i am so impressed... i discovered edda moser's recording of this a few years ago and nobody else's version came close in my eyes (ears, rather). i knew of sumi jo but had neglected to look into her after an opera singer friend turned me on to her... i will certainly not forget her now! this is stunning.

She'll be the operatic voice of Veda Pierce in HBO's Mildred Pierce mini-series and this song is featured in it (from what I can see of the trailers)!
This is very nice and technically beautiful but Sumi Jo just doesn't envoke the malice and ferocity of The Queen of the Night. If you like this you should hear the Diana Damrau (impecable vocals and FANTASTIC acting) or the Cristina Deutekom version (not as great an acting job but flawless vocals both in pitch and technique).
@ernest67 what a smart guy you are. what you just said is like saying, "your cat will never be a great dog!!!" Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley would suck at Figaro's aria!! Sherry Milnes FTW!! -.-"
@Elfinesmom I personally think most of the music legends would be astounded at the level of vocal ability in the world today. For one, competition is much much MUCH fiercer, AND I actually think modern world-class singers are much better because pedagogy and scientific knowledge is so much more solid and better understood. I seriously doubt Mozart got the privilege to work with singers close to Sumi's incredibility. :)
@longliveclassicmusic I actually disagree. I don't think modern discoveries have produced better singers. We don't give our predecessors enough credit. Is it really miraculous anything was accomplished before the 20th century? I think BECAUSE they had less interruptions an average competent person could pick a concentration and excel. In some cases singers were raised. Just look at Mozart; Brilliance combined with training made him perfect. I'd be interested to be in the first audience.
@Elfinesmom Yours is definitely the common, wide-spread view of the "old masters." Sadly, we can't be for sure because we don't have recordings. I definitely see your point-of-view. In their own respect, the old Italian singers spent hours a day and years vocalizing to perfect the technique etc before they were ever even given an aria. But the actual technical mastery has to be questioned. Manuel Garcia was the first instructor to pave the way, and scientific understanding was his enlightenment.
I think we can all agree that anyone who can sing this well is pretty damn talented.

Discovering Sumi Jo was the only entertaining thing to come out of that vile HBO version of Mildred Pierce.

@NoirFemme Although I rather enjoyed Mildred Pierce, I also discovered Sumi Jo through that miniseries!

She literally sounds like a flute. Sumi Jo is a one in a million coloratura. No one else need sing this song.

@KMMalmquist hey, friend , there were no very heavy female voice in Baroque, Mozart's time. this kind of voice was Mozart's ideal.
icylakepaxphile 9 months ago
@KMMalmquist I listened to both.. Diana Damrau is off-beat most of the time and doesn't have impeccable technique but Deutekom is excellent!

Who wishes Mozart could come back just for a few minutes to hear Sumi Jo sing his aria how he obviously intended it to be sung?
