Mark brings up a really great point in that in order to be taken as a serious competitor in a market where visuals are almost everything developers do need to be perfectionists.
@SiisKolkytEuroo Thanks :) I don't think I'll ever understand why some software makers charge for products while others give it away in the same market. I just don't see how it's possible, but I talked to someone last night who explained a bit about linix and that it's been like this for years. I still say "absolutely free" is misleading to the uninitiated though. Regardless, he also explained long term releases, so I'll take that as a guarantee that there aren't going to be any surprises soon.
@druggedupmodel Then what IS it like? At first I assumed it was just a misleading ad, but now I'm even more confused! Where do these current free applications come from? I listened to the speech and researched their website; Yet I still have no idea what the business model of this company is in relation to small business! Before one switches their shop computers over from Windows (an expensive move), I expect it's reasonable to want to know how Canonical operates. Name calling is uncalled for!
@bobLawblaugh First, I assume you have read and understood why and how Ubuntu itself can be free. (On ubuntu frontpage, click the big "How can it be free?" button.) Now think about the applications. There are literally thousands of applications available all over the web - office programs, mediaplayers, image manipulation programs, games and just about anything. While some of them are proprietary and cost money, others are free and open source software, made by everyone, for everyone's benefit.
@bobLawblaugh Now, what Canonical is doing, they're just setting up an "App Store" for Ubuntu, where application developers can distribute their applications - whether it's free software or proprietary. Canonical itself isn't developing proprietary applications or charging money from them, it's just building a channel for developers to do so. However, this doesn't immediately mean you have to buy something. For almost anything you'd care to do, there's a free application available.
Oh, ok. I think I get it now, kind of like "loss-leaders": Give away the razor, sell the blades? Thanks, I was really confused by that ad. So, as I get it, the system will always be free, you just pay for extra files/apps/whatever if you want to do more? Kind of like a pay as you go cell phone plan, except you get the phone and sim for free?
@bobLawblaugh Not like that at all. had you listened, you would know.
Basically there are developers out there that charge for their programs. However, in order to buy those programs you need to go to their websites. What this is doing is placing those programs into the software center so they're easy to find. the rest of the current applications will always be free
TL;DR? Adding paid apps from web. Still free. Youre a twit
Wait..I'm confused. The very first shot features a struck out dollar sign with a price tag reading "free" attached. Next to it is text with "absolutely free" in bold. Well, uh, what if I want to buy a dvd player ($24.95) from the Ubuntu Software Centre?, or buy 20 gigs in cloud storage ($2.99/month) on Ubuntu One? I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but Canonical is a company and should be careful about misrepresentation in promotional materials just like any other company.
"It's time for us to start getting really precise, really focused, details matter, let's make it perfect."
This is the kind of attitude which makes the difference. Without this kind of approach, it's really hard to get Linux appeal to everyone. It's actually pretty challenging to cater for the smallest details. It's a totally different kind of work as the usual development.
The plan on making Unity default DE and the purple-stylish-theme is really the right approach to make Ubuntu the ultimate "stunning- first- time- user- experience."

Is there a way of contacting the ubuntu team directly with ideas and bugs? Launchpad makes bug reporting sort of a pain.

The opening ad should really be made into a TV ad it seems a lot less cheesy than the stupid Windows 7 ones that have been littering our screens.
