@djinla2000 The last thing on my mind is that it's personal , you just seemed to be wanting a go at everyone on account of the fact many people do play with dogs and have fun whilst working and still doing a great job. Grooming is a hard job and it is not for everyone!
Even if you are a hard worker and don't mind being wet and dirty all day most people lack the talent it takes to proportion dogs, it is an art that I have seen very few groomers demonstrate most are glorified bathers at best! It is a Fast-Paced Environment, “It's very physical work and can [be] difficult at times,”“ Someone coming into this career must be a self starter, have a lot of initiative patience with difficult animals and clients ...
@djinla2000 I think you're spinning a bit of a yarn here. With 3 groomers working flat out yeah I believe you could do 30 dogs a day at a push. 60 I find laughable, you'd each have to do 20 dogs. Don't be so silly. You sound really hard done by also, as if your job is the bane of your life. It's not illegal to play with your dogs once they're done, I do it all the time and so do a lot of my groomer friends and their shops haven't came crashing down because of it. It's not a death sentence, groo
there is nothing to spin : ) Happy you think so though! We have quite a few short hair breads bull breed dogs ( very popular in LA), chiuaua's ... my shop opens at 7 am and closes at 9 pm and yes we are over worked, and yes I have been known to do 16 dogs on my own in one day! And maybe if you would stop playing with the dogs and get to work you would not think I was telling a story I have no reason to impress you! you play with dogs you are not a groomer!
@djinla2000 I wasn't inferring you were a terrible groomer, I was just making the point that if you're a good groomer with a well run salon then obviously you will make money. However, your original comment made it sound like you were very unhappy with your work, your words being 'get a nice paying desk job', hence why I said youre in the wrong job. Obviously folks like lawyers or doctors are gonna make a ton more money, but that's their business. I'm of the opinion you should do what you love
painting your dog..im sorry i love dogs but thats just wrong i dont say abuse but giving ur dogs rainbow colors had no use and is just for shows...some people are just all about look i think those dogs rather run and play iso being painted and groomed like that...Let the Dogs be Dogs
i am a groomer myself and run my own business. you can make a lot of money working for yourself and NOT working in a salon, if you make house calls!! you don't need to pay any rent on a location that way and customers LOVE that you come to them and their dog feels more relaxed that way.
It looks like it could be a Doggyman slicker. I'm not positive though. Doggyman slickers are nice. They are less sharp on the skin. If you have a drop-coated breed and are trying to grow coat, you should go with a pin brush w/long pins and no nubs on the end of them. Good ones are the blue long-pin pin brush by Plush Puppy and the #1 All Systems pin brush. #1 All Systems brush is gentler. If the hair is bulky or thick, the Plush Puppy may be better at getting through the coat.
You may get another response from me (PC hung up). It looks like a Doggyman slicker brush. For drop coated (long haired) dogs, I'd suggest a good pin brush w/out those damaging nubs on the end of the pins. Doggyman is better than most of the other slickers though IMO. Plush Puppy's blue, long-pinned brush & #1 All Systems pin brushes are really good. Groomers rave about Chris Christensen's brushes. Plush Puppy brush is firmer than #1 All Systems & will get through heavier coats better.
Ok ive been a groomer for alil over 5 years .there is very good money in grooming if skills are utilized properly there is no money in owning your own shop because you are solely responsible for all the overhead ,I personally am thrilled when i get an owner who will allow me to dye thier dog .They have some amazing skills displayed in this video .

