The French lost the war because of multiple reasons, 1: they couldn't recruit civilian men to fight because it wasn't allowed, 2: WWII just ended and they're just rebuilding their army(?), 3: they were fighting in a climate they weren't used to. more to but these are some i think were kinda the main factors. Even the individual soldiers lacked squad automatic weapons(BARs or FM 24/29s) and submachine guns. Otherwise, a compelling battle sequence.

Even though it was a strategic blunder and they were defeated, the French stand at Dien Bien Phu is one of the most hellish and heroic battles of the 20th century. The Legionnaires who fought and died there deserve the utmost respect.

The French unit depicted in this scene was way too under-equipped to be a french groupe mobile of this period. Those were equipped with light tanks(M3-M24), wheeled fighting vehicles(White scout cars and Staghounds) and half-tracks loaded with at least 4 machine guns each. Even the individual soldiers lacked squad automatic weapons(BARs or FM 24/29s) and submachine guns. Otherwise, a compelling battle sequence.

The French military was already on the decline since Napoleon lost Waterloo. Prior to that, they had the best army, the biggest land force in Europe equipped with very modern equipment since the medieval times.
Sadly, big banking interests, financiers of wars, dwindled French military capabilities from the Franco Prussian war, to the horrendous two World Wars. By 1950s, they could not keep up with the nationalistic movements. Moreover, the Viet Minh are amazing fighters.

This was a really short scene about the ambush of GM 100 and GM 43 that lasted days, not minutes or hours, GM stands for "Group Mobile" were highly organized Battle groups of about 3.000 men, with all sorts of batallions in it. There are a lot of things that aren't right on this scene, first of all, the Foreign Legion hadn't a battalion on GM100, i think the movie producers tried to describe "on their views" the massacre of the "Battalon de Koree", a proud elite unit of the french army.

While they dont train for counter terrorism, they will defeat anyone on a battlefield. Their training is more rigorous then the FFL, and they are the only units to have been successful in Afganistan. However, the FFL is an excellent fighting force, and you are correct, you dont disrespect them.

Sure they were some French resistance against the Germans but overall France lost officially. I know Gulf War was an allied effort but the Americans did most of the fighting and the others were not. @FrLawRE No, they are people that have a sence for humor. You obviously dont. I am a german, and i am going for a career in the military, so no american politician here.
I wrote this comment because i liked the jokes, and i think some french-army jokes are true when you think about the history of french warfare.

@andromedarr If you are going to be a soldier I wish you all the best. I do have a sense of humour but I think that all these jokes about French warfare are of bad taste and exaggerated. There is a saying, "God is on the side of the big battalions", and that is true; we dominated Europe when Napoleon ruled France but then lost when lots of countries allied against us. Our two countries France and Germany used to be ennemies but now are allies. So lets stop criticising each other. OK?

@danyd93, son, every Vietmanese battle was WON in Vietnam, and considering the current state of the world, no one says the USA is done with the country yet.... No one has said who might be added to that Axis of Evil, and even the Chinese don't support the country now. Be happy with the imported toys and music, and shut the 'f' up.

The vietnamese won 4 wars with 4 major superpowers within 40years just to unite their country 1st the japanese on their own soil then the french soon followed by the u.s and finally the chinese!
