Tom Baker is probably the best Doctor, but it is the adorable feisty charm of Elisabeth Sladen, and the subtle affection between Sarah and the Doctor that made the Sarah Jane era probably the best era of Baker's run.
Baker, Pertwee, Troughton, Hartnell WERE The Doctor. The new actors of today come across as actors acting The Doctor.

Quite right i never quite liked a companion as much after Sarah Jane.
Although Rose Tyler is almost as endearing.
