I think I want to go for playing the violin and I've never touched one in my life. I just want to learn how to make such beautiful music and I've got a whole life to do it. These lessons are way better than that grey headed guy who only talks and doesn't teach XD
I was given a violin as a graduation gift. I have no knowledge of it, but want to play. I hold the bow in my left hand and play with my right (I'm left handed when I write.) But he's saying that you play the notes with your left hand. Which direction is proper to hold the violin?!
@YellowMellowJello in general people hold the bow in their right hand. But, in general people are right-handed - if you're up for it, go with what feels natural (aka bow in your left hand), and just mirror fingerings!
Amount of thumb above the neck surely depends on the length of your fingers: longer the fingers, the higher the thumb.
Heifetz played with his thumb well above the finger board (he had long fingers) and he could play a bit, so they say... See the YouTube video "Jascha Heifetz plays Rondo by Mozart" for example.
So it's surely more about understanding the principles and adapting to your physique than rigid "rules of thumb" (sorry about the pun!).

Why did you not use the little finger on the G string while descending?
marius4marius 8 months ago
@marius4marius because he already played the same open note on the D string.
