boyfriend in 1983 didn't like this song. Sure sign I was with the wrong guy.

  • @rivier4 I put it on a mix tape for my long distance love. She liked it and we are still married.

  • @rivier4 You made the right choice...

  • @rivier4 I hope you dumped his ass on the street!

  • @rivier4 now your waking up happy,,right,,

  • @rivier4 are you a guy or a girl?

  • if someone sang this to me, i would marry them!

  • beautiful music their only hit pity

  • The magic is already there !

  • Excellent ! I loooove !

  • @poetview - I do believe that when Tim Finn originally started SE, little brother Neil was still in school. I think he joined the group five years later.

  • mooi he !!