well then why bother grooming? if you dont love what you do then you need a new job. i love grooming mainly because it dosent feel like a job cause i get to play with dogs all day.
if your nice and you care and are loving to the animals then there should be no problems. maybe your not the best person to be giving advice.
@peachey2021 And I gave the advice because of people just like you! I own a shop in LA and have had so many people apply thinking they would be playing with dogs it's a business not a playground!
I have 3 groomers and 4 bathers that work for me we do 30 - 60 animals a day and we do a good job how would you have time to play? You would not last an hour at my shop!
@djinla2000 ya know its people like you that bring me lots of clients. your sh*ty look on your job just makes you seem like a bit~ch. many dog owners want a groomer that has a smile and a carefree outlook, not a smart mouth and an ego a mile long. thats why i always make it my first job to play with the dogs. the customers like it and the dogs are happier to come to the groomers if they know good things will happen besides if my grooming skills were lacking then i wouldnt have a job now would i?
@djinla2000 I am a dog groomer, and it pays well if A) you are a good groomer and B) if your salon is run properly. And if you don't enjoy it you are in the wrong job. Just my opinion :) Oh, and this is an advert for a series of dvd's demonstrating techniques, not the actual running of a business.
you are right it does pay well for the kind of job it is, however being a doctor or a lawyer pays much better!
My Store generated $120000 in revenue however the rent for my store is $24000 a year witch is cheap for LA!
Electric is $350 a month shampoo and supplies $500 every two months then there is still phone, Internet, cable credit card cervices $300 - $400 a month.
B) you are a good groomer and B) if your salon is run properly
I am a good groomer as a matter of fact I'm dam good! I just recently moved to Michigan and several of my clients fly me to LA to groom there dogs at my Salon in LA.
I love what I do but again I lived in LA I am %100 sure I make more money then most dog grommer's but by LA standards it's not much! I've never been intimidated by another groomers work or even impressed.
i dont know whare you live but in most states you have to be 18 in order to learn how to groom. but that dosent mean that you cant do your research and learn as much as you can about the different hair cut that way when you are old enough you will be able to learn faster!
and please dont be put off by other pepoles comments grooming can be really fun!!
Perhaps you can find a kennel w/a grooming service that will let you hang around and watch. If there are show handling classes nearby, you could go and watch and let people know that you would love to be an apprentice and learn to groom. If you become a very good groomer and truly love dogs, you will earn good money. If you don't like it & tire of dogs, people will figure that out & you will start losing business. Don't give up on your dreams and you'll be thankful for it when you are older.
I agree that this doesn't hurt the dog. Many owners report that their dogs are happier when dyed because they enjoy all the extra attention they get while out on walks with their owners. For the record, I've never dyed a dog (but would love to). I only groom my own dogs.
Your last comment wasn't very thoughtful. You don't know what is going on in people's lives. Most people are struggling to get by in this economy & are doing their very best by their dogs. They may need the money for food
While I enjoyed the video it didn't help me at all in learing how to groom a dog. As a groomer I am always looking for new ideas and learning how other do things. This didnt help it was entertaining though
@dixyso Not to mention people leave those dresses on their dogs for months on end and the dog gets completely matted which IS bad for the dog. Not like coloring their hair. That is harmless.
OMG since when is dying a dog's fur abuse!? Some of you guys go on about it as if beating a dog would be kinder! No dog is forced to go thru with it. It can only be applied to those dogs that are accepting of the procedure.
And i don't understand how on earth anybody could be embarassed! I would be thrilled to walk a multi-coloured standard poodle around my neighbourhood!
Can you tell i'm a bit of a dog-crazy groomer? lol seriously don't knock this stuff until you (or your dog) try it.
@lozby11 I SECOND THAT,I HAVE BEEN GROOMING DOGS,FOR 25YRS,AND DO SOME CREATIVE STYLING,AND COLOR,FROM TIME TO TIME.HOW SOMEONE CAN COMPARE THAT TO ABUSE,IS BEYOND ME.MOST OF THE DOGS,LOVE IT,BECAUSE IT DRAWS SO MUCH POSITIVE ATTENTION TO THEM,AND IS HARMLESS.GROOMING DOGS,IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT PROFESSIONS,OUT THERE.I GIVE CREDIT TO ANYONE,WHO HAS MADE A LIVING OUT OF IT.IT IS TRUELY AN ART FORM...
Well dogs can see shades. It's not like every color changes into clear black or white.
Dog actually can see mildly colors, but only slightly. But if dogs can't tell colours apart, how can some dogs avoid a certain type on coatcolour? At least the hairdye must change the way dogs smell, and sent is a crusial way of dogs to recognise eachother and transmitting moods. As we all dogowner know, a stressed dog smells totally different than a happy, relaxed one.
the dyeing or process doesnt hurt them, you take your dog to the groomers dont you ? they get cut and bathed there ? the same with the type, its safe and non-toxic, and the dog doesn't even notice it's there.
Yes I agree dogs are naturally beautiful, of course they are :)
But if you want to try something a little different on your next trip to the groomers, why not :) lol as far as i'm concerned the only thing its hurts is well.. maybe you wallet ? o.o (dont know the prices)
I think it's cruel - (to dye or "paint" an animal) - only if the dye and/or process is painful to the animal. I think it's stupid if the dog doesn't really "need" it. (like if the dog is fine the way it is...a beautiful natural color like Black poodle or if the dog is a dalmation...) Most people seem to only do it in the name of "fashion" and because they think it's cute. For most things I don't think it's cute. Some people do some neat designs though...
Do you even know what you're talking about? At all???
All natural dyes are used. The dogs dog care what they look like. You really think dogs sit there and laugh at three-legged Spot over there? No. They don't care!
100% GREAT LOOKING DOGS! Love the colors I just recieved mine last week and experimented on my boxer and one that was by me for dog sitting. You guys turn out wonderful looking poodles! Keep up the good work!
i dont mean to be mean or anything but i think its kinda digustin on how they dye there dogs in such digustin figures and colors! if ur opinion is different then mine then.. greeaaatt
how is that torture? you give a dog a bath, he doesn't mind. why would he mind being different colors? the dog doesn't go outside thinking "oh no i'm rainbow! i hope no one sees me like this!" the stuff washes out with either one bath or with time depending on the dye. as long as pet safe dye is used, what's the big deal? it doesn't hurt the dog.
I'm a pet stylist, but I have been out of the business for years now. I am terrified to get back in the industry. But this video makes me remember how much I enjoyed grooming and makes me think I could just pick up my shears and scissor from dawn til dusk! *smile* Thanks for the post!
I lost my black standard less than 24 hours ago...I just can't function...I loved her so much. She had brain cancer that lead to seizures...she was so young
When cutting around the eye, the movements where a bit rough for my liking. If you were to groom an other person's dog, and catch it's eye, it would be horrid!
great video ..im a dog groomer and i have just dyed my boy blue !! it turned out really well as i have never done it before . you can all check him out on my page !!
i am a groomer and i was wondering if you could tell me where i can buy the vegetable dye that you use as i would like to offer coloring to my clients.
great vidio, love the christmas tree !!1 i work at a grooming salon in australia and we are just starting the hair dyeing and nails. im going to dye my mix dog blue lol to advertise at the park. i dont know what the other dogs will think of him :)
Not color shampoo! Goodness, you have to use a safe, vegetable dye. People don't realize that their dog's skin is different. It's not the same as people's skin, that's why I don't condone testing products on animals. A dripless vegetable dye will work nicely and is safe for their more porous skin.
wow, spellbinding. i think this is GREAT, but how can I buy your grooming dvds in the US? I very much would like to buy them, you obviously know full well what you're doing when it comes to grooming!

That is why we have AKC standards and spend a lot of money to have a dog with papers. Now, you are turning a standard breed into a mutt...i do not see anyone grooming a mutt and dying their coat and putting it on ytube. It is amazing how some people call it dog art and compare it to human tattoos and body piercing. Excuss me, but a dog does not talk; we suppose to the intelligent spieces to look after the animals.

It's fun and it's only hair. Better than any of the items the 9 billion dollar dog-dress industry has churned out.
A doggy dress, puleez. A pink poodle? That's cool!
dixyso 2 years ago

I think it's animalabuse to color a pet!
I've got a poodle myself. I think coloring pets causes misinterpretations in the bodylanguage between dogs.

I think dogs see in black and white
taniaarthur 3 years ago 2
Well dogs can see shades. It's not like every color changes into clear black or white.
Dog actually can see mildly colors, but only slightly. But if dogs can't tell colours apart, how can some dogs avoid a certain type on coatcolour? At least the hairdye must change the way dogs smell, and sent is a crusial way of dogs to recognise eachother and transmitting moods. As we all dogowner know, a stressed dog smells totally different than a happy, relaxed one.

if dye alters scent, wouldn't shampoo alter it also?

the only thing that's cruel it putting hair accesories, and clothes on them :/ that and shaving them down to their skin DX
GIRinDisguise 3 years ago
the dyeing or process doesnt hurt them, you take your dog to the groomers dont you ? they get cut and bathed there ? the same with the type, its safe and non-toxic, and the dog doesn't even notice it's there.
Yes I agree dogs are naturally beautiful, of course they are :)
But if you want to try something a little different on your next trip to the groomers, why not :) lol as far as i'm concerned the only thing its hurts is well.. maybe you wallet ? o.o (dont know the prices)
its safe
GIRinDisguise 3 years ago
I think it's cruel - (to dye or "paint" an animal) - only if the dye and/or process is painful to the animal. I think it's stupid if the dog doesn't really "need" it. (like if the dog is fine the way it is...a beautiful natural color like Black poodle or if the dog is a dalmation...) Most people seem to only do it in the name of "fashion" and because they think it's cute. For most things I don't think it's cute. Some people do some neat designs though...
k24601 3 years ago
Do you even know what you're talking about? At all???
All natural dyes are used. The dogs dog care what they look like. You really think dogs sit there and laugh at three-legged Spot over there? No. They don't care!
MorbidMistake 2 years ago 2
100% GREAT LOOKING DOGS! Love the colors I just recieved mine last week and experimented on my boxer and one that was by me for dog sitting. You guys turn out wonderful looking poodles! Keep up the good work!

i like this vid. i groom my mini schnauzer and i find it quite fun.
NordVind448 3 years ago
how is that torture? you give a dog a bath, he doesn't mind. why would he mind being different colors? the dog doesn't go outside thinking "oh no i'm rainbow! i hope no one sees me like this!" the stuff washes out with either one bath or with time depending on the dye. as long as pet safe dye is used, what's the big deal? it doesn't hurt the dog.
NordVind448 3 years ago 2
I'm a pet stylist, but I have been out of the business for years now. I am terrified to get back in the industry. But this video makes me remember how much I enjoyed grooming and makes me think I could just pick up my shears and scissor from dawn til dusk! *smile* Thanks for the post!

o think they use a color shampoo, thts what i'll do 2 my poodle
cutekatti 5 years ago
Not color shampoo! Goodness, you have to use a safe, vegetable dye. People don't realize that their dog's skin is different. It's not the same as people's skin, that's why I don't condone testing products on animals. A dripless vegetable dye will work nicely and is safe for their more porous skin.
delightracardeanne 4 years ago
WOOOW!! im a groomer too and i want to know your trick to preventing the hair dye from running and what kind of dye do you use?
ilovemypitbull4EVER 5 years ago
Some vegetable dyes don't run. You have to look up a good one that's dripfree and safe for their skin
delightracardeanne 4 years ago
wow, spellbinding. i think this is GREAT, but how can I buy your grooming dvds in the US? I very much would like to buy them, you obviously know full well what you're doing when it comes to grooming!
